They were over-rated last year, benefiting from an inspired Habs victory over Boston. They are going to be worse this year without Poulliot, Brian Boyle, Stralman, Brassard, etc.

So what do you do? What does Holland do? Hope that the new arena and M-1 rail are enough to attract free agents?

Well the Erhoff deal was clearly a “sign here for a year for a chance to be Crosby’s boyfriend/win a cup” sort of thing.

Of course you would cherry pick that quote. Any Wings fan that knows what’s up knows that there is about a 5% chance that they actually want Quincey back. This quote is just the product of a PR spin. The Wings official site is not going to come out and say “the Wings have no interest in bringing back Quincey because he sucks”.

But a better mediocre team than last year’s with one of Boyle, Erhoff, Niskanen, or Gilbert IMO. Add in a pinch of not-freakishly-bad health, and this team could surprise. Maybe.

I'd be fine and complelty relieved with either guy. But I'm not holding my breath. I still think Nisksnen goes to Minnesota and even though Philly are -200,000k in cap space, I think they'll go hard after Erhoff and worry about the cap later because that's how they roll.

Just wanted to wiggle in here again and say: Niskanen to Minnesota Boyle to St Louis/NYR Gilbert to Detroit I like Niskanen and Boyle, and I’d be thrilled if we got either one, but this is what I see actually happening.

My favourite part of the article: Cool to know that Larkin is the “best player in the country” according to Lombardi I love the way Lombardi runs a team. I think, right now, he’s the best GM in the league. But he talks a little more than he should and has a lot to learn from Holland about what to say to the media. Why shoot your face off like this?

Some of you may disagree with his approach to trades and UFA signings. Fair enough. But one thing Holland can do as a GM is run a draft. I think we should all, as intelligent Wings fans, be able to agree on this.

It sounds like he plays a little more north-south than Filpulla. He’ll also be bigger.

Not just any pick. A third round pick. That’s some good GMing by Benning. Basically, today he got Bonino, Sbisa, a 24th overall pick, a 50th overall pick, and Dorsett by giving up Kesler, Garrison, and a third rounder. Vancouver will be harder to play against next year. The days of the soft Canucks may have come to an end.

Here’s hoping Holland can dump Kindl and Andersson on someone tomorrow for a 2nd round pick.

I’m usually a pretty optimistic LGWer and stand sternly in the pro-Holland camp. Do you research. I’m think this pick was safe and boring. I understand you’re not going to get Stamkos at #15. But trade down a few spots grab Kempe and pick up that 2nd round pick you’re missing? Who knows, maybe that wasn’t an option. Whatever, time will tell. IN Kenny I trust.

Cool. So we took a guy who has the upside of a career 3rd line center? For the record, Helm went in the 5th round.

Emmerton 2.0 (hopefully not)

For fans that grew up watching a team like the one in 2002 assemble itself, it's safe to say that we're just spoiled. It used to be fun being a Wings fan on July 1st and at the trade deadline, until the southern team's owners and their little bald gremlin minion got together and ruined it

True, but Niskanen has a pedigree (former 1st round pick) and has visible tools (extremely athletic, tremendous shot, right handed). Leino was just a lanky sloth with decent hands that wasn't bad at ragging the puck.

He told the Canuucks that he'd only accept a trade to Anaheim and Chicago. Or at least that's what reliable media sources like MacKenzie and Dreger believed to be the case. So that's basically the same thing no?

Yup. Holland should start ripping his shirt like Hulk Hogan, and roaring like the Incredible Hulk about how he's going to punch Franzen in the nuts and then trade for all the awesome players. Or he could say something about how he wants the team to improve, go deeper in the playoffs, and how he'd like a top 4 right handed D man. But he already said that. Except people hear what he says, and they think, for some inexplicable reason, that this mean that he doesn't care about the team improving, he just wants to make the playoffs and keep polishing his "streak" trophy and doesn't give a s*** all of a sudden about losing in the first round, and is out golfing instead of trying to acquire that much needed defensemen. FML

Totally. The 15th pcik vs 24th alone would have been a strong starting point. It works both ways too. As in: I wouldn't be suprised if the Wings brass were none too keen on Kesler anyway and I probably wouldn't blame them if this was the case.
