Coaching Search Thread a.k.a. the Jeff Blashill Thread
number9 replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
This is all straw man arguments. I haven't said anything about how I believe the team will do next season, I didn't say you should give up and be depressed, I haven't said anything about the playoffs, and I haven't said anything about drafting and developing. When I highlight the fact that what happened was not good, everyone seems to think I hate the Red Wings or something. I don't. I just don't share this puffed up enthusiasm for going with plan B. -

This is my problem. He's new. He's different. He's Jeff Blashill Shiny new toys always get everyone excited. Then you find out you have lead poisoning from the cheap - yet shiny - paint on that new toy. And when you go back to play with your actually good old toy, you can't find it in the toy chest. And that's when you remember, you donated your favorite old toy to the needy kids in Toronto. -

SimonSin is the master of doom n gloom, I still have much to learn of his ways. No, I'm really not. I think it's alarming how happy people are that the best coach in the game jumped ship and is being replaced by an inexperienced question mark. It'd be like if Datsyuk left for Russia tomorrow, and we decided to replace him in the lineup next season with Mantha. Giving Mantha matching playing time, on the top line, etc, etc. Sure Mantha could be really good in that spot next season, but he could also be really bad, or maybe just mediocre. At the end of the day it's probably just be better to hold onto Datsyuk. "But Mantha knows the players!" Gimme a break Let's face it, we got stuck with plan B. Plan A > Plan B -

It's like his "godstrom". Everyone knows who he's talking about, but we don't repeat the blatantly dumb pet name.

I get the joke, but he's kind of right. Babcock was one of the best coaches in the game. To think that Blashill is just as good or better at this point is kind of absurd. Maybe because he coached some of the roster in the minors he'll be better? Maybe. What if we go out in the first round again next year? The likely excuse will be "well it's his first year as coach, give em a break" But if Babs went out again the first round next year, people would be pissed. When in reality it might just be the roster and not the coach. At least we won't have to listen Kips insane anti-babs ranting anymore. -
I kinda agree with H&WR. When I was suspended I had to do a lot of digging as to why, and a lot of it was still pretty inconclusive. It may be plainly apparent to you as mods, but it's not always to us, especially when it's borderline and you're using our posting history to justify it. On the other hand, I realize it would probably be asking too much to have you message every person as to why their post deleted etc.(I don't know how much disciplinary stuff you guys deal with on a daily basis) I don't have a solution, I just think H&WR's point is vaild and not a bowl full of piss wheaties. Just like you guys don't have time to issue everyone an explanation, many don't have the time to read every warning post that's 5 pages back from what's relevant. EDIT: I also think having the rules permanently pinned to the front page of general discussion would help new members immensely, and also leave them no excuse.

Jim Devellano on Mantha's play: "Very disappointing"
number9 replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
From your own quotation of Blashil "When you care as much as he cares, as soon as he learns the daily attention to detail and the daily work ethic it takes, with his skill set, he’s going to be a special player." That's the coach spelling out that he doesn't have the attention to detail or work ethic yet. So there ya go. Scouting profiles after the draft don't exist. All we get is small vague snippets from our coaches and manager. Why is Jimmy D any less of an authority on the matter than Holland or Blashill? Cherry picking? So you are aware of his pre2014 history with poor work ethic then? That he has history of this type of play? You sir are a strawman. Exaggerate my stance much? I don't at all think he is a failure/bust. I think he's still one of our top - biggest and most talented - prospects, who happens to have an issue being consistent in his desire on every play. Good HF quote. It's true. He did have his ups and downs all season! Sometimes he was up making sweet plays, and sometimes he was down standing around looking at the puck. Which I'm sure had something to do with Blashill benching him entire periods on occasion... which I'm sure you've also seen attending games. It was hoped he could go to the Wings straight away. Didn't happen. It was believed he would at least dominate the AHL. Didn't happen. The expectations were higher for him than most prospects. Based on those expectations this was a disappointing season for him. Oh and the troll accusing is cute -

All I'll say is... You know when a player scores a goal and they say "wow, he just never stopped moving his feet that entire shift, and got rewarded for it" He's not that guy -

They have scouting reports on AHL players? Link? Source? I provided one from HF And do you really expect Blashill to blast Mantha's work ethic? Or Holland? The only one being totally honest here (whether that honesty is as classy as the rest of the organization or not) is Devellano. He has been a big disappointment this year, plain and simple. Whether that's because of his work ethic or the vague scapegoat answer "struggles", it's still true. I'm not cherry picking, pretty much every draft day scouting profile highlighted his coasting from time to time. That's not saying he doesn't have many other talents, but that's always been the knock on him. You act like you've never heard this before about him... I thought it was pretty well known. I talk like I've been watching him because I've seen a lot of him in GR. For work I travel to Michigan, specifically GR, all the time. The only one I know who watches more games than me is Krsmith.... -

I'll sell you my Barry Sanders signed football at the right price. But legally, one cannot record NFL football games without the express written consent of the NFL, so I highly doubt you'll ever find any said recordings.

Then you must not being following him very closely http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/anthony-mantha/ "For a player of his size, he skates very well but he needs to keep his feet moving and work hard on both sides of the puck." http://lastwordonsports.com/2013/04/23/anthony-mantha-2013-nhl-draft-player-profile-14/ "Defensively, Mantha’s game is inconsistent. I have seen him be an effective backchecker in his own end of the ice, but I’ve also seen games where he doesn’t get involved enough defensively. He will need to be more consistent in that area of his game and get rid of his bad habit to puck-watch at times." http://www.lighthousehockey.com/2013/6/18/4442938/2013-nhl-draft-profile-anthony-mantha-val-dor "The 6'4 Val-d'Or left wing has admirable skill but is said not to use his size enough nor exhibit enough "drive" for some scouts' liking." "He can skate, he's smart, he reads the play, he has everything. But if there's one negative, he sometimes has a tendency to take the easy way out." - Central Scouting's Chris Bordeleau "He might be the draft's purest scorer, but many guys with inferior stats get more love. "He's not the most eager kid," one scout said. "Some nights you wonder where the intensity is."" - The Hockey News Draft Preview http://isportsweb.com/2014/06/01/detroit-red-wings-prospect-profile-anthony-mantha/ "On the other hand he gets criticized for taking shifts off and being reluctant to help in his own zone." There is literally link after link of descriptions like this from scouts. If you've followed him since the draft then you'd know this has always been the knock on him. I hoped he had put that behind him the next year in juniors when he did all that scoring, but he's been incredibly inconsistent and invisible at times in Grand Rapids. Standing and watching the puck seems to be up there right alongside goal scoring for him. It's frustrating to watch him. -

He's coasting all the way to Franzenville -
I said he's better than 4 of our starters, not all of them. Read.

He put up 4 seasons averaging about 50 pts a season I can pretty much promise u he's better than 4 of our starting D next year. And he'd be a whole lot better than adding David Clarkson or Ryan Clowe.
