If Gratton and Ryder weren't traded at all, what makes you think they would have been availible if the Wings has made an offer?
-
Just because the Wings have the cap space doesn't mean they should've spent it on the crap availible on the free agent market last summer.
-
Cause everybody knows that the Cup is handed out in febuary.................
-
Wait, so the Stanley Cup is now awarded to whatever team makes the most deadline deals?
-
Moreau...............eh, good player, but this team has enough 3rd liners. Staios would be nice, but his contract is too big for what he brings to the table.
-
I can't see Hossa taking a paycut. I'm sure he wants to win, but he's 29, he's got several more years to make that mooney until its Stanley Cup or bust.
-
If I remember correctly, until last year's WCF, Burke was pretty popular around here for the gritty roster he put togheter.
-
Exactly. Everybody doing the numbers for this are using best case numbers. Holland won't make this deal because it is unfeasible under worst case numbers. Remember when Luongo wanted to leave Florida and take a discount to play for a contender, and because of that he's playing for peanuts in Detroit like everyone on this board said he would............oh wait he playing for some good money on a mediocre Vancouver team. Same situation folks.
-
I don't see Holland dealing for someone who he'd have to sign to an expensive contract. Since the lockout, Holland has shown that he is loathe to give out large long-term deals to players and is set on limiting them to players he feels will be the core of the team (Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Rafalski, Kronwall, etc.). I don't see him giving out a long term contract to Hossa given that Cleary will get a raise this summer, and Zetterberg will get a large, long-term deal next year.

If you picked based on who'd earned it, you'd have to pick Downey. He made the team in training camp and has protected his spot all year. McCarty hasn't earned anything yet, the only reason he was given a shot was for being a solid player for the Wings several years ago.
-
Of course its always possible that they could trade him to a team that is not Detroit.
-
Not even remotely possible.
-
He's not a top pairing guy, he's average defensively, and is incredibly inconsistent.
-
Federov would be a solid addition, but its insane to think he's worth a first rounder and/or a top prospect at this point in his career. Anymore than some mid-range picks and solid (but not bluechip) prospect is too much.
-
Like who? Who should Holland have overpaid in the offseason?
-
Why does everybody think that McCarty is automatically deserving of an NHL spot and will drastically improve the Wings? Until he proves himself at the NHL level, there is no reason for him to take the spot of Downey, or even Drake.

Who would you take, solid 2nd liner, or Dman.

I'm not a numbers guy, but I'll take your word that he'll fit under the cap. My problem is that Kubina is purely depth, he's not a defenseman that the Wings need longterm. We can get defensive depth for less than that. Having this contract anchoring them down could hurt the Wings ability to get players that they need more than Kubina. -

I just don't see Kubina as being a good long term fit for the Wings. The Wings can use some defensive depth, but with the players they already have under contract, plus the defensive prospects they have, I just don't see the point of adding a $5 million dollar depth defenseman like Kubina. Especiall if Cleary gets a big raise this summer and Zetterberg gets one next summer. -

Kubina would be a great depth addition if he was a UFA at the end of this year, but since he has long-term contract, it would be a horrible addition. The Wings already have a large amount of money tied up in 3 defenseman. Kubina is paid like a first pairing defenseman, but he would never make the first pairing in Detroit. -
If Federov comes back to Detroit, it won't be this season. Columbus is establishing themselves as a legimate team this season. If they trade Federov, they won't trade him to a division opponent and they'll want a legitimate player who can help out immediately.

I'd rather the Wings trade for a cheap rental, than trading for someone with a large contract that will hurt them later (players like Kubina and Tucker). -
Whats the point? We would be trading a solid 2nd line winger and a draft pick for a lesser (at least this year) 2nd line winger. Right now, this year, Samuellson is a better player than Ryder. This move just weakens the team for the playoffs. It could possibly be a good long term move, as Ryder has more potential, but Ryder is a UFA after this year. If he steps up his game, he'll probably get a good contract from another team, and if he doesn't, than he won't be back anyways.
-
Depth players and draft picks aren't gonna get you players like Blake and Federov, no matter how over the hill they may be.
-
The game would end 0-0, and it would take almost twenty minutes for some of these guys to even skate across the rink.

Never underestimate the idiocy of NHL GMs. Somebody will pay that price.
