Not near as much of a disgrace as it was when Howard didn't get a penalty for attacking Perron. And when a fan favorite and key member of the future of this team comes back from a year long absence due to a concussion, and in his 2nd game back he is wrongly attacked by a guy and has to dodge punches to his face...yeah, the fans are going to be a little upset that he wasn't penalized...it's not surprising they want to talk about it. I'd say it would be very strange for fans to not care about that incident and only care about the fact the Blues won. Perron himself said he had to try to make sure he didn't catch one of the punches in the head. But I guess I'm talking to a wall here. You guys have your blinders on. Fair enough.
-
Are you f'ing kidding me? No evidence at all? How blind are you? Give me a break. Both Stuart and Perron said contact couldn't be avoided. Perron was skating in front and Stuart checked him into Howard. It's not a difficult play to analyze at all if you objectively look at it without bias. Elliot flopped back, sure...but that still doesn't change the fact Abdelkader drove into him pretty hard...without being pushed or directed into Elliot. Abdelkader deserved a penalty for being careless...and Elliot could have gotten a diving penalty if you want to get picky. But hey, you guys are the experts on goalie dives...Hasek did play for you guys for a while. And if you give Perron a penalty, you absolutly have to give Howard a penalty for jumping on top of Perron and taking a few shots. I don't think Blues fans would have been nearly as upset if Howard would have gotten a penalty as well and things evened out...but he didn't, and they didn't. So instead of one bad call on the play, there are two...a bad call and a bad no-call...which resulted in a goal for Detroit on the PP. An absolute gift from the officials.

New to the sport eh? 3 years ago. And a couple years before that... does 25 years in a row ring a bell?
-
In Jimmy's defense? What? That is my whole point. Don't run your mouth until you are sure and have seen a replay. You just come off looking like a fool. He could have said something along the lines of, "I haven't seen the replay yet, but I felt he took a run at me, so I reacted. I'll have to take a look and see what really happened." That would have been a better way to go. And I'm sure they put the replay up on the scoreboard. Players look up there quite often to see what transpired. He may have seen the replay and chose not to call out his defenseman for driving Perron into him.

My smartassness came as a response to someone being a smartass to me. So I was just playing along. And you're wrong. Yzerman was bend over pretty much at 90 degrees when Pronger hit him. All you have to do is stop the video when they collide...which I did. I don't blame Yzerman for ducking the hit at all...but don't say he didn't low bridge Pronger...because Yzerman bent over at 90 degrees and making contact with Pronger's knee when Pronger went to hit him is indeed low-bridging. He didn't meant to hurt Pronger, I'm sure...it wasn't dirty...but it is what it is. He went low on Pronger. Period.
-
Uh, I have news for you...it's not a penalty if a defensive player checks an offensive player into the defense's goalie. Yes, the offensive player needs to avoid contact, but if he cannot avoid contact due to the check, then it is not a penalty. Bad call. Perron couldn't avoid the collision at all, he was skating in front and then he was checked off balance and driven into Howard by Stuart. Damn those physics. Stuart's reaction tells you all you need to know. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RavZc_xIvz8 That doesn't look like the reaction of a defenseman who just saw his goalie get run. That's the reaction of a defenseman who just checked a guy into his own goalie and is hoping he isn't getting a penalty himself. Heck, it should have been interference on Stuart. And as far as the Yzerman/Pronger play goes...it's funny how Wings fans/media say Pronger was headhunting and "going after" Yzerman on that play. He was going to check him...what a concept eh? Yzerman did have the puck afterall...but he ducked and took out Pronger's knee. It's not hard to see why some Blues fans would say Yzerman low-bridged Pronger. It was a bang-bang play and Yzerman went low on Pronger. Obviously both sides are going to view that play differently.
-
That's the quote I'm referring to. He just sounds like an idiot because Perron didn't "run him". His own guy was the cause of the issue, not Perron. Check out a replay before you run your mouth to the press.

A goalie wrongly going after Perron, who just came back from a year out due to a concussion, and punching him numerous times while he was down on his back, was uncalled for. The Perron comeback is the talk of the town. It wasn't just a single penalty...it was a non-call on a goalie who went after our guy, who just came back from a concussion, by punching him in the head numerous times. But I can understand the situation from Howard's point of view. I disagree with him, but I get it...he felt he got ran, fine. But use your brain and look at who you are going after. Can you imagine the media coverage if Howard went after Crosby like that, punching him in the head? After he came back from his concussion? They'd be all over it. HOWEVER, my main problem with Howard was his comments after the game...they were assholish...especially if he saw the replay (which he may not have at the time...if not, he needs to look at it before running his mouth to the press). Perron was not at fault at all. I had no problem with Miller going after Tootoo...he's a POS and Miller has every right to feel Tootoo did it on purpoase, that's who Tootoo is. HOWEVER, it looked to me like Tootoo tried to jump over Miller but failed. I don't think he was headhunting...but that doesn't mean it wasn't a reckless/careless play. Miller was in the right. Howard wasn't.

