Agreed. And forwards who move the puck well are referred to as play-makers. But getting back to Helm. He’s definitely not a play-making forward, But after Datsyuk and Zetterberg, so far this year, he’s been the third best “possession” forward IMO. Meaning he’s integral in moving the puck forward into the offensive zone, hanging on to the puck, and making offence happen. I think that Crymson’s original statement about our top 3 puck moving forwards being out is mostly accurate regardless of how we define Helm’s style of play. edit to add: Ultimately, by definition, DeKeyser fits the bill, and his absence hurts possibly even more than Helm. Captain Obvious here, I know.

You don’t think Helm’s ability to skate the puck with speed through the neutral zone almost at will counts as puck moving? No one’s saying he's Adam Oates.

It’s true. I think we sorted it our in another thread. Weiss can be bought out but I think the Wings would be on the hook for 2.9M/year or something. The good news though is that the Wings cap should start going down as they bring in more rookies next year (Sheahan, Ferraro, Callahan, Almquist, whoever) and guys like DeKeyser, Tatar, Nyquist, and Smith are entering the golden years cap-wise for the Wings. They’ll be extremely productive players at very manageable RFA cap hits. Think Zetterberg in 2008. He won the Conn Smyth and Stanley Cup, making something like 2.8M. Ka-RAY_ZAY.

Except he always got #1 minutes in Florida. On the PP, etc. That will give you better numbers. Even if he was ripping it up in Detroit, he's still behind D and Z on the depth chart. He'll never get 70. I think 50-65 points is a reasonable expectation for him. With the way this season has been going, I'd be happy if he was able to finish with 35.

For a team that's struggled a bit 5-on-5, and for a guy that matches up vs top lines night in and night out, that +12 rating is impressive. He's sniffing Norris finalist type numbers right now.

Can contracts signed post-lockout/cap decrease be bought out using the amnesty buy out? Not that Holland would do this, and not like I'm saying he should. Just curious.

I can't imagine any hockey scenario that would see Kronwall having any chance of hitting Cowan. They're both defensemen. Unless Cowan (who skates like Hal Gill) leads a rush up the boards and gets met by Kronwall, or Kronwall pinches deep behind the goal-line to take a run at Cowan? Never happen.

I’d say that now’s the time to go after Cowen. But know way that cement-footed luddite gets sent out there this late in the game. You can’t punch and elbow the puck into the net can you?
