I'm not saying equipment doesn't play a role, but it's ignorant to say that the techniques used in the past goaltending years could stand a chance to today's goaltending techniques. The only thing you can really shrink would be the length of the pads by a couple of inches and certain parts of the C/A.
-
Agreed, it's not the players' fault that goalies actually evolved and go to camps to learn what save to use for what occasion, work on a perfect butterfly and stance, etc.
-
Goalies back then: Goalies now: Butterfly saves > the idea that it's mostly the gear.
-
I can't defend Snow, even we in the goalie community consider him a bum.

Laugh out loud at 90% of the posts in this topic, espcially the ones aimed at Giguere. You can't shrink the goalie equipment much more without sacrificing safety, especially the chest protectors. For those of you who don't play goal (I'm looking at most of you), a shot can still hurt with a C/A on, granted it's not a "OMG I'M GOING TO DIE" pain, but you still feel a 80-100 mph shot. The only new rule the NHL needs to implement should be a rule that makes the gear you wear be appropriate to your body. Manny Legace doesn't need to wear pads the same size as Olaf Kolzig. Everyone gives Giguere s*** for his gear, when Manny Legace is probably the biggest "cheater" in the league, granted he's doing it legally.

I don't think it will have same effect when half of it will be in broken English.
-
Damnit, Ozzy is starting. I guess that means Jimmy will probably play.
-
This is one of the few times I'll disagree with Hasek.
-
That is a Warwick Hasek helmet, not a Cooper SK2000 which Ozzy seems to prefer. Painting a Cooper SK2000 isn't impossible, but it's not very easy nor durable in a NHL game.

Glad to see some people agreeing with me. I swear, I was being burned on a cross being called a heretic when the game first ended.

The NHL is inspecting every pieces of equipment, so there's no illegal gear in the NHL, not even the c/a. Remember what happened with DiPietro's all white pads? he had to changed them during the game. Not that they were illegal, but they haven't got through inspection. They were inspected and ruled legal, but still, it shows you how much the NHL are serious about gear legality. So I hope there will be no more "Can't believe it's legal" or "I'm sure it's not legal". BECAUSE ALL NHL GEAR WORN IN THE NHL IS LEGAL AND INSPECTED! You can't even mod your gear yourself without sending it back to inspection. Case closed. Also, if a c/a fits a RBK edge jersey..... IT HAS TO BE LEGAL. Not to mention the size of the font of the Ducks logo makes the c/a look even bigger. His stance does have an effect, too. He presents more of the tops of his shoulders than a lot of goalies, who get compact while keeping the back more upright. If you look at most goalies their head is above their shoulders (unless they are trying to get low to look through traffic or something) but Giggy's normal stance seems to be, as other goalies I play with have put it, vulture like or almost hunched over which also requires your shoulders to be pretty much spread out as wide as they go.

Wow, I was wondering what was missing. A "Giguere must have illegal gear" joke.
-
I bet this was what the Av's forums were saying when Dom flopped on that disallowed goal.
-
If we're gonna talk about the refs, lets atleast mention the "tripping" call on that Duck at the end to give us the PP in the first place.

Babcock throws red flag Babcock: Oops, I missed.

Agreed, but it's not great being called a douchenozzle and a *** for not being a homer. Just to make it clear, not a Ducks fan, but I am a Giggy fan.
-
Comparing a 2008 goaltender to a 1997 goaltender is like comparing a XBOX 360 to a Nintendo 64. With goalie camps these days, a goalie like Giggy is gonna see that shot. If that were the case, then Homer would be out of a job.
-
I'm saying how do you know Giggy would of been moving to the left if he could see the shot clearly? A goalie like Giguere doesn't make unnecessary lateral movements, it's all about being square to the shot for him. If you watch Giggy, he is horrible at moving laterally when he's in a butterfly. He wouldn't of committed so much had he not been Homer-screened.
-
Thats a bit ignorant to say, no offense. A starting goaltender of Giguere's caliber would of seen the shot if not for Homer parked right infront of him doing his job.
-
Agreed, but I think a lot of it has to do with Giggy being so aggressive in his crease, to the point where he put himself in a position to make contact with Homer.
-
Right when contact is made. Also note Homer's ass making contact with Giguere. Light on contact, heavy on game deciding.
-
Also remember, Homer's ass was in the crease quite a bit. I don't know if thats covered in the rule book.
-
Don't quote me on it, but I believe they got rid of that conveniently after this. I'm pretty sure you can have your skates in the crease as ong as you don't interfere with the goalie. If you and the goalie make contact, it's considered goaltender interference, and the play is either called dead or a penalty is called. If you and the goalie make contact, but you're outside the crease (Which Homer wasn't, but only by half a foot) then it's ok, because the goalie is outside his crease.
