Is It Fatigue or Lack of Heart?

This team had more heart than any other Red Wings team I've witnessed since 1998.

No, they won't, but the clock eventually will.

WCF Game 6 (5/22) GDT: Red Wings @ Ducks - 9 PM ET

Not a good start to the game. Caught flat-footed, missing passes, not getting the puck deep and when they do they're not forechecking effectively. Looked better later on in the period, but when the Ducks get chances they're getting GOOD chances. And the first goal was *hardly* a fluke. It hit Niedermayer's skate... wow. Pucks hit skates pretty frequently, and the puck was coming in from a direct shot from the point, not some odd goal-line angle where Zetterberg's goal in Game 1 came from. It was a clean faceoff win by Pahlsson on Datsyuk and it was a good low and heavy shot -- perfect for deflections (regardless of what they hit) and that's exactly what happened. Oh... and the No. 2 PP unit is brutal. Should just go back to rolling your regular lines after the No. 1 unit gets gassed. Good thing it's just 1-0, too, and that the Wings will have to build on some momentum after they get a must-kill penalty off the board to start the 2nd.

    Detroit Newspapers

IMO, the biggest gripe about the local papers here is that there's no "depth" coverage... Most of the stuff in the News and Freep is just recycled company-line material spoon-fed from the Wings' front office, no (or not enough) deep-digging behind the scenes, etc.. In terms of getting that in-depth coverage, I prefer mLive. It's not uncommon for signings and other team-related happenings to get reported here first only to see it pop up in the newspapers the next day or so.

    Kronwall in Anaheim

He will not be returning to the lineup unless the Wings reach the Cup Finals. Remember that Zetterberg was skating regularly with the team for almost a month before returning to the lineup.

2007 Photoshop War: Red Wings vs. Ducks

It did get posted because I made it. (In response to the lame "you're going to get it" line from Game 1.) It was posted sometime before Game 2 of this series. A week ago Saturday. (As an aside, it looks like most of those images in that group were created originally in this thread. Not all, but most.) 10. You can ***** about it, or you can fight through it. Sorry, but the refereeing -- though it sucks sometimes -- has cut both ways in this series. Complaining about it reeks of excuse-seeking. No, it probably does -- just at 0-0.
  11. About the officiating: Didn't the Wings have a power-play in overtime? Or am I hallucinating? (Sarcasm aside -- yes, it was an *easy* call to make. But if the Wings actually *scored* on their opportunities when it mattered I don't think we'd hear all of the complaining about refereeing.)
  12. Here's to hoping. ______ As an aside, I thought this series was going 7 games prior to the start of it, so there's no waivering from that.
  13. Jesus, I sincerely hope the Red Wings aren't dwelling on things like some of you guys are -- and I'm sure they're not. Bottom line: The Ducks took advantage of the breaks they got. The Wings didn't. 2-1 Ducks in OT. That's all there needs to be said. Did the Wings dominate play on the ice for the bulk of the game save for a few shifts? Absolutely. It didn't result in a win -- and that happens. You could say the same thing about Detroit's win in Game 1 of this series. Outplayed for long stretches of that game, we got a pair of "fluke" goals and still came out with the victory. Do you think the Ducks dwelled on those unlucky bounces? Nope. Catalog what happened in this game and file it away: Game 6 is a clean slate. Absolutely. Though it was said after Game 4, too, it's hard not to be confident heading into Anaheim on Tuesday night with the way the team has played the last three games. Granted, they are 1-2 in that stretch but they've had the better on-ice product. You've got to believe that the dam is going to break at some point. If Lidstrom's shot is a quarter-inch further over, if Holmstrom pots that wide-open rebound, etc., etc... It's been a series of centimeters out there.
  14. You're kidding, right? Selanne's goal didn't earn a victory for Anaheim? Where else would I go with it? They earned it on the ice by scoring one more time than Detroit -- how can it be any more clear than that?
  15. What is with this fascination with "deserve"? Who cares about "deserve"? How about actually earning it? The Ducks pounced on the few chances they had and they won the game. It's happened two-straight games now and the Red Wings will have to dig deep Tuesday night. Can it be done? Abso-freakin'-lutely.

WCF Game 5 (5/20): Ducks @ Red Wings, 3pm ET

Because he has an opinion on the how the game has went to this point? Do you know that he thought the Wings would get knocked out early because they weren't "physical enough" to handle the bigger Western Conference teams (Calgary, San Jose, Anaheim)? Just what -- to this point -- would lead you to believe that the Ducks can win this game? Everything up to this point -- and that can change in OT, obviously -- has pointed to the Red Wings getting the next goal. They're playing physical, they've been strong in their own zone, they've been getting scoring opportunities from several lines...

WCF Game 5 (5/20): Ducks @ Red Wings, 3pm ET

I see the opposite happening. The Wings have been the better team all afternoon and the Ducks gassed themselves hard in the 3rd period trying to tie the score. If they get working on the puck the Wings will win this game. The only time Anaheim sniffed the Detroit net most of this game was while on the power play. Stick to it.

    Does home ice really matter?

I think if you polled all 30 NHL teams about where they'd want to play a Game 7 given the choice, they'd pick their own barn. Some may definitely be more comfortable taking on the challenge of a road Game 7 than others, but given the option I think it's obvious what they'd prefer. Here's to hoping that the Red Wings maintain the level of play in Game 5 Sunday that they did for the same game in the previous two series. It'll be critical.

    Post-GAME 4 (5/17): Ducks 5, Red Wings 3

It was a fantastic game, despite the loss. I was a little disappointed that Mike Emerick didn't suffer a coronary by the end of the game, though -- it seemed like he got awfully close a few times in the third period.

    Does home ice really matter?

At the start of the series: no. As the series goes deeper: yes. I think as a series wears on and you become more familiar with your opponent you "settle in", I guess you could say. You know what you want to do, you've got a good idea of what your opponent is going to do and it turns into a battle of wills where any small advantage can tip the scales in your favor. I'll take a home crowd and an intimate knowledge of how live the dasherboards are rather than play in front of a loud, enemy crowd facing elimination.

    Post-GAME 4 (5/17): Ducks 5, Red Wings 3

Honestly, it *was* amazing they didn't get the tying marker... If only Filppula could've finished on his two partial breakaways... Them's the breaks, however.
