Nice burn. Props. At the same time, man, at this point, I feel like Ericsson is in Hudler notoriety territory and no Red Wing can come back from that. He did have an average game. And this comment isn't just about the last game. He's always going to get s*** on when you visit Wings forums across the interwebz. Being his devil's advocate can wear on you for sure.

True but the Wings would have to get through their own conference first. Maybe a lot of the other teams in the conference don't have the kind of hype appeal that makes the public fawn over them but they are still very good teams. -Chicago, of course, is a top contender. -Dallas and Minnesota are making big strides on getting better. -Nashville and St. Louis are very solid teams as well. The main point is that a lot of those teams are getting better and it's not as if the Wings only have to worry about Chicago, especially with the increasing trend in parity and the looming shift in eras after Lidstrom retires. I'm not saying that Detroit won't be good. We really don't know at this point. I'm just thinking the whole "alignment has guaranteed another 20 years of playoffs" reaction is premature.

If you could hand select any teams to be in the same 8 or 7-team division as Detroit, which ones would they be?

I guess I'm not really focusing on cases where a fighter challenges a non-fighter. I fully agree that's a s***ty move. And I guess it's just the reality of the situation. Spot picker in a hockey context just inherently has a negative light to it. And if you have a top six forward and fighter who never went after non-fighters and has a fight card of mostly other fighters but refused to fight against other fighters at certain times then he's still technically a spot picker. It just is what it is. EDIT: Not that Backes is that kind of guy. I agree that his fight card is nothing near impressive.

Why is it that they have to have 4 different conferences and not 2 conferences with 2 divisions each?

But doesn't a guy like Backes, a top-six forward, a guy who plays a lot of minutes, kind of have to pick his spots a little? If wins are what's most important, then you don't want waste your team with a s***head like Tootoo and be in the box for 5 minutes when the team needs you out there for 20 minutes a game. I suppose if the team has the win in the bag with say 5-7 minutes left in the 3rd then a guy like Backes can challenge a fighter at that point but it seems like the league is too close and competitive for that scenario.
