The thing that baffles me about Pronger is that he could easily check you through a wall with a clean hit. He's enormous. He definitely does not have to go for the head or hit dirty to get the job done. He says he has to play his game to help his team win but that's bunk. He does it to put the fear into the other team and to possibly put a player out of the game. He could get the job done with clean hits.

Pronger is flat out dirty but we all know that the Anaheim system isn't troubled by trifles like that. I think it's great that they made this headhunter their captain. It totally gets the truth of the matter right out in the open. "Look here, world, this is the face of our team!"

I fail to see why this being his first NHL offense makes this somehow more tolerable. He is an adult, he can take responsibility. In addition he is a repeat offender in the OHL. Why should the NHL just ignore that fact? I agree that there is an unacceptable disparity between the punishment handed out to stars and that handed out to a rookie but, as I said before, two wrongs don't make a right. I rather get it wrong on Pronger and right on Downie than get is wrong on both of them.

Two wrongs definitely don't make a right. Simon should have gotten more and he shouldn't be playing in the preseason. At least the NHL got things right and actually punished this nut Downie. Let's remember, the kid is a repeat offender (suspended for more than 20 OHL games). I have no problem holding that record against him. The chump needs to learn someday or he needs to find a new line of work.

Is there a vid of this goal online anywhere?

My understanding is that this move is meant to capitalize on Draper's speed and play him on a scoring line. If he was playing center he'd be third line at best, behind Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Draper showed us he could score a couple seasons ago. Babcock is looking for more of that with this move. That's what I've read, anyway.

Matthias - probably another wasted promising prospect..

I'm not sure how you can argue that a team that includes Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Filpulla, Hudler, Kronwall, and Franzen fails to develop its prospects. I leave out future team members Howard and Kindl. I'm also leaving out players like Holmstrom and Lidstrom that have been brought up through our system and are still here, as well as players like Drake and Ozzy who have left and come back. I don't really think this is a team built solely through trades for vets, or that fritters away all its talented prospects. -
Man, Chelly is on pace to score eleventy billion goals this season (comparatively). Screw Grigs! Let's put Chelly on the RW with Pavel!

Yeah, I love the decapitation shot. That is a fabulous vid. Some of the Jack Johnson stuff on Youtube is priceless.

I couldn't agree more. I was totally baffled when this trade was made and I remain baffled. Seems like a panic move to me. I suppose there could have been some kind of personality issue between Johnson and the 'Canes front office but I can't imagine it was so bad as to trade him away for nothing, which is basically what they did.

It would have no effect on me at all. I watch the game to see the athleticism and for the excitement of the skill/speed/relatively low rate of scoring. I love a big, clean, hockey hit as much as the next guy (maybe more). But I love them because they are big and clean. That takes skill and I admire the skill. The fighting is a distraction that I don't very much enjoy. I've never played myself, but I guess I can't understand why hockey has some inherent need to include fighting when other sports don't. Why can't grown men play a game without periodically stopping to beat each other up?

I was an undergraduate at Michigan State when this happened. I was a fairly new hockey fan (only got into hockey in college because my family didn't watch it). I remember watching Konstantinov lift the cup and just shake it over his head. I remember thinking that he was really and truly a warrior. I saw that passion and ecstasy and I think I finally understood what it meant to be an athlete and a champion. I was hooked on the sport from that moment forward. To this day, hockey is the only sport I really care about and to this day I watch hoping to see those bright moments when these athletes rise above themselves and above the game and really accomplish something great.

Kubina may be good defensively but, as I understand it, he lacks the offensive power he had on the way to the cup.

I see what you mean. I suppose the only way this would make sense would be if a player like this was signed with the understanding that there are going to be vacancies in the roster in the near future. Chelios will be gone in a year and I don't have real trouble seeing Schneider as eventual trade-bait. Who knows? If you are right then I shudder to think what sort of talentless hack might be brought in to be our new "physical defenseman".

This is not a trade rumor and it is a repeat thread for the General Discussion forum. So....
-
Not necessarily. Holland has made it clear that Delmore is going to have to make the team. His position in our top 6 is far from guaranteed; he could end up playing in Grand Rapids. Remember, he's only getting 450,000.

link This is probably a disappointment to some who saw him keeping the Griffins tough this year.
-
Well...this is awfully mysterious. Is it a code?
-
If Datsyuk wants to sit in Russia we need to think seriously about trading him. He's UFA next year and we'll lose him for nothing.
-
Franzen may be only prospect signed This seems to imply that only Franzen may be signed.
-
That's a damn shame really. Liv was hyped a bit for a while and now he may turn out to be a disappointment. I would say that maybe there is still a chance for him but it isn't a very big chance.
-
That's an interesting point... I wonder if the "Comrie Loophole" would change under the new CBA. Regardless... the Grand Rapids Press has stated that the Wings are planning on signing him during the window. That's strange. I thought I heard Howard was going to stay in Maine one more year. Wouldn't signing with the Wings preclude that?
-
Yeah, Kronwall's been pretty much a sure thing since the end of last season. I seem to recall assertions by managment that he was ready to be in the regular line-up when the next season began. Sure, that ended up being longer than we would have liked but I really doubt things have changed, particularly in light of his great season this year.
