I hate goaltenders. All of them. Just play the game without them. We'll see higher scores and no more of these brutal threads.

Gaborik dropped his gloves first. He wanted to fight.

Poor Jimmy Howard. He can't win a shootout unless he stops every shot for 14 rounds.

You can't expect to win games on good luck, but you can expect things to even out over the course of a season so the bad bounces are balanced with some good ones. Not this year. Not for the Red Wings.

It's been a while since the Wings dominated a game and failed to get a point out of it. It's just like old times. A couple of mistakes cost the team. I fault the failure of the PP, the inability to finish on rebounds (they miss Homer and Franzen) and a stupid offensive zone penalty by Bertuzzi the most.

You could use this method but I don't know how you adjust for the fact the puck isn't spherical. What if it's on end instead of flat, or some degree of rotation in between? The center of the puck would need to be varying distances from the virtual line in those instances. I'm not sure it's so simple to determine whether it's over the line or not. Edit: After I replied, I see others have raised the same point.

Murphy and Keating explained what the NHL's explanation was after the game. Martell ruled it was no goal, but the other official (Leggo) and the linesman both felt it was a goal; Leggo overruled the call by Martell and called for the review in Toronto. The review in Toronto was inconclusive. But by that point, the video review would have had to overturn the ruling on the ice, which by then (unbeknownst to us viewers) was that it was a goal. I understand now why it went down the way it did. What I have a problem with is that Leggo overruled the call by Martell from where he was standing.

I'm assuming FSDetroit didn't have access to the conclusive replay. Because the ones we saw certainly weren't.

Attempting to break the single game NHL record for Most Failed Clearing Attempts.

I don't have an exact count, but I've seen at least 4 instances where a Red Wing had an easy clear and somehow managed to not get the puck out. In a couple instances, it didn't become dangerous. In a couple others, it turned into sustained pressure in Detroit's end.

I'm an avid Don Cherry fan and his passion for Canadian hockey doesn't bother me one bit. On the contrary, I love Canada's passion for the game. I envy that we don't have it in the U.S. The U.S. winning the under-17 challenge and the WJC is big-time news in Canada. In my own country, a very small percentage of people are even aware these events take place, whether the U.S. team wins or loses.

What an effort! That was the most complete game yet. The forechecking was tight, they were desperate clearing loose pucks and winning battles. They cleared the zone, they forced turnovers and didn't commit them. Great goaltending and capitalizing on opportunities. Hard to argue with this performance. If the Wings can get and stay healthy, they're going to be terrific. And if they do get in, some key players could start the playoffs rested if all goes well.

My condolences to the Canadians. I thought the game was fantastic. The goalies were a bit suspect on both sides but the play overall was terrific and the pace was off the charts. Really beautiful hockey to watch. I really envy the pride and passion from the Canadians when it comes to hockey. I have to find an online feed to watch the game here, but in Canada, the WJC is such a huge event. And the class of the fans cheering the winners no matter who it is. It's really remarkable. I'm really happy our kids found a way to pull this one out. The heartbreak of blowing another game like that would have been unbearable. Both teams played their hearts out.

I took the games listed on the first page of this thread and added the two games that have been played since then. I then ranked where each opposing team ranks in the standings as of today, 1st through 30th, and averaged them by goalie. Osgood: 10.00 Howard: 17.56 That's a pretty big difference. Ozzie's average opponent ranks 10th in the NHL overall, which likely means a middle-seed playoff team in either conference. Howard's average opponent is closer to 18th, which would miss the playoffs in at least one of the conferences. Now, that's a measure of the quality of opponent, but it's not a measure of the kinds of offense each goalie is facing. So, I ranked the teams by GFA and did the same thing for each goalie. Osgood: 12.17 Howard: 15.64 Here, it gets closer, but Ozzie still has had the tougher task. Ozzie is facing teams that rank about 12th league-wide in goal scoring while Howard faces a team closer to 16th. Howard's save percentage is significantly better and it can't all be explained by the quality of offenses he's facing; he's simply been the better goalie thus far. But Ozzie has definitely had the tougher opposition and is performing better than a casual glance would indicate.

It was a very good road win, against a good team. Terrific work ethic, lots of desperation clearing rebounds, digging pucks out of the corners, etc. I notice the Wings were playing a little more refined puck possession game in the last 30 minutes or so. They were moving the puck well and not sitting back as much. Not only did the Lidstrom-shot-from-the-point-to-Holmstrom routine work, I actually witnessed a (gasp) drop pass tonight. We've been seeing so much dump and chase and caution not to get caught up ice that it's actually striking to witness these kinds of offensive plays.

Ritola's name should be pronounced like this.

I'm not getting the Phoenix feed, but am I understanding that Tyson Nash is on their crew? If so, wow. Brutal.

I guess that's true, unless we go back to ties. I dunno, I'm fine with whatever they do, to be honest. If they adopted this system, I'd be okay with it. The thing is, regardless of what we think as fans, the league loves the fact that the standings are all bunched together.
-
The shootout is essentially hide and seek. OT is still hockey. The shootout win counting the same as a hockey win is the fatal flaw with this proposal.
-
Lidstrom again?! I don't care if it was tipped or not, this is a very, very good thing to see!

Why does the simple concept of clearing the puck out of the zone elude this team so often?
