Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa
therock48880 replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
Oops, I thought you were one of the ones who spent half the season defending Sammy. Yeah, Hossa did play well in game 5. Actually, he played well in all of the games except game 6 in which case he disappeared. He led the team in shots on goal and played very well defensively. But it's really not worth debating. I understand your point. He's paid to score and he didn't do it. However, my feeling is that I'm pissed at ALL of the Wings that pulled a disappearing act in the finals, not just Hossa. -
Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

So, do you no longer love Hudler, Sammy, and all of the other Wings that didn't show up for the finals? Btw, it was a seven game series. -
You've got the same one I was thinking about. Beating the Ducks was one of my top goals for the Wings this year. Losing the cup to the Pens sucked, but knowing that they beat the Ducks took a little sting off the Penguin loss for me. On a related note, I've debated with myself and another friend about this topic. What if Anaheim would have won game seven. Would their physical dominance have been too much for Pitt? I don't see anyone on the Penguin roster capable of containing the Getzlaf line and Getzlaf is a GREAT defender. He would have had either Crosby or Malkin in fits. I'm almost thinking the Ducks would have beaten them in 7 games, but would also have beaten them up. I know that's off topic but I'd like to hear other people's opinions. Good thread OP

No, they'd be getting a draft pick for NOTHING since Hossa wasn't going to sign here anyways.

I was just reading through the article about trading his rights and I noticed that it says that his rights would likely be traded "BY Monday." Monday is only a couple hours away and if his rights get traded by then, it would need to happen pretty quickly. If that quote is true, this whole situation could be coming to an end tonight, which would be nice. So, hopefully, within the next two and a half hours there will be a conclusion. "June 28, Edmonton Journal: If Marian Hossa doesn't take the Red Wings' long-term offer for between $4 and $5 million a year, Detroit will trade his negotiating rights, likely by Monday, two days before free agency opens. Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

Hossa's production dropped after that too. Coincidence??? -
You're right. This shows the difference between Holland and Shero last year. Shero sat and waited because Hossa said he liked playing in Pitt. He's said all year long that he loved playing in Detroit but Holland isn't going to wait around for him. He's got a deadline and if Hossa doesn't accept it by that time he'll be an LA King. Holland refuses to have his hands tied by one player and that's the way it should be.

Holland "Not Optimistic" about re-signing Hossa

You're reading my mind here. I was thinking that it sounded like Holland was doing a little negotiating in the press. Winter's pay is directly tied to how much Hossa signs for so he is trying to get as much as possible. Hossa has yet to say anything and I truly think he wants to stay in Detroit. Time will tell. If he stays, GREAT. If he goes, I wish him well and hope Kenny signs some more grit. -

I just hope that if a deal isn't in place on July 1, that he'll pursue other needs and not wait on Hossa. Neal! -
That's a great point. Those two morons were the source of my hatred also. To be honest, I often find myself marveling at Getzlaf. The guy's awesome and is only going to get better.
-
Exactly! I'd like Hossa to come back but if he doesn't, my dream would be for Neil and Lappy to get signed. I know it won't happen, but I can dream......
-
Yeah, this is a great trade for the Ducks, long-term. That's an awful lot for Philly to give up for a guy in his mid 30's. Having said that, I can't wait to see the Flyers play the Pens.
-
I wonder if the league would allow him to have a 12 year deal since he's 30. They would have to approve any deal and I think that might be pushing it.
-
You've got the idea. I read a post that said he could get six million one year and one million the next and that is simply not possible. This CBA says that salaries can only decrease by a certain percentage each year. With you scenario posted above, two, possibly three trades would need to be made to create cap space. Hudler would need to be traded, Lilja, and someone else.
-
No it doesn't. The only time their salary counts against the Wings cap is when they are called up. Since they both spent the majority of their time in GR, their salaries had very little impact on the cap.
-
This is the salary cap era. Style has nothing to do with it. Money does. Ericsson is cheaper and he has to be on the roster this year. If they make room for him by getting rid of Lebda, as you suggest, they actually GAIN money against the cap. The idea was to try to LOSE money. I would argue differently in terms of Lebda. For his price tag, he's very valuable. Same with Meech, imo. I agree that the Wings missed Lilja in the playoffs. I'm not debating that. It's all about money at this point.