Overall, I like it a lot. The stars are back in a division with the Blues, Wings and Hawks...just like the Norris days. I'm happy Detroit didn't go to the East (sorry)...I like the games between the Blues and Wings. It's fun to hate you guys. And we owe you big time...you can't run to the east before we get some revenge for over a decade of dominance. For those who don't like the playoffs the way they will be next year, you're nuts. It's far better than seeding 1-8 in the conference. The playoff format is the way it should be now. 1st vs. 4th, 2nd vs. 3rd in each division and then the winners play each other in round 2. That's the way it used to be, and it was much better. Rivalries are heightened and more intense when you face similar teams in the playoffs more often, and you are guaranteed to face a division team in the first two rounds. Awesome. I don't care about Winnipeg being in the division...but oh well. And the Wild always bored me...but we'll see how it goes. It would have been nice to have 7 teams in the division and not 8. Other than that, I love it.

Horribly, horribly reffed game...again. Bad calls and bad non-calls on both teams. Not sure how Perron got a Penalty for making contact with Howard when he was blatantly checked into him. Perron wasn't even on line to make contact until he was checked off course and into Howard...and I'm not sure why Howard got nothing for attacking Perron. That was a joke. That's kind of the talk of St. Louis sports radio and message boards right now. Howards's comments after the game make him sound like an idiot...sorry. He needs to look at the replay. Besides, like Perron is going to "take a run" at Howard after being out over a full calendar year with a concussion? Uh, no...and then for Howard to jump on top of him and start wailing away?? Please...that's bush league. Honestly , I've never liked Howard. Sure, part of it is because he is a Wing and the Wings are hated rivals in St. Louis...but in some of the games I've seen him play he has just come off as an ass. Just my observation...and maybe it's just the games I've seen. Of course, I'm sure I'd love that in a goalie on my own team, but when it's the opposition, it pisses me off. Just one of those things I guess.

If Elliot and Halak both continue to play well, both will continue to get regular starts...which is what is going on now. Elliot played last game and Halak is playing tonight against the Caps.
-
I'm not going to concede that the Wings "have a much better team". We did win the only matchup so far this year, and we're only 1 pt. behind Detroit in the standings. Both teams have also grabbed 16 pts. over their last 10 games. Hitchcock may have been the missing piece to the puzzle in St. Louis. This team was supposed to have been really good last year, but fell short. Hopefully this pace (or something close to it) continues. Halak just got off to a really bad start this year. He has played much better over his last 6 games. Elliot has been lights out all year. And had he played the bulk of the games to start the year (not sure why he would though as he came into the season as the backup, even though Halak looked really bad in preseason as well and Elliot was very good), the Blues would probably be in 1st overall...not even close. Halak cost us three or four games to start the season that we should have easily won...he was pretty bad.
-
Right now...I'd vote for Elliot. Right now he's the strongest candidate. Is that a homer vote? Nope...not really. Numbers don't lie. He has the best numbers in the NHL right now...leading in GAA, Save%, shutouts and only 3 wins behind Howard in 7 less games played.

It was 6 power plays to 3 for the game. And like I said...it wasn't just the penalty discrepancy. It had everything to do with non-calls against the Wings, followed up by a call against the Blues in the 3rd period in a one goal game. It's not just me dude. The fans at the game, the Blues bench, the play by play guys, comments on the nightly news sportscast, etc. It's crazy how you didn't see it. No, you're wrong. Read my post above...I mentioned it. Obviously the Wings got screwed on that. But it doesn't make up for the trainwreck of a reffing job that went on in the previous 15+ minutes. Um, because I am a Blues fan and this is a Blues-Red Wings GDT...? Just a thought. Just talking hockey.
-
I don't think there was anything undertoned about my post. I think I was quite clear and upfront about what I meant. Should I clarify for you? And don't bring up Homer getting jobbed. I can't tell you the number of times I have seen him bump/obstruct the goalie and gotten away with it. I'm sure there are goals called off that should have counted, but that's his own fault for being on top of the goalie and bumping him often. He has a reputation. Live by the sword and die by it. He's gotten away with a lot...I'm sure it pretty well evens out. Uh, yeah...that's why I said it. Most of the time I hate it when people say the refs are biased...and I'm not saying the refs were biased by any means..I'm sure they aren't, but if someone where to point to the 3rd period of that game and say the refs were biased against the Blues, they'd have people wondering if they actually are biased. MY POINT IS, THE REFFING WAS BAD AGAINST ONE TEAM NUMEROUS TIMES LATE IN A ONE GOAL GAME, HENCE THE FOCUS ON IT. That's what my long winded answer is trying to say. Again, you aren't getting it. I don't think the league is trying to help the Wings win. It just seemed that way in the 3rd period of that game. Huge difference. And like I said...I'd have been way more upset had the Wings tied it on one of their late power plays.
-
I thought he'd get 2-3, which is consistent with previous Shanabans. And it wasn't "dirty". There was no intent to injure. Did you watch the Shanahan explanation and breakdown of the hit?
-
Whoops...my mistake. Was looking at the wrong username. With that said... So using that argument of possible favoritism is moot in this case because Shanny has played for both teams involved.
-
Wasn't talking to you my friend. Was talking to someone else who seemingly forgot.
-
Thanks for your input... but that has nothing to do with what I was talking about.
-
Shanahan played for St. Louis too.

