I can give you two reasons he may have written that: 1. It's his opinion 2. It was funny Back to the topic, which seems to get highjacked quite frequently be certain posters, I agree with someone (Heaton, I think) that called it a passive-aggressive calling out. Babcock pointed the finger at himself while saying the two didn't play with as much energy as normal. Nice job with mind games if, indeed, his goal was to send a small message to the Eurotwins.
-
I thought the minute 30 mark would have been a good time also. However, I wouldn't have done it any sooner. It's hard to second guess Babcock, though.
-
I completely agree. Everyone saw what was done to Homer and either something gets done about it or it doesn't. However, we've spent the past few days on here ripping on the Penguins for whining and we should try to avoid being like that. I think everyone agrees that what they did to Homer is bs.
-
Ok, that's your opinion and I have mine. Personally, I'd have added some depth at forward and not counted on a 36 year old, past his prime, McCarty. BTW, Dabura, I'm with you about Holland. I'm not a huge fan although he has done some good things since the cap has gone in.
-
I used "luckily" because as a wing's fan, i feel very lucky that it's worked out. 2-0 in the Stanley Cup finals? We're the luckiest fans in all of hockey. I don't think it was because Holland was smart at the deadline, it was because he's been smart getting young talent, signing them long term to reasonable salaries, taking a gamble on Osgood, etc...
-
True and as it's turned out, everything is fine. Plus, you're just happy that Huds wasn't traded.
-
My big apology to Kenny would be the Rafalski signing. I was livid when they signed him. I thought they needed a gigantic second line scorer. I certainly didn't expect Franzen to become that person.
-
If there was a 12th forward who didn't suck as much as McCarty, he could have played more minutes than the 3-4 minutes McCarty got, which would mean less ice time for the big guns, less penalties, etc..... A roster with a 12th forward who is better than the current 12th forward is a better roster. This is all so meaningless. I simply refuse to call Holland smart for not adding players at the deadline when the Wings were banged up and losing much more than winning. Luckily, everyone's gotten healthy and things are going great. However, I can't call him smart for standing pat when he had extra money available. By the way, I WILL call him smart for his masterful cap work and getting the young guns signed to long term deals (except Z, so far) as well as making certain the D-corp is solid for years to come.

As it turns out, true. Luckily for all of us.
-
Yup, and he's still 5 times better than McCarty. I never said he could help more than Cleary, Drake, etc.... I said he's better than McCarty. Besides, I was only using Lapointe as an example.
-
Yup, sorry I made a mistake. Luckily everyone does it. I think this is being blown out of proportion. I'm not saying Holland sucks. All I said was I think he missed on a chance to improve the team at the deadline. Yes, this team's great as it is, but no one knew at the deadline how things would turn out. The Wings were in the midst of a rash of injuries and were about to endure a BRUTAL February. They were HORRIBLE in February. Depth players seemed like common sense to me then and still do. Despite what Heaton says, LaPointe, or any other number of virtually free players, would have helped immensely when Franzen was out.
-
That's exactly what I wanted!
-
OH MY LORD, THAT'S NOT WHAT I SAID! If you could have guaranteed me a Cup in February then I'd have been happy. But, if my memory serves me correctly, there were A LOT of people on here who were not happy that secondary scoring and depth were not addressed. I think Holland not adding depth was a very risky move. It's worked out very well, fortunately, but I don't find his lack of activity at the deadline "smart".
-
Being told that I have no intelligence, I find irritating and unnecessary. Was I wrong? Yes, I was. Being told that I am nitpicking is irritating. I simply said that I won't call Holland Smart for not adding depth at the deadline. That's NOT nitpicking and the fact that I was wrong about something doesn't mean that I have no hockey intelligence.
-
You're right. My bad. Hossa is a rental. I offer my sincerest apologies. I never once said the Wings should trade for Hossa. I wanted some cheap, depth to help in case of injury.
-
I'm stunned that everyone is being so bitter about this. It's not a big deal but I won't call Holland "Smart" for not picking up roll players that could have helped. I'm not being petty or nitpicking. You guys are all going nuts about this. I would have preferred he added a little depth in case of an injury, that's all I'm saying. Geeez, people need to relax.
-
I never said Stuart wasn't a good addition. I said they could have picked up other players for next to nothing. I don't think that warranted a personal attack like saying I don't know anything about hockey. You're all offended because I don't think Holland is "Smart" for turning his back on players who would have helped the team. Sorry. By they way, Pittsburgh did sign Hossa to an extension. Since a rental is a player who is with the team until the end of the year only, he isn't a rental. Now, I could stoop to your level and begin insulting your hockey intelligence, but I'll pass because I realize people can have differing opinions.
-
Those two were just examples. I can't believe you'd rather have McCarty than players were much more talented. But, you can have your opinions. Personally, I'd take either Lapointe or Fedorov (I realize the likelihood of them being traded to Detroit were remote and I'm merely using them as examples of serviceable players who were traded for next to nothing) over McCarty any day.
-
Hossa signed a long term deal, therefore he's not a rental player.
-
Nice rant. I simply said they could have improved their roster for next to nothing. Lapointe is better than McCarty, that's a simple fact. Instead of having Mac play 3-5 minutes a game and taking numerous stupid penalties the past two weeks, we could have had a legitimate player out there playing 8-10 minutes a game, which gives more rest to the big guns, and not taking as many penalties. You're blowing this out of proportion. It's all worked out well but to call Holland "Smart" for not improving the roster is odd, to me.
-
So, you're saying you'd rather have had McCarty playing the last two weeks than having someone like LaPointe or Fedorov or some other rental they could have picked up for next to nothing? Not me. Being 5 mill under the cap means nothing to a guy like Illitch, who regularly spent 80 million a year on the wings before the cap. They had a need at the deadline and he could have filled it cheaply, yet he didn't. It's all worked out ok, though, so he gets a pass this time. Still, it wasn't a SMART move, as you described it.
-
I still don't agree. Being 4-5 million under the cap when you're trying for a cup is stupid. Are you telling me that a rental player wouldn't have filled in nicely for the two weeks that Franzen was injured? Instead, McCarty was in and we all know what he's done. You don't get extra points for being under the cap. For example, Marty Lapointe was traded for a fourth round draft pick (I think). He sure would have been handy the past two weeks.
-
I couldn't disagree more. The two hits aren't even close to being the same.
-
Roberts has always played like this. I also thought Franzen took a shot to the open eye, either the glove or a thumb, and that's why he went down. Either way, it was bush league by Roberts and even the Pittsburgh Gazetter agrees. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08148/885120-150.stm

Did you guys read the comments after the article? One guy called the Wings "Goons". LMAO