Ottawa Sun: Wings have made lucrative long term offer to Hossa

Looks like they're aways apart in negotiations. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...en_red_win.html "Hossa's agent, Ritch Winter, is seeking a deal worth $6 million per season. The Red Wings, because of their limited salary cap space, can't afford to give him much more than $4 million per season." -

One thing is for sure, I still love this time of the year. I liked it better before the cap but all of the speculation about who will be going where is killing me! For the record, I hope Hossa stays but if he goes I won't go postal and create a 125 page thread about how Hossa has signed somewhere else. (that was a joke Pens fans) The cap space would be nice, but I'd prefer the world-class player. -

I understand. I read those quotes too. But since he said that, the cap has been set. Interesting piece of info. Apparently there are rumors that the Wings want Wild backup goalie Josh Harding. " June 25, Star-Tribune: And right now [Wild GM Chuck] Fletcher's in on a lot of different things, from [Dany] Heatley to countless other things (lots of rumors, but I only report what I know from sources, not what's just floating around) to talking with Toronto, Edmonton, Colorado, Detroit, St. Louis and Philly about Josh Harding." http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/06/tw..._stories_f.html -

The cap is now set. I read it in the "09-10 Cap" thread. It's supposed to be right around the 56.7 of this season. I also read somewhere that it may go up a couple hundred thousand more than that. So, I guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 57 million, give or take a little bit. -
Sure you can. They can be over the cap until the regular season starts. With Ericsson's emergence, I think it's safe to say the Lilja's days as a Wing are numbered if he's healthy and if he's not healthy, he will be on IR. I think the Wings will go to camp way over the cap. I think they'll sign Hossa and Hudler and then start looking at trades during camp. I still think Filpulla may be the odd man out.

Also, keep in mind that Rich Winter, Hossa's agent, has already stated that the salary cap won't deter Hossa from signing in Detroit. ""I will tell you this: despite what people are saying, the salary cap in Detroit will definitely be no impediment to Marian signing there," said Winter. http://www.kuklaskorner.com/index.php/hock...ossa_situation/ This article states that the cap hit will be around 6 illion, though. -

I got it from the freep. http://www.freep.com/article/20090614/SPORTS05/906140554/ "Since mid-season Hossa has said he would take less money to stay in Detroit. He has said he doesn't want to keep moving around the NHL, that he wants to settle down with a long-term contract. That works to the Wings' advantage, because they can figure out a way to offer him as much as 10 years provided the salary cap hit is right around $4 million a season, similar to Johan Franzen's deal. Hossa, 30, made $7.45 million this past season, and if he wants similar money, he won't be staying in Detroit." -

40 million dollars is pretty lucrative. The majority of that 40 million would come in the first 6-7 years. -

Best post I've read all day. ANYONE would love to have Hossa and a 4 million cap hit. Hell, I bet they'd all want him with a 4.5 million cap hit also. Dats: 6.7 z: 6.083 Hossa: 4.0 Franzen: 3.95 Flip: 3.0 Cleary: 2.8 Draper: 1.583 Leino: 1 Maltby: .883 Kopecky: .550 Helm: .600 Holmstrom: 2.25 Lids: 7.45 Rafalski: 6 Stuart: 3.75 Kronwall: 3 Ericsson: .900 Lebda: .650 Meech: .483 Ozzie: 1.417 Howard: .717 Total 57.87 million In this scenario, a guy like Meech becomes very valuable since he can fill in at forward and d. Players lost: Lilja Hudler Sammy Players gained (full time for the regular season) Helm Leino Ericsson
