    2017 Draft

Hi Ken Holland, how about less posting in these forums and more drafting actual good players, k thanks.

Oh to be a fly on the wall during those contract negotiations.

What an ignorant comment. Suzuki has tons of skill and will skate circles around Rasmussen.

    2017 Draft

Juniors for 2 more years, then GR for 5 years, then waivers after that and he plays for another team briefly before hitting waivers again where KH picks him up again because of his size and compete level.

Nope, but my faith in this organization and specifically KH died when Lids retired.

    Be honest..

What this team really needs is a culture change. Everything with the Wings has become about the process, doing things the right way, a 200 foot game, and of course the playoff streak. I don't see a hunger from this team to want to win or even compete sometimes. It appears that Blashill has lost the team, and with the absurd moves made by Holland since Lids retired...we need a change from the top down.

    Pulkkinen claimed by Minnesota Wild

You are correct that one game doesn't prove much. But if you look at the career numbers for these three players you will see this is who they are: Glendening career CF% is 44.2 Miller career CF% is 49.0 Ott career CF% is 47.2 Yep, great shutdown line. I miss me some Draper/Maltby/McCarty/Kocur.

    Pulkkinen claimed by Minnesota Wild

Actually that line IS terrible. They had a COMBINED Corsi For % in tonight's game of 30.11%. That is combined! Glendening led the way with a whopping 6.9% CF. They were a combined (-74) in Corsi differential as well. Ugh. Advanced stats aren't everything but they do tell a good part of the story and we are being hit in the face with how awful this line is. Glendening should be getting less than 10 minutes per night and Miller/Ott shouldn't even be on the team. Meanwhile, even though he was a -1 and scored no points, Pulkkinen was a 69.23% CF. Positive possession seems to be a trend with him.

    Pulkkinen claimed by Minnesota Wild

I know now that I am wasting my time when the argument descends into so and so sucks. But here goes anyway: Tomas Jurco Corsi is 56.7%, 55.2%, and 51.3% since 2013. He has 143 games played, 15 goals, 24 assists, and 39 points. He averages 0.27 points per game. Teemu Pulkkinen Corsi is 60.0%, 57.9%, 57.8% since 2013. He has 70 games played, 11 goals, 9 assists, and 20 points. He averages 0.29 points per game. Conversely... Luke Glendening Corsi is 45.7%, 43.5%, and 43.9% since 2013. He has 219 games played, 21 goals, 25 assists, and 46 points. He averages 0.21 points per game. Drew Miller and Steve Ott are...well...Drew Miller and Steve Ott and their numbers are even worse than Glendening. Jurco and Pulkkinen were put in the wrong role for what they do and bring to the team. The OMG line lit it up in the preseason against mostly AHL players, goodie for them. It won't happen in the regular season against fast, skilled players and that line will continue to be the black hole it was last year. We can agree to disagree and leave it at that.

    Pulkkinen claimed by Minnesota Wild

plus/minus is far more flawed than corsi and is not really a relevant indicator of player ability anymore. Both the Kings and Pens (and Blackhawks/Bruins for that matter) won cups with 4 balanced lines. Bergeron in Boston, Kopitar in LA are two examples of 1st line players used in shutdown roles. Luke Glendening, Drew Miller, and Steve Ott are examples of how the NHL looked 20 years ago with a grinding 4th line. It just isn't needed anymore. I would much rather match up Sheahan/Pulkkinen/Jurco or something similar against a line of Glendening/Miller/Ott. Guess which line wins that battle?

    Pulkkinen claimed by Minnesota Wild

15 goals would still be more than Ott/Glendening/Miller combined. In 2013-14 Glendening's Corsi was a whopping 45.7%. In 2014-15 his Corsi was a stellar 43.5%. Last year it was a fabulous 43.9%. Yeah, very strong numbers for a 4th liner. This archaic idea that you still need a grinding 4th line to "shut down" the opposition (something this 4th line is not capable of doing in any case) is the reason the Wings are behind the curve in the NHL. If you watched any of the Pens games in the playoffs last year you would understand how and why the Wings are behind.

No way is Fowler worth Nyquist or Tatar, and never mind adding another player and a pick. All of the advanced stats show both of these guys as possession monsters on a s***ty possession team and trading either would be a mistake. The mistake people are making is believing either of them (or both) can carry the Wings to a Stanley Cup. The Wings need an elite goal scorer and a #1 center and at least one top-pairing defenseman, preferably two of them. These are not easy fixes, and trading away one or both of the few players on the team who have offensive ability and are still fairly young would be foolish. Especially for a very over-rated Cam Fowler. He is nothing more than another version of Danny DeKeyser and the advanced stats have shown this to be true. Instead of trading away the few good young players you have (i.e., Nyquist, Tatar, AA, Larkin, Mantha), why not actually let some of the young guys play regularly and see what they can do. If they fail, trade/release them. If they turn into decent contributors, great we didn't lose them in another stupid Adam Oates/Paul MacLean for Tony McKegney/Bernie Federko deal.

...and eliminated in the first round several years in a row. Apparently that is good enough for Holland since he is determined to lock up all the same players that we have failed with....to long term deals.
  17. Pretty much agree with this thought. Really, there is an argument to be made that all of them could/should be retired. However, Fedorov was an absolute DOMINANT player in a dead puck era and Ozzie, while benefiting from a good team around him, did make the saves needed when it mattered most. I think if the Wings had won another Cup or two while Dats and Z played (f*** you Pens) they would have a stronger argument. Neither really holds any significant records/awards though (outside of Z's Conn Smythe). I wouldn't have a problem with all of them being retired, but #91 and probably #30 should be.

I may have been a little on the low side, but it was very close; probably more around 24-25. So, no...not completely false. http://www.cbc.ca/news/when-nhl-players-peak-hockey-metrics-1.2646054 http://www.tsn.ca/pinning-down-a-player-s-prime-performance-years-1.388514

This team will need to be extremely lucky to make the playoffs. I have my doubts that they will unless something drastically changes. We have seen so far that Holland and co. are content with the same old same old - just make the playoffs, anything can happen!
  22. Unfortunately more than one will have to be waived to get back down to GR if the Wings are over the 23 man roster limit when the season starts. I would really hate to see Sproul, Ouellet, and Frk all get claimed on waivers while Glendening/Miller/Ott/Helm/Ericsson get 15 minutes per night. Ugh.

Glendening signs 4-year, $1.8m AAV extension

Hate to break it to you, but we have already seen his best years. Hockey players tend to hit their peak between ages 23-25. Glendy is already past that age and he is not going to get better; he will only get worse. This contract will become another albatross around the organization's neck as they try to "rebuild on the fly".

Blocked shots is one of the worst metrics in hockey. If you are blocking a lot of shots then you don't have the puck, if you don't have the puck you aren't scoring, and if you aren't scoring you aren't winning. This is a terrible contract in a growing list of them. I actually pictured Kenny saying this as I read it. Very well done.
