nice article by strickland commentating on both sides

article on why it will be hard for the players to rein in fehr even if they wanted to http://www.thestar.c...n-the-nhlpa-cox
-
actually i think the players animosity towards the owners can be traced back even further than that to Alan Eagleson, the most crooked nhlpa head in the history of the union, who was essentially in the owners back pocket.
-
fehr has a history of striking in times of the league's biggest revenue making season, the playoffs and also at the time in which the owners have already paid most of their expenses. coincdentally the players do not get paid in the playoffs and have already recieved their checks before then. this gives the players pretty much all the leverage in negotations let's not forget also, the former pa head bob goodenow led the players on strike back in 1992 on the eve of the stanley cup finals. i'm pretty sure the owners don't want to go down that road again

the writing was on the wall 3 years ago http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?id=4435098
-
yes it is. both suter and parise recieved 10 million dollar signing bonus checks prior to the expiration of the cba. the owners can't touch it.
-
well i've just been reading ove the q&a nhl exec article that i posted earlier responses that i found interesting (and yes i was bored) do you feel there is something to negotiate off of the players 3rd deal, or the one the NHL proposed? How is it legal for the NHL to even suggest rollback on contracts signed under a previous agreement? A contract is a contract for a reason.
-
posted it in the other thread but i suggest checking artlce out http://www.sbnation....tive-reddit-ama another good read by nick kyperos http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl-lockout/2012/10/29/nhl_lockout_gary_bettman_jeremy_jacobs_owners_silence/ hopefully he is right
-
do you have links to these sources claming who is for or against the lockout. i assume the reddit article you are refering to is this one it does not state which teams are for or against it, just that there are 4 owners on the negotiating committee keep in mind that this anonmoyous isn't one of the owners and he wasn't even 100% sure how many owners need to agree for a cba to be ratified. but there was some good stuff in there i hadn't thought about before such as the legal ramfications of contraction and about the teams having to share revenue with other teams that use their building
-
i don't understand why bettman has imposed a gag order on owners while fehr has let the players say anything they want. is it because bettman is worried that some of the owners would come out and criticize bettman and the owners for the lockout showing weakness among the bog?
-
nobody knows for sure if illitch is against/for the lockout. but his passion for his sports teams to win first and foremost is undeniable. it's what seperates himself from most other professional sports teams owners.
-
so who's going to be the next player to make himself look like an idiot in the media?
-
another thing to keep in mind for the union holding out for a better deal. over 200 nhlpa members never played a another game when the league came back after 04-05. so while holding out might be beneficial for the younger guys, this is going to effectively end the careers for some of their fellow older veteran members.
-
he should take his 10 million dollar signing bonus and go buy himself a private island somewhere to live on during this lockout so we don't have to listen to him complain
-
dan boyle is not happy with either side http://www.csnbayare...01&feedID=10290

getting some conflicting reports now Tim Panaccio @tpanotchCSN Again, Bill Daly said MON was NOT a day the league would axe Winter Classic. I think it's mid to late week and they will push it
-
i think they are doing it to get rid of any possible leverage that the players might think they have over the owners with the winter classic.
-
like i've mentioned before, but i think the players union would have a big problem with this. that would be 100+ players that would be out of a job.
-
once they cancel the winter classic, i'm done following this lockout stuff since i have tickets to it and was the only reason why i really hoped that this lockout wouldn't last the entire season. wake me up when these guys get a deal done.

Good article by James mirtle talking about money difference between players and owners proposals. Lot closer than we might think http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/globe-on-hockey/nhl-closer-to-a-deal-than-they-think/article4634609/

if i was a player, i would not want any teams to fold. that is less jobs for them

Sacrifice the full season to guarantee Bettman's removal?
chances14 replied to stevkrause's topic in General
no it doesn't. it might have high ratings for canda television but that's not where the big money tv deal is at. FYI, the lowest rated cup finals since the lockout was when ottawa (a candian team was involved). having canadian teams on tv doesn't automatically get you high tv ratings here in the states (which is where the big money tv contract is) -
that's nonsense. the longer this goes on, the worse it will be for both sides
-
they weren't really counter proposals, more like alternative proposals. i'm willing to bet that fehr and the union already had majority of the proposals content already written before the owners even presented their latest proposal you can also look at it as the players are wasting their career shelf life trying to get a deal that could very well end up being worse than if they just accepted the one already. you can't tell me that the veteran guys like iginla, st.louis, bertuzzi, etc.. just want to get a deal done so they can get back to playing hockey in what will most likely be their final couple seasons in their careers.

the pa has refused to meet on nhl terms and the nhl refuses to meet on the nhlpa terms. the pa are also the ones who refused to come up with a new proposal unless the nhl took salary rollbacks off the table. likewise the owners refused to negotiate until the players accepted rollbacks. both sides are guilty of wanting it their way or the highway.
