He's one of the guys I'm looking to really step it up with Z out for God knows how long. He better bring it.

Well, if Z is out for the first round then you'd think that the other players would really feel the urgency to step up their game and truly leave it all on the floor. Or in this case, ice. And their ability to play hard consistently has definitely been one of the biggest question marks this year.

Some of my friends earlier in the year thought that the Wings were definitely going to lose Eaves when he was on that scoring streak. They thought that Mursak, who is a good prospect in his own right, could take Eaves' spot next year and the 4th line wouldn't miss a beat. Earlier in the year I was somewhat in that camp (mostly because of the log jam the bottom six will have next year) but now not so much. I love Mursak but no way he'll be as good as Eaves next year.

Well, you know, like I somewhat implied in the previous post, it's not as if I wanted to put those guys together. I just got sick of anchoring two guys with Hudler/Holmstrom as I thought about the playoff pace and intensity. And yeah, the comparison is so bad that words can't describe it but when I got to the point where all I had left were those three guys I tried to think of anything that would present it in a better light. "Well... Robitaille was slow too... ."

I need to give Eaves props for something. Usually he gets noticed for his speed and his work ethic on the PK but when you watch him sometimes you just think, "Man, this guy is damn smart, especially in the defensive zone." When you watch him PK sometimes it's as if he knows what the opponent is going to do before they know it themselves. All of a sudden his determination and speed kick in as he rushes to get to a spot before they can. When he gets there, he then blocks a shot, deflects a pass or steals the puck, etc. You just think to yourself, "This guy gets it. He just knows the game."

Hudler and Holmstrom are fn up my line combo ideas because even when they compete at their highest level they still don't skate that well. To me, the biggest problem this past season deals with the whole, "once we got our legs going we started to play better" company line. As you consider playoff pace and intensity, the guys who don't have as much of a problem skating around should get a spot within the top nine. But then that kind of thinking leaves you with a leftover 4th line of Hudler-Modano-Holmstrom and that line just looks God-awful right now based on regular season performance. Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Cleary Franzen-Filppula-Bertuzzi Abdelkader-Helm-Eaves Hudler-Modano-Holmstrom ...Ugh... In that situation, you tell yourself that with limited 5 on 5 minutes maybe they can be a little like the Robitaille-Larionov-Holmstrom line in the '02 playoffs or something.

I am a little surprised Franzen made your list. Not because I can think of somebody better but only because I just don't imagine him in the all-time lineup. Your proposal confirms that I suspected the all-time lineup would look somewhat like the '06 gold medal team. Thanks for replying!

With this thread, I'm hoping to take advantage of the fact that LGW has a lot of fans from all over the world. If you could put together a national team per country but had the freedom to use any player from any time in history as they are in their prime, what would those teams look like and who would get gold, silver and bronze? -Would Lidstrom and Salming make a good defensive combination? -Would Fedorov or Larionov (or someone else) be Russia's #1 center? -Would Crosby make Team Canada's top six? -Which Koivu brother, if any, would fit best with Selanne and Tikkanen as wingers? -Which wingers would flank LaFontaine? -Who goes where on Team Slovakia/Team Czech Republic if you went beyond the 94 Olympics? -Etc. Let's have some fun with this one.
