last night during the 1st intermission of the preds-oiler game, kelly hrudy (god, having a brain fart and can't remember his name) was talking with the glasses dude (again, terrible with names) and made these observations about tootoo: --there's no place in the nhl for what tootoo does. claims tootoo deliberately tries to hurt people. --predicted that if tootoo doesn't change his game he will be out of the nhl in a few years. --said it'd be hard for tootoo to change because of his celebrity status. he's treated like a rock star for doing what he's doing. anyone else catch that segment? i was like "right on!" they nailed tootoo to the wall and called him out for what he is: an idiot punk.

the point of this thread is that others in the media--including the hockey night in canada crew (pretty knowledgable about the game--more so than anyone living in nashville, i'd wager) think tootoo tries to recklessly hurt people and is danger of playing himself right out of the league. yeah, we get it: you don't think so. too bad, so sad. if another player somday ends tootoo's career, know what the media is going to say? yeah, they'll of course act all shock and horrified that it happened--but they'll in the same breath say (in so many words) that tootoo dug his own grave. those who live by the sword, die by it. there's a vast difference between a hard-nosed player and getting under the skin of an opponent and what tootoo does. again, i wouldn't expect people in nashville to understand that in any sort of historical hockey context.

it's a cut-and-dried play: accidental, intentional, whatever: if a player's stick touches the head of an opposing player it's high sticking. if the player gets cut, it's a double minor. end of discussion. beyond that, you can debate the merits of the rule but that's the rule in black and white.

under the circumstances (playing last night, nashville not) they played well. then again, i hate making excuses. they screwed up at the end and gave this game away.

the wings lost this game because they went into what's called, in football terms, "prevent a win defense." it's like they took stupid tablets at about the 18 minute mark of the 3rd and started collapsing on the net in the defensive zone and letting the preds skate circles around them. oh, and then for good measure they continued with that passive/flopping/hoping play in overtime. end of discussion. new thread please.

no offense, but i'd trade the preds for the maple leafs any day of the week. hard for me to get into this whole "big rivalry" thing with a team that struggles to put fans in the seats and is rumored to have an iffy future in the league. bettman has done his best to force-fed this "rivalry" onto the wings, one of the original 6 teams. disgusting. insulting.

gotta say something about the reporting at that site, from a legal standpoint. did this guy directly talk to nil, andersson, etc and get those quotes himself? some of the quotes from nill mirror quotes of his in the freep story. and *if* he pulled these quotes from other places and didn't attribute them...that's a problem. again, i don't know the full story here and i'm certainly not accusing anyone of anything. it just isn't clear where those quotes came from. if they came from him, he should do what the freep did and say "we sat down with nill and here's what he told us."
