Not only do we get the BEST fit for #4 D-man, but we save draft picks we would have spent at the deadline next year. Now we don't need to worry about D at next year's deadline. SWEET!

Lidstrom Rafalski Stuart Kronwall Lebda Lilja Meech Chelios Quincy Ericsson WOW!!! I say again.....WOW!

Keep in mind that the signing wasn't bad because Bertuzzi is past his prime and is now a 2nd-3rd line power forward, it was bad because they paid 4 million for such a player. If Bertuzzi came to the Red Wings for LESS than 1 mil to replace Drake, I have no problem with it. 1 mil for a power forward on the 3rd line who might chip in 35-40pts is fine. If he asks for 2.5 mil, I'd say "Hell no!"

Are you actually trying to compare Osgood's role with Downey's role? I might as well say Babcock is absolutely uselss at anything other than coaching, therefore, he fits his role as well as Downey. C'mon, Downey can fight and do nothing else. This is NOT the same as Osgood being able to goaltend and nothing else.

Lecavalier to sign new 9-year, $77-million deal
redwinger4747 replied to Systemfel's topic in General
This deal wont affect Zetterberg's contract. Holland has his own policy. I'm sure he will say "other teams overpay for players, we win championships" and wont throw 8.5mil at Zetterberg. Datsyuk's contract will go a long way to keeping Z's salary around 7-7.5mil. I absolutely love Z, but the difference between him and Dats is small. I'd prefer to see Z around 7mil and I think Holland will make it happen. -
I am not opposed to this since he at least has some offensive upside and would fill Drake's role relatively well. Having said that, we in no way need him and shouldn't offer him much money, if we even decided to call his agent at all.
-
Well of course because we would all love to see him fight and piss the other team off. But he was barely out there 5 min a game and never did anything productive. And I mean never. Seriously, 0 goals, 3 assists in 56 games? I'd rather give that ice time to Leino or Kopecky or Abdelkader or Ritola, someone.....ANYONE. Someone else that can develop and become a better player. Downey will never be anything more than what he is, which is a fighter and nothing else.
-
Why do so many Wings fans on this board love Aaron Downey? Sure, he's a great guy and sticks up for his teamates well, but c'mon, other than fighting, he's USELESS on the ice. I mean did you guys watch the regular season? Where is all this Downey love coming from? He can fight but he can't play hockey, it makes no sense to keep him.

It wasn't my point whether they left on their own or were traded. I'm just talking about players who were on the Wings, then went to another team, and then stunk (or the exceptions who didn't). How they left the Wings is irrelevant for this conversation.
-
My brother and I talk about this as the curse of the Red Wings. More players that have stunk after they have left include Lapionte, Lang (who amazingly has been even worse since leaving), Robitaille (who was close to retirement), and Dandenault. The only players I look at as doing legitimately well after leaving the Wings are Slava Kozlov, Sean Avery, and Keith Primeau.
-
Why are you suddenly talking lke Ozzie is halfway to his grave? DUDE, he just won the CUP! He is not a backup. Ozzie is the starter until he plays himself out of that role, period.
-
Signing Hossa WOULD wreak havoc on our team, as soon as the 2009-10 season starts. I expect Holland to make absolutely no effort to sign Hossa whatsoever because he is smart enough to know that we don't need a superstar, a franchise centerpiece - we already have those in place. We only need to fill out the bottom of our roster and we're set to contend for the near future.
-
Umm.....how about WE JUST WON THE STANLEY CUP and we don't need to get into a bidding war over the most sought after free agent when OUR WHOLE ROSTER is coming back next year. We just need to keep our guys, resign Flip, hopefully sign Stuart, bring in a 3rd or 4th line guy to replace Drake (which may or may not be Leino) and we have Holmstrom Zetterberg Datsyuk Sammy Filppula Franzen Maltby Draper Cleary Hudler Helm Kopecky/Leino McCarty Lidstrom Rafalski Kronwall Stuart Ericsson Lebda Chelios Meech/Quincey Osgood Howard So obviously this roster can NOT win the Stanley Cup, we've found that out, so lets revamp our team, pay 8mil for Hossa. Yeah, good strategy.
-
Ron Hainsey as a #4? Doesn't seem like a bad idea if we lose Stewie.
-
HAHAHA!! The Rangers backup over Nabby, Luongo, Kipper, and maybe....hmmmm....Lundqvist, the starter?! Wow, no further comment necessary. Besides Z and Pav, he didn't even put Malkin there, instead going with DAVID CLARKSON with a whopping 22pts on the season. Hmm.......
-
Me too! Especially since I get the feeling that Hakan Andersson had this guy in his back pocket all draft and knew we didn't need to take him until the end. Here's to the next late steal, see you in six years!
-
According to TSN, the Preds have signed Ellis for 2 yrs and 3.5mil, which is 1.75mil/year. Now we see why they traded Mason. This is a steal, Ellis has a lot of potential and probably could have gotten 3mil on the open market. TSN EDIT: NOW i see where this was moved to, under the Mason trade thread. I couldn't find it, so I posted it again. Feel free to delete this, since I found where it was merged.
-
Just ask yourself this, what is easier to find, a late-round steal goalie, or a late-round steal forward? We probably are confident we can find good forwards in the later rounds but knew that the goaltender depth we needed was only to be had in the 1st round. In Kenny I trust.
-
Hakan Andersson's steals are all coming tomorrow. Don't worry, Holland knows what he is doing, we just won the cup!
-
TSN Preds sign Ellis for 2 years at 1.75mil per year. Trading Mason now makes sense. This is a steal if you ask me.
-
I could not agree more. The 2-3-2 format sucks because AT ALL TIMES in a series, the team with home-ice advantage should have played more games at home or an equal amount. In the 2-3-2 format, after game 5, the team without home-ice advantage has played more home games. This is not right.
-
He's too young, has too much potential, and we're too good at drafting late to let him walk now for early draft picks.
-
I absolutely agree they are missing something, but Yashin is not the answer. They are already taking a cap hit on him, then to take another? That would be ridiculous. They should go after Hossa like every other team that is wanting. Besides that, they should go for young players like Vrbata, Huselius or even Malone.

Like when Chelios said he'd never play for Detroit?
