How many of you noticed how the linesman looked back at the blue line and then skated right into the Canadian defensemen? That almost led to The US getting the clincher. That was pretty dirty.

Official 2014 Olympic Hockey Thread (Admin warning #316)

This is the 3rd game I've watched with Canada. They are not nearly as good as the US and Russia. I would be shocked if Canada got the gold or silver. Crosby, being the best player in the world, is supposed to make those he plays with, better. That's not happening. -
On the PP, Alfredson should not be playing the point. If the puck goes by him, he doesn't have the wheels to get back. His passing at the point is not very good. Where he is effective is close to the net, just like the goal he scored last night.

I can't believe that the coaching staff refuses to change their power play system. It is outrageously bad. The players are rarely in a position along the boards where they can shoot at the net without getting blocked. I don't know which coach is in charge of this, but he needs to be replaced.

This has been said so many times this year, it's sounding like groundhog day.

Kronwall had an atrocious game. That's putting it mildly. Alfredson should not be on the point. He bobbles that puck and loses contro; more than he can keep it. If the puck goes by him, he's not fast enough to catch the opposing player. If the players aren't emotionally engaged, it starts with the coach. I hate their power play system - mostly ineffective. Just venting over all the incompetence.

gdt 1/1 Winter Classic 2014 GDT: Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 2 (F/SO)

Great, entertaining game. But I have to say the Wings are the biggest shootout chokers, ever. -
I still can't figure out why Howard di not play a tune up game with the Griffins. The decisions being made are puzzling and infuriating, at best.
-
Nice to win, but honestly these players, defensively, don't have a clue what to do.

What concerns me are the groin injuries, especially this late in the season. I think part of it is age, especially with Alfie. Nyquist is young and that is a problem. Is this a conditioning problem? The concussions are of grave concern, no doubt. An enforcer won't stop the initial hit, whereby the damage is already done. The shoulder pads are a factor, in Abby's case. The elbow pads in Dat's case put him down and for him it looked like a grazing shot. Franzen, who knows? I think he just wanted some downtime. The materials used in these pads are rock hard and have no give. By golly, maybe nerf pads for the shoulders and elbows are the answer. Maybe change the whole environment. No glass but netting or screens. Cushioned boards like outfielders have in baseball, maybe just halfway up. That takes care of bounce passes. A whole new game would be created with new strategies. I think I'll send this to Bettman right away!

Right now, the talent level is at an all time low. There is very little chance of the wings doing well this season. This is more than a slump. I feel bad for Alfredson in that in his final year, he has to endure one embarrassment after another. Our coach has not adapted to to what he has. His players need to play in a way that complements their limited skills. The way he has it setup, these players can't do it.

GDT 12/12 GDT: Red Wings 1 at Lightning 2 (SO)

No problem with them shooting but at least go for a corner. These shots were right at him. Bishop didn't even have to move. Tampa's players made Gus work. Our guys were just too lazy, highlighted by Bertuzzi's effort. -

What would be nice is more one timers. Had Miller one timed the shot from Abby, it would have been a goal. Instead, he handles the puck for a second, then shoots. That one second was all Bishop needed to move to his right and stop the shot. -
The players have to start shooting the puck instead of their fancy stick handling which they can't do worth crap. That's on Babcock for not telling his players what to do.

Philly did want Cleary. The other team would not be giving up much especially with the Wings paying most of their salary. Of course that will NEVER happen. Who to give up - Quincey, Cleary, Samuelson, Weiss and Emmerton. Would this get a first round draft pick? Not likely. Maybe a third rounder. Getting rid of those players sure would help the cap space. I'd also bet that these same players would excel with a different coach and system. I keep reading that the Wings system is way different than anyone else's.
-
Time for a trade. There are probably 5 players that could be bundled for some draft picks. Of course Detroit would have to pay part of their salaries to help convince the other team to take them.
-
The wings have had trouble scoring for a couple of seasons, either straight up or on the pp. Some key personnel have left yet Babcock is trying to use the same system as if Stevie Y was still there. The players he has now cannot play this particular system. I remember when Rafalski played in the Olympics and played in a system where he excelled. Then he came back to the Wings and wasn' t the same. What system needs to be applied to get this team on the right track? Which coach would bring this system to Detroit? Right now, it's not Babcock.

I can see Franzen now getting jolted every time he cruises.
-
I think it,s time for Anderson to sit and let Glendening play.why do Colorado and the Preds let their 19 year old kids play and ours right now are wasting away in the minors. Bring Mantha up since he knows how to score. Don't worry about his defensive play. As it is, he would fit right in.
-
Abdelkader must be in control. He deserves a $ 25000 fine for being stupid and causing the tying goal. No excuse as far as I'm concerned.
-
I was glad to see his honest evaluation about his coaching. I think all of us fans were thinking the same thing. Has Babcock become too complacent, just like his players? It appears that there is no discipline. A big thing, for me are the linecombinations. I realize he's in a pickle because virtually everybody is underperforming. Some players just need to be sat down. Has Zetterburg called a team meeting? Regardless, something is seriously wrong with the team. The source needs to be sorted out and fixed - pronto.
-
My question is what is Babcock's system? This year I haven't seen any semblance of an organized attack, especially on the PP. Babcock has been here for a lot of years and the players still have no clue what to do .
-
I agree but the ass, I mean mule, doesn't even shoot. He's not even doing what he's told to do. He's supposed to go to the front of the net. How many times have you seen him park himself there?
-
What I don't understand is why Babcock doesn't play his fourth line? Seriously, Franzen needs to be down there.
