Official 2016 Detroit Red Wings Offseason Thread

Why would Sheahan on the 4th line be a waste? I would love to see more balance on the roster with scoring coming from other players. The quality of competition that the 4th line faces would give these players a chance to really shine. How about: Zetterberg - Larkin - Nyquist Tatar - Nielsen - Abdelkader Vanek - Helm - Athanasiou Jurco - Sheahan - Mantha That 4th line could wreck other teams "grind" lines with the correct usage. Also, imagine the speed with Helm and AA on the 3rd line. Miller, Ott, and even Glendening should be riding the bench as much as possible. Gone are the days of a 4th line made up of goons/thugs/unskilled players with 5 minutes of ice time per game. The NHL has changed and I am hoping that Holland and Blashill are willing to change with it.
  3. I would like to add that Quine's 1g/4a (5pts) in the playoffs for the Islanders this past season.... Would have led the Wings team.

    Revisiting the 2011 Entry Draft

I recall being excited with some of the picks the Wings made in 2011. Alas, five years later my heart is heavy with disappointment that Jurco, Sproul, and Ouellet haven't been able to contribute in the NHL. And Quine not being signed and subsequently re-drafted by the Isles while the Wings signed Richard Nedomlel is just a head scratcher.
  5. I wouldn't even give them Nyquist for Fowler. He is NOT a top pairing d-man, and the Wings need a legitimate top-2 guy, not another bottom 3 or 4 d-man. We have enough of them. I would, however, give them Nyquist, Smith, and a prospect for Lindholm. But that is probably a pipe dream as I doubt Lindholm gets moved. Hence, the reason Fowler's name has been on the market for several months.

Thomas Vanek signs 1 year, $2.6m deal with Detroit

Vanek is a good low risk, high reward signing. Still hate the Miller/Helm signings and not liking the term for Nielsen but the Vanek deal is good.

Thomas Vanek signs 1 year, $2.6m deal with Detroit

sports talk radio....haha Pretty much agree with you except for the Stamkos comment. He was never ours to lose. so so glad we didn't sign Martin
  8. This signing isn't terrible but it isn't good either. You are correct that Holland doesn't have his pick of everyone available, but he could maybe NOT sign more of the same players for too much money with NTC/NMC and actually try to fill positions of need. What a concept!
  9. Not the worst signing ever by any stretch of the imagination. I am ok with the AAV but the term is concerning to be sure. Doesn't really fill a need that someone else can't fill (AA?). Oh well, more mediocrity and 1st round playoff exits coming. HOORAAH!

    Alexey Marchenko re-signed: 2 years, $1.45m AAV

Good deal for the Wings and for Marchenko. One of my favorite young players on the Wings.

    Darren Helm re-signed: 5 years, $3.85m AAV

Bertuzzi is fairly close and Nosek probably should be on the roster next year. Never mind that AA, Jurco, and Pulkkinen received very little regular ice time.

    Darren Helm re-signed: 5 years, $3.85m AAV

This front office is just unbelievable. We need change so let's re-sign Miller and Helm.

Biggest need for Red Wings in Off-season Poll

Completely agree with all of this. We need solid guys who can play effectively at both ends of the ice and move the puck out of the d-zone without being a liability elsewhere. Even Kris Draper, primarily known as a defensive forward, could move the puck up ice and chip in on offense at times. I would like to see the Wings make a deal for Trouba but if that doesn't happen, perhaps Shattenkirk would be an option as well.

Gordie Howe has passed away. 1928-2016.

    Mr. Hockey Rink?

Gordie Howe has passed away. 1928-2016.

The Wings have been blessed with so many great players over the years. Yzerman, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg. But there will never be another Gordie Howe. He was the greatest player to ever lace up the skates and the classiest player to ever take them off. RIP #9...you will be missed.

Biggest need for Red Wings in Off-season Poll

Stay at Home d-men are going the way of the dinosaur. They just aren't as useful as they were in the past considering how puck possession and quickly getting the puck up the ice is so much more important now that it was in the past. There were a few teams from the 80's-00's that played like that (Edmonton and the Wings come to mind) but really the play style we see now with teams like the Kings, Blackhawks, and Penguins is fairly new. I can't think of a single stay at home d-man on any of those rosters (doesn't mean there aren't any, just means I can't think of any).

Wings hire John Torchetti as 2nd Assistant

He is a strict disciplinarian type of coach who demands accountability. I suspect he will keep the players motivated and engaged on the ice while Ferschweiler will still draw up the PP from upstairs.

Huh? Nosek is 6'2" and Callahan is 6'. I guess the definition of midget has changed.

Official 2016 Detroit Red Wings Offseason Thread

I would love to see Stamkos in Detroit next year as would most other Wings fans. I am not sure how realistic it is to think he will sign in Detroit though. Holland would have to convince him that we are close to being a contender and be able to pay him enough as well. I will pass on Radulov if he really wants the reported $7-$7.5 million per year. That is a ridiculous amount of money for a guy of his caliber who never really proved he can stick in the NHL.

    16/17 offseason

Very unlikely Richards comes back. There was an article about him a week or so ago where he said Detroit was probably not a good fit for him. I find it hard to believe he would come back to a team that is probably not any better than they were last year. But, who knows with Ken Holland anymore.

    50 contracted players

Paetsch is under contract to the Griffins, not the Wings and does not count towards the 50 man limit. Aubry, Campbell, Miele, and Lashoff are all career minor leaguers.
