Oh, I'm sure Ryan Smyth will be the next "realistically unattainable" asset.
-
Forsberg wouldn't even get an 'A' here.
-
Damn you!
-
Just to note: It was mentioned that the Rangers, Canadiens and Thrashers had scouts at the Wings/Flyers game last night. While the Canadiens have been rumored to be interested in Forsberg, they've been attached to Lang rumors longer. I don't believe that the Rangers nor the Thashers are actively persuing Forsberg either. Looks like those three are your potential suitors if Lang gets dealt.
-
You do realize that in the weeks/months leading up to the trade deadline that Holland repeatedly stated that he was only going to do minor tinkering with depth if he did anything, right? Right? Yes, Cory Cross was "underwhelming", but outside of Witt (who's price was far too high) there wasn't a lot out there last year that would've greatly benefited the Red Wings considering what they were looking for. This year is an entirely different matter.
-
Agreed.

According to Bruce McLeod of the Macomb Daily, it's MacDonald starting tonight. (via RWC)

I have no problem with your opinion BTP, but I think the issue for most people is this: If you can get Peter Forsberg to take Lang's No. 2 center spot and then flip Lang for the assets to land a Todd Bertuzzi, Bill Guerin or Keith Tkachuk -- you do it.
-
Wow. However, I don't believe it. If that was the offer I think Forsberg would be getting sized for his Ducks jersey already. Sounds more like Holmgren leaking juicy morsels to the media in an attempt to drum up a market. Although, now that I think about it, the Wings pulled off a similar deal in 1999 for Chelios. A pair of firsts and what was thought to be a decent defensive prospect in Anders Eriksson. Anaheim would be picking right around where Detroit would've at the time. Of course, that deal was contingent on Chelios signing a contract extension, too. Which makes you wonder about the "rumored" Anaheim offer. Same contingencies?

Nagy isn't what the Red Wings needed. He's been a finesse set-up man (I know, he's on my fantasy team) all year. The Wings have those players -- they need guys to be physical and score. When the Tkachuks, Guerins and Bertuzzis start dropping off the list is when I'd start getting concerned.
-
It does make sense if the Wings have already acquired Forsberg, who would center the 2nd line. Lang would be expendible. Trading him east (Rangers/Habs/Thrashers) for draft picks or prospects would help give the Red Wings more cap space to make a deal and more tradable assets to swing another deal to get a scoring winger for Forsberg. How menacing would this team be if your top line was Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom and if was followed up by Bertuzzi/Tkachuk-Forsberg-Cleary?
-
Because his replacement, Forsberg, is an even better playoff performer and all-around player? Yes, he's more injury-prone, but you'd be hard-pressed to find better playoff performers out there, IMO. I don't feel Lang is dealt unless Forsberg is already a Wing.
-
I don't believe for a second that any kind of clique-ish that permeated the Vancouver room with him and Naslund would manifest itself here. The lockerroom is completely different. In Vancouver Bertuzzi and Naslund were the elite players on a roster that was not a winner and relatively young. The Red Wings' roster is nothing like that. Bertuzzi would know his role here and would probably revel in the fact that he wouldn't be brought in here to carry the load but would be allowed to play his game on a team that is loaded with talent and veteran leadership. I don't think attitude problems that existed in Vancouver would happen in a Detroit lockerroom that consists of Lidstrom, Chelios and other well-respected, Stanley Cup-winning players.

Lilja won't be traded. He's depth insurance. If the Wings are going to trade a warm-body I'd be looking more at Hudler, Williams possibly Samuelsson and a few of the Grand Rapids boys, possibly one of defensemen Ericsson or Kindl or a guy like Evan McGrath.
-
While the Wings love to play puck possession, it hasn't resulted in playoff victories the last several seasons and has been effectively neutralized by keeping them away from the middle of the ice. The team has employed more of a dump-and-chase game when needed to and a guy like Bertuzzi, as long as his back holds up, would help provide even more punch to that style of game. I think the Bertuzzi report was one of two things: Holland's due diligence at exploring all of his options and it leaked or that, as you said, it's a smokescreen (Roberts?).
-
The power play lacks that sniper sitting in the faceoff circle that was vacated when Shanahan signed with the Rangers. Heck, the Wings have missed a big threat off the wing all season, and that weakness has helped bleed out the PP's effectiveness.
-
If a trade for Bertuzzi were to happen I'd be shocked if it didn't include some form of a conditional pick based on his health. Forsberg's been in discomfort all year and susceptible to groin injuries because of that wonky ankle, but at least he's played and shown he's effective even with the limitation. Bertuzzi only has a week or two to make some form of impression.

Tampering? Hello! The Flyers have said no such thing on the record. Philadelphia scribes can speculate at that, and there may have been a wink-wink-nudge-nudge, but no team will say such things publicly.