I don't want to come off as petty, because the Blues did win the game...but that fact aside... I didn't have a huge problem with most of the calls against the Blues. But some of them were ticky-tack-barely-a-penalty calls...like the supposed hook on Arnott that was really just a stick lift. That was lame. My main gripe is with all of the penalties that weren't called on Detroit...and it was more than just the no-call on the trip. Just in the 3rd period alone... - There was the no-call on the trip when everyone stopped skating, thinking it was a penalty. - There were at least two blatant interference no-calls that I remember...one where Howard badly interfered with...someone...I forgot who around the net. - There was the horrible icing call late in the game. - There was a hook on Oshie (I think it was Oshie) that negated a scoring chance. And I feel like I'm forgetting another one...anyway... The fans were pissed...the Blues bench was livid...the announcers were wondering what was going on...mainly because when they are calling the Blues for pretty much everything, and not calling anything on Detroit, especially on what seemed to be blatant penalties. That's where the issue is as far as I am concerned. Call it the same for both teams..or at least close to the same. It was most certainly NOT an evenly called game last night. I'd be a lot more annoyed today if we had lost and the penalties went down the same way. And I know this isn't the case, but it was like the refs were trying to give Detroit every opportunity to come back and tie the game. I hate it when people talk like that, but damnit if it didn't seem like that last night. And it wasn't just bad calls against St. Louis. Detroit got hosed when Steen stepped on the puck with a few minutes to go. In short...horribly reffed game. One of the worst I've seen in some time. I'm just glad the Blues were able to overcome the reffing and pull out the 2-1 win in a very exciting game.
-
Hey guys, what's going on in here? That was one of the worst reffed games I've seen in quite a while. Wings seemed to get all the calls, especially in the 3rd period, Blues only caught a break with 4 minutes to go on another bad call when Steen stepped on the puck and the Blues got a PP. Not that I am complaining about the outcome, but during the game it was frustrating to watch. At one point is was something like 15 minutes of PP time to 12 seconds...when it should have been much more even. Crazy. Exciting game from our end. Goaltending was excellent at both ends...which was to be expected with the numbers both guys have put up so far this year. Glad to see Kronwall is ok. I think Stewart was expecting more of a reverse check from Kronwall and tried to counter it, but ended up launching him into the boards instead. His proximity to the boards was at the right (or wrong) distance to make it very dangerous. I don't think it was a dirty hit...just an unfortunate hit...and very scary. I don't think Stewart meant for it to turn out that way. I won't be surprised if he is suspended a couple games for it though.
-
8 games? Nah. How is that "true to form" for Shanahan? Here is a list of this year's Shanabans (reg. season games) for boarding: Carcillo - Boarding - 2 games Letang - Boarding - 2 games Sestito - Boarding - 4 games Staubitz - Boarding - 3 games Shelley - Boarding - 5 games Letourneau-Leblond - Boarding - 1 game Shanahan has dished out much more severe suspensions for illegal hits to the head. Now, with that said...I figure Stewart will get suspended, but I can't imagine it will be for 8 games. I'm going to say 2 or 3 games.

Hey guys... We had Mike and Tony from the Lets Go Wings podcast on our St. Louis Blues Radio podcast show last night to talk about the game tonight and other things. It just went live...here is a link to the show (episode #9) if you want to check it out: http://www.stlbluesradio.com

I, like most Blues fans, was leery of the move at first. I thought Payne wasn't given enough time to do his thing...only one full season. I liked Payne...but he hadn't gotten over the hump yet. Hitchcock is a winner...and the Blues have underachieved the past couple years and haven't been great out of the gate this year. The Blues GM was quoted as saying the team won't have any excuses now. After hearing Hitchcock in some interviews, hearing Hull talk about how good of a coach we just got, and hearing other former players talk about how this Blues team will definitely be prepared to play every night, etc...I like the move more and more. He said he understands the game has changed since he won a cup...he's learned a lot from his time in Columbus and time off since. He's scouted, watched and analyzed every team in the NHL since leaving Columbus' head coaching job and understands his game needs to be played at more at both ends of the ice instead of a defensive-heavy scheme. Maybe it's just a matter of "saying the right things" when hired...but it was good to hear nonetheless. He was asked about how long it will take to fix the Blues (then last in the NHL with only 3 goals on the PP) power play...and he said, "Oh, we'll have that fixed in one practice." And sure enough...the first PP against the Hawks last night, and we score a nice goal...and go 50% on the PP for the night. Hilarious...gotta love that. The talent is supposed to be here. This is supposed to be a good playoff team this year. Hopefully Hitchcock can get them on track with a more consistently solid game.
