I don't believe anybody here has been saying they want Lang on the team till he's 40. Lang and a prospect for Souray is just a plain bad trade. I'd be willing to get rid of Lang for a useful player and some salary relief, but Lang AND a prospect for someone like Sheldon Souray is gross overpayment. Lang isn't very physical and has a big contract, but he produces, especially when it matters. You don't trade a player like that and a prospect for a defenseman that we can watch get beaten by opposing forwards whenever they come in our zone for the next year.

Lang and a prospect for Souray? ugh.

Biron a Red Wing this weekend. Not that great of a source, so take it for what it's worth.
-
Chelios could play a few more years as a very effective third pairing guy. Scheinder will probably be gone unless he takes a smaller contract. I don't know if Lidstrom would want to play beyond his current contract, but he certainly has the ability to play into his 40's. And remember, since he's currently 25, Kronwall's isn't gonna be a spring chicken when the rest of our current guys retire.
-
By the time those guys retire, we'll have Kindl and Quincy in the lineup. Kronwall is an older prospect at 25, but he's only played 47 games and has had two long term injuries. Kronwall will be a good second pairing defenseman, but he won't be a team cornerstone, and honestly, I think Kindl might end up being the better defenseman.
-
Kronwall has been the Wings number 1 prospect for that long because the lockout and his injuries have kept him from being a fulltime member of the Wings.
-
Obviously getting Kronwall would help them, but Buffallo has no need for Lang since they already have Briere and Drury.
-
Good trade from the Wings perspective, but it doesn't help Buffalo that much.

I'm sure teams offered mid-level picks for Witt, cause frankly, thats what he's worth. But like I said, McPhee stated that he wanted top picks/prospects for Witt, he didn't want mid-level picks. Heck, i was suprised it only took nashville a 1st and a bust prospect to get Witt, because there was talk before the olympics that nashville offered up a 1st rounder and two solid prospects for Witt.
-
What you're saying makes complete sense until you get to the part where the you felt the Wings waited to the trade deadline. If all it took was a Williams caliber player and a third rounder to get Witt, Witt would of been traded months ago. There's no way a trade like that would've happened. McPhee had made it known that he wanted top return for Witt. And obviously he was going to wait till the trade deadline to trade Witt to make sure he got top return. Nashville's coveted Witt all year, so obviously they McPhee was gonna try to get as much as he could out of them once the Wings, Kings, and Nucks got involved to drive up the price.

I'm not a big fan of cross, but i won't blame holland. judging by the ways things went down, i would guess that holland felt he had made a trade to get witt, so he dumped rivers, but then nashville upped the ante at the last minute to acquire witt. so holland was probably forced to make a trade for cross to replace rivers.

I believe Havlat is on IR, which means he can't be traded

I believe the olympic trade freeze came into effect at 3, so nothings going to happen till the end of the month.

Like I said, the Wings aren't going for a youth movement this year. They clearly showed that by bringing back Stevie and Chelly and keeping guys like Shanny and Lang. If Stumpy is playing for the Wings it is not like he is taking a roster spot from some top prospect. Most likely that spot would have gone to some other fourth liner or minor leaguer.
-
What's up with all the negativity around Stumpy. He's a good player. I think it's pretty obvious management wasn't going to go for a youth movement this year. Having a guy who could score around 15 goals for about minimum salary is better than putting in some kid who isn't ready and can't contribute.

There is no way Detroit could, would, or should try to out bid the Rangers for a lazy fourth liner.
