That's a strange amount of power to have in the draft. When the draft hits pick #41 SY can basically look around the room and decide who he wants. Maybe he wants 1 guy. Maybe 2. Maybe 3. But if he wants say 1 he can then be open for business for trades. I think other teams are gonna look to the wings for trades. The elephant in the room is that wwe all know SY is probably going to package the 18th pick and one of his 2nd rounders for something he wants. The only thing we don't know is what SY wants.

What does a Seider extension look like? We have to extend Berggren, Ras, and Raymond as well this coming year. I think their extensions will largely be based on performance in this coming year. But Seider is another animal entirely. He's our bonafide superstar #1 Dman. SY bridged Hedman, but I think this would be a mistake for Mo. Hedman was a slow starter so it was warranted. But also the salary cap is predicted to dramatically rise over the next few years once covid escrow is paid off. So if we delay paying Seider with a bridge we may end up paying him a much larger cap hit down the road. I say lock him now on a massive 8 year deal. $9 million x 8 years.

To understand why the league would do this you have to understand the difference between Chicago and Detroit. They are the inverse of one another. Detroit is a small market compared to Chicago. Less than half the metro residents. But despite this, Detroit has one of the largest fanbases in the entire league. Even during the blashill years Detroit fans outnumbered most. Check reddit or HF boards if you need proof of that. Go to a Wings game in the defending champs arena in Denver, it will be half wings fans. Chicago doesnt enjoy this luxury. They might be an original 6 team, but theyre not a hockey town. Hawks fans are fickle. From 2005 to 2010 (the lead up to their dynasty) they doubled their revenue from their fans jumping on the bandwagon. All of the sudden they became a juggernaut earner for the NHL. And when youre the 3rd largest city in the USA you need to be a juggernaut earner. The Wings revenue doesnt fluctuate like this. Ours goes up everyyear no matter what. This is why the NHL has done 300 outdoor games in Chicago since theyve come up. They want to develop that market and create a huge loyal wingsesque fan base there. But uh oh.
