    2008 nhl free agents

I wouldn't be thrilled w/ Carney. He's getting up there and, as I understand it, has basically been a non-presence in Minnesota this year.

Commodore - big red mop in a Red Wings jersey, I'd love to see that. I don't think he'd be too pricey either. I'd love to see us get Rolston. Fedorov would be interesting but only if he brings something reliable. At this point perhaps he's the reliable secondary scorer that we need? The goalie situation makes me nervous, frankly. Fedoruk would be an insane waste of money. He's one good punch away from having his whole face fall off.

Even when Drake is 100% - Why not Downey full time?

Anyone know the ETA on Drake getting that shield off? I consider this a hypothetical conversation until that happens.

    East All-Star Voting

Huh...Lecavalier > Briere in my opinion. Philly is a bigger market though...this is what fan voting gets you.

    Tomas Fleischmann

I miss the pick but Fleischmann has only just started to stick in the NHL. We had a few good years with Lang while Fleischmann was languishing in the minors. I have no problem with that.

    Jiri Hudler

Personally, I think Filp looks a bit like Tinkerbell. All we need is another tiny forward to team up with him and Huds and we could have a line called The Pixies.

    Avery vs. Tucker

Didn't Avery go to L.A. while the team was being coached by Lewis, not Bowman? Am I confused about this?

    Jiri Hudler

I thought Huds generally looked good last night but I will say that there were multiple occassions when both he and Filpulla had the puck and a clear chance to shoot and opted to try and pass instead. I seem to recall screaming "Shoot!" quite a few times.

Dom Drops Ball, Ozzie Answers Call

Clearly, Hasek will retire and the Wings will sign Curtis Joseph, going on to win the Cup on karma alone.

    Scott Niedermayer has begun skating

I agree that if this were going to happen in the future, the team should be on the hook for the full salary. I'm interested in this idea of having rosters finalized by a certain point, like in baseball. What would be the reason not to do that?

    Scott Niedermayer has begun skating

Simply put, the players have agreed to the salary cap. If that cap is going to mean anything, loop holes that enable teams to get around it need to be closed. Otherwise the cap itself becomes laughable. Frankly, I think the league should simply come down on this practice like a ton of bricks. Why should a player be free to "decide" if the want to play for months? The player needs to make their decision by the beginning of the regular season. Grown ups don't get to say "I'm not sure if I want to go to work or not". If you want to participate, participate. If you don't, you don't get to until next year. None of this sneak in half way through and dodge the cap bullet garbage. Now, I'm not saying that's what Scott is doing. But what he's doing opens the door to that kind of abuse.

Like anything else, what constitutes a valid reason would be negotiable between the NHL and the NHLPA. I have thought about it. If a player is not obliged to have a reason for doing this other than their own personal whim, the salary cap becomes a farce.

    Scott Niedermayer has begun skating

Yeah...this shouldn't be allowed. If a player can't produce a valid reason for not playing (such as an injury) they shouldn't be able to just decide to show up several months into the season. That's just weasel city.

Todd Bertuzzi offered $350,000 last year...

I think what they expect is that a court, which will not share many hockey fans' odd willingness to look the other way concerning wanton acts of violence, will find that Bert owes more than that. If they thought they wouldn't do better in court, they'd take a deal. Clearly, they feel they will do better in court.

once again hudler gets screwed over

Hudler can still get his points on the PP, it's not like we have a shortage of PPs. Having him on the Drake and Kopecky's line gives that line considerably more scoring threat and gets us a tiny bit closer to the ideal situation of just being able to roll four lines.

    Howard's career potential: 1A goalie?

Heck who needs to update Lidstrom's? Just write "perfect" and leave it that way until you change it to "retired".
  17. For a player this good to be stopped before his time is a tragedy. I had honestly hoped to see Forsberg bounce back and play a few more solid years, eventually retiring on his own terms. It's sad for a champion to go out like this.

I wasn't super optimistic about this situation to begin with. This article makes me less optimistic. Grigorenko "not interested" in Grand Rapids.

NHL players to use heated blades

I'm with Hank on this one. I'm not sure I like this idea. Do we want players that are human rockets out there? I like the old school equipment just because the game feels more real.

    Funny pic of Ducks fan

I have to admit that Kopecky does look pretty small to me in most pics. It's odd. Plus there seem to be far too many pictures out there of him being knocked down. I'm beginning to wonder if he does anything other than getting knocked down.

    Boulerice gets 25 games

Vick committed a criminal act that was also remarkably barbaric. Heatley drove his car too fast and got into an accident. You're comparing apples and oranges here. As far as Boulerice goes, what does this move mean? Will Philly try to dump this guy? Would anyone take him?

    Boulerice gets 25 games

He was banned for life but the ban was largely symbolic because he was no longer eligible. The AHL made him sit a month or two, I think but then he could play. The guy he sticked in the face was nearly killed, not an exaggeration. This is a guy who has been the subject of a criminal investigation for what he did on the ice.
