I don't want to give up our future for the guy, but come on- he's almost exactly what we need. He's a top pairing d-man that can provide offense and a net front presence on the power play, which are the things we've lacked most since lidstrom and holmstrom retired. If we have the cap space to re-sign him, even if it's for a couple years too many, I'd do it. A first, a second, and a prospect isn't much to give up for that... we have more mediocre defense prospects and good forward prospects than we have available roster space for going forward, and datsyuk is gone after next year.

I would personally like to thank crap teams who need to grossly overpay sub-elite talent in order to keep them there. Now every player of that calibre can use them as an example at to become grossly overpaid arbitration. Thanks buffalo, Columbus, Ryan O'Reilly, and Brandon saad!

Sorry wrong thread.... But while I'm here, I think green can make a world of difference on this team, but only if he stays out of the coaches dog house for his shortcomings. But that was a Babcock strategy (which I hated) so we'll see.

this is how I feel as well. We had nothing to lose by giving him one last shot. Waive him if he sucks at the start of the season. If he resurrects his career somewhere else, we'll probably feel pretty stupid. Oh well, hopefully this is the precursor to a bigger move.Dumb move. We're not hurting for cap space next season and now Weiss is on the books for 6 seasons. If Weiss still didn't improve under Blashill, we could have done the same thing next year for a more reasonable penalty over 4 seasons rather than 6.

So is this guy legit, or what?

Yeah... If I had even a few grand right now, it would be a life changer. I can't pity his millions or give him any real sympathy at all.

Did this just become awkward?

Basically, he's a mediocre checking line forward with a couple moves. He'll probably have one good year and cash in, sorta like martin lapointe. Lol wasn't he captain of the 'hawks? Ooh, maybe he's another kopecky??!?

I like the brawl star game idea lol.

I think we really need a good offensive defensiveman, even if he isn't the greatest defensively at this point. Kronwall is the only one putting up points right now. I keep hoping Smith will turn the corner, and maybe with some powerplay time he'd deliver, but I never really see him bury his chances or make a great play.

Johnny Hockey from the Flames, the guy is small, undersized but has unbelievable hands and even if others are trying to hit him he is too fast! Unbelievable talent
Johnny Hockey? You mean Johnny Gaudreau?

I'm really starting to think that abdominal injury he was stuck with last year could have destroyed his career. I say this because i merely tweaked a groin muscle at work probably a year ago, and it was never the same. It makes you feel like you can't move in directions or ways you once could, and that strength you relied on to be agile is greatly reduced... jonathan cheecho I think had sports hernia surgies, and iirc Osgood did too. Neither of those guys were the same after.

Well unless his hands are beautiful at fightin' we need to trade that bum for someone to keep Datsyuk healthy. Besides he's redundant. We've got size, grit, and offensive savvy in spades.
Lol I hope you're being sarcastic. We might have offensive savvy at times... but not the first two.

Makes sense, and I acknowledge the grey area that can be complicated to deal with. Overall it's pretty well controlled, so I'd say if a new thread pops up with which could be a duplicate, let the quality of discussion dictate the survival of the thread. overall it's not too bad, and I think anything that is newsworthy, like a big hit, suspension, injury or a nice goal, should be enough justification for a new thread. thanks. and the cleary/holland/franzen bashing is getting a bit old, whether it's justified or not imho.

I would like to bring up a rule I'm not sure I like on here. It regards the whole problem with starting multiple threads for the same topic. I've seen new threads about something fairly important get deleted because they were being discussed, and buried, in another large thread. Then, when you see an old thread about the topic get brough back, it'll get deleted too. Why have a million pages of forum topics if we can't start a new discussion or read or talk about a specific thing? I don't want to read through 85 pages of text to talk about one signing, it's a waste of time.

Man, when I saw the thread title I thought it was going to actually look like pac man, with face of the cage being the mouth. I think that would've been way more badass, like he's boasting he just gobbles up every puck that comes at him.

I would have to agree that perhaps it would be time to 'promote' holland out of the position at this point... had we not lost Nill and Yzerman. But isn't Develanno still president, old as hell? And doesn't Ken Holland prefer to be a GM? Let's be real, Holland does some dumb stuff, like that roster logjam to start last season... except we didn't lose anyone on waivers and wound up with impressive forward depth throughout the season, so I think he's doing pretty well. I wish he'd make a trade though every once Iin awhile.I think the main reason we can't get defenseman anymore is because Lidstrom is gone and 'top pairing' defenseman can't just come here, relax, and pad their stats like they used to.

Bonino had more points than kesler last year and is a few years younger, so I feel like this trade is maybe more fair than it apparently seems. Having Getzlaf and Kesler down the middle though, is probably as good a one two punch as you'll find anywhere.

I'm gonna have to go with the habs, but it'll be close. the games I watched where these teams played detroit, it seemed like montreal had an edge on us in regards to speed and used it to mount a good attack, whereas new york played s fast and structured defense which seemed to effectively box us out.

If a player comes in and thinks he can get paid and not perform, then I'm content with a player like that signing elsewhere- it's a favorable deterrent.
Only reason I think he's on drugs because of his demeanor in an interview, where he was almost goofy happy and his eyes were glazed over like he was on painkillers, which would also explain how he played through a sports hernia and now isn't getting better. besides, his production dropped a great deal after that wrist injury so I'd say it possible for sure, but I admit it is a bit of an unlikely long shot that I'm coreect about that.

If a playeris injured, I don't think you can buy them out. I Bet he knows there is a good chance of them buying him out if he doesn't make an impact over the next few games, so he's sitting tight so he can have a full season to make an impression next year. The guy's a turkey, and I think he's on drugs.

I'd say it was about the right time for him to hang em up. Congrats on a good career. Hall of fame worthy? I'm kinda on the fence with him imho...
