  1. I'm saying he is not as good as people think he is. That video game is a perfect example of my issue with him being ranked #2 in the NHL. There are many forwards/D-men/Goalies much more valuable then him.

Just off the top of my head, guys I would rather have then Toews (assuming healthy), Crosby, Ovie, Kane (if he wasn't a ******), Keith, Weber, Price, Lundqvist, Quick, Kopitar, Malkin.

I never said he wasn't a great player, just not the best of the best. Bergeron is a great example, everyone respects him as a player, but you dont hear people saying he is the face of the NHL, the best player in the league etc. You do hear that about Toews, and IMO they are at the same level.

I question how people can say he is the best in the league, when he is probably the third best player on his own team.

Lets just discuss forwards. Point noted and agreed to on all players.

Crosby is the best player in the game today. We could all agree to that, right? I think we could all also agree to Ovi being #2. Those 2 are premier players. I think where you and I disagree is what happens next. I think Toews slots in at the top of the next tier which includes Datsyuk, Bergeron, Benn, Malkin, Kane, and Kopitar. I think you see him slotting in at the top of tier 3 with the Zetterbergs and Pavelskis of the NHL. This just isn't true, though. He gets paid top dollar and rated highly because he's the next best thing to Sid the Kid.

  2. Who plans on keeping Jimmy for the backup? Short term with Petr & Jimmy is the best case for us, with hopes of Jimmy playing the way he did the other night so his stock goes up and we can trade him for more then a bag of pucks.

The free agent goalie pool is pretty deep this year

Ken Holland said he wasnt trading Howard. So Ken Holland is my answer.

  3. The Edmonton Oiler Rule:

When any team drafts within the first 3 picks, they will automatically be placed 28, 29, 30 the following year, 25, 26, 27 the year after that, and finally 22, 23, 24 the year after that. After 3 years of ineligibility for lottery consideration, they can regain lottery consideration status.

Edmonton is an embarassment right now and should not be in the condition they are in after drafting 4 number 1s in the last 6 years. The league needs to put a stop to it and make it impossible for the league's top talent to circle the drain in an environment that isn't recovering. At what point does the NHL step in and say "You're done, Edmonton. Get better, or get out."?

  4. I shouldn't have used "owe" since I didn't follow what happened to the bet. I remember it was at the beginning of the season, and I do 'cause I wanted to make my wager in that bet and thought it was really cool to see that happen (the bet). I'll try to look it up and pm you.

    Sounds good. Lemme know.

  5. Last year it was Pulk who was a legit scorer and would be a 30 goal guy. This year it's Frk. Both aren't quick enough to get open against NHL defenses.

You are wrong about Frk. He's fast. Not Larkin fast, but definitely Glendening fast. And he's getting bigger and stronger. He's 200 lbs now. Will be 205 next year, which is where we need our other Euro softy trio to be.

  6. Lol @ frk

Save this for halfway thru next season. You're going to see him in preseason next year and be surprised. Then after he has 15 goals thru 22 games in GR next year and gets called up, you're going to eat your crow hard. The guy has turned it around big time. Watch the Grifs games and you will see.

  7. How does that even work?

Cap woes are of no consideration?

    Roster limits?

Sure. It's a horrible time for Tatar and Nyquist to be slumping and Richards hasn't been stellar, but I'm unsure as to why you'd bring up two guys who have no NHL experience and give them top line minutes. Meanwhile at least one of Richards, Tatar, and Pulkinnen just magically disappear from the roster?

    Zetterberg- Datsyuk - Abdelkader

    Tatar-Larkin-Nyquist

    Jurco-AA-Pulkinnen

    Helm - Sheahan - Glendening

Check our scoring stats and our place in the standings if you're unsure about why changes are necessary. And it's Feb. 24. 5 days left for our genius GM to do something.

  8. If you want to look at comparing their primes take the best statistical season from each player and compare it. Their best season is by definition "their prime". If that's too small of a sample size take their top 3 or even top 5 statistical seasons.

And you keep going back to Stanley Cups, Gold metals and these other parameters that in no way measure an individual's talent, which has been demonstrated multiple times in this thread to be a silly way to approach the problem. I don't know why you keep having to rely on that.

Are you serious? You honestly value points more than Stanley Cups? There's a reason Toews makes 10.5 million a year and Datsyuk makes 7. Chicago isnt asking their captain to win art ross trophies. They just want Stanley Cups. And Toews is delivering them.

  9. Billyboy was only comparing stats up to age 27 for each player. So Datsyuk only had a few season in the NHL and Toews had like 8. That conveniently excludes Datsyuk's other cup, selke trophies, and half of his statistical output, and compares it to Toews' entire NHL career. Thus Toews is clearly the best player.

Sorry. I realize it skews the argument, but how else are we going to do it? Someone said "in their primes", so i figured all we could use as comparisons for that measure are stats up to age 27. If we go with total careers, Toews might end up with 5 or 6 more cups, 1 or 2 more selkes, 100-200 more points, 3 or 4 more gold medals, etc etc etc than Datsyuk. I'm not Nostradomus, but it's looking like Toews is a sure fire Hall of Famer much like Stevie Y. Datsyuk is probably going to have to play a few more years to solidify his case for the HHOF.

  10. Our pp has problems because we do not have a good right handed player. Green is not the guy we wanted him to be at the point, either. The opponent has figured out that they can cheat all their coverage to one side of the ice. The puck is going to go there no matter what. It reminds me of 3rd grade basketball where your opponent has a point guard who can only dribble with his right hand. Stick a kid on him and overplay his right hand 75% and game over. Same with our pp.

  11. If it were me I would roll with

    Z - Pav- Abs

    Nyq- AA - Larkin

    Tatar-Richards-Jurco

    Sheahan-Glendening-Helm

That 3rd line is an enormous liability.

Tatar and Richards are terrible together.

I know it's not popular (yet), but I'd like to see Frk and Mantha called up.

    Mantha-Larkin-Frk

    Jurco-Datsyuk-Zetterberg

    Abdelkader-Sheahan-Nyquist

    Athanasiou-Helm-Glendening

Tatar and Richards have been so piss poor over the last 10 games. I like Tatar, but he needs to either take that next step and become a defensively responsible player, or he needs to be replaced. Do as Datsyuk does should be his motto.

  12. Guys,

If you havent picked up a streamsmart yet, then do it. I've been watching all the Grifs games, and I can tell you with certainty that Frk will be a better NHLer than Tatar and Nyquist. He plays with more speed and has a really nice shot from all over the ice. Tatar and Nyquist are good from 20 feet in. Pulkkinen is good from 20 feet out. Frk is good inside the blue line. He's faster and bigger than Nyquist, Tatar, and Pulks. Mantha and Frk are a couple guys to be excited about. They arent Larkin good, but they're still good.

  13. It's easy to think highly of Toews in the playoffs when his team makes it far almost every year. If Dats made it to the finals every other year, he'd likely have good numbers as well.

Toews is a good player but he's also a lucky player in arguably the best franchise in current day hockey as far as playoff success is concerned. I mean the addition of Panarin has been such an impact. They just rinse and repeat even as they lose players and gain new finds like Panarin.

You can do that when your captain and core are rock solid.
