  1. Bad call on Backes. But you know what? f*** Backes. He looked like he was trying to kill Huskins. The call may have been all kings of incompetent, but it's not like Backes was innocent. In fact, Backes, IMO is a prick.

    /rant

Please. Tootoo did the same kind of legal hockey check to Polak. If you watch a pass and don't brace for contact there is an increased chance to get hurt. There was nothing wrong with either hit. It's part of the game.

  2. Where do Detroit fans recommend hanging out before and after games? I've been to the Hockeytown Cafe and the Post bar in prior visits and have been recommended to do Nemo's by some fellow blues fans. This will be a NYE Saturday night and I'm sure some bars will have certain pricey covers and be packed.

Where's your to-go bar for pre- and post-games?

    Nemo's?

    Hockey town?

    The Post Bar?

    Other bars?

Is it true players sometimes frequent the Post bar?

  3. I don't see any evidence that Stuart forced Perron into Howard. A nudge doesn't result in what Perron did. It was far worse than Abdelkader accidentally hitting Elliott in the head with an errant elbow and Elliott flopping like he got shot. I also noted Oshie was diving all night as well. The Blues looked a lot like the last two playoff series against the Sharks. The refs seemed to catch everything except the Blues diving and the interference in their own zone.

Nice "Red Wings suck" chant though while your rafters are empty.

Rafters were not empty. Last non-sellout in St. Louis was in 2009. 54 consecutive sellouts despite missing playoffs last season.

The video speaks for itself. Perron is clearly pushed into his direction at the side of the crease. Often times an opposing player makes contact as a result of a push toward the goalie by goalie's teammate. It is a quick game and if the ref realizes it a penalty is not called.

    Article:

According the Blues, Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard got away with throwing a few punches at David Perron Tuesday night.

With 2:43 left in the third period of the Blues' 3-2 win over the Red Wings, a game that was 3-1 at the time, Perron was pushed into Howard by Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart. Howard angrily jumped to his feet and went after Perron, eventually landing on top of him and tossing some jabs.

"I'm not taking that," Howard said after the game. "I don't care who it is. If you're going to run me like that or try to go through me like that, you're going to pay the price."

Perron was penalized for goaltender interference despite being pushed by Stuart. Afterwards, Stuart said that he didn't believe Perron did anything wrong.

"He couldn't stop himself from going into him," Stuart said. "It wasn't a real harmful collision, I didn't feel. He certainly didn't try to get out of the way, which you don't like to see. But I didn't feel like he ran in with a whole lot of force."

After today's practice, Perron desribed the play from his perspective.

"It's a quick play, bang-bang, and I tipped it on goal," Perron said. "(Howard) slides across. I think at least half of his body was outside the crease. I'm trying to avoid him but (Stuart) pushed me into him. I understand the goalies want to have that security in the net, not to get hit, but when you get pushed in, it's tough to avoid contact."

Perron was playing only his second game back after 10 1/2 months off with a concussion, and like fans who winced when Howard was throwing punches, so was No. 57.

"I was just trying to protect myself because obviously I didn't want to get one in the head or something," Perron said.

That drew more players over, but there were no fights. When the dust settled, Perron skated to the penalty box with the lone penalty. He couldn't believe that Howard was penalized.

"To be honest, I'm surprised he didn't get an extra penalty for that," Perron said. "Because their d-man pushed me in, and then he jumps on me. At the end of the game, it should at least be even. It's tough because they scored a big goal. If it's only 2-1 for us, and they tie it up, then we have to fight back from a call like that. But in the end, we move on."

At the other end of the ice, Blues goalie Brian Elliott said he watched the situation in amazement. Earlier in the period, Elliott was knocked in the head by Detroit's Justin Abdelkader, who received a charging penalty.

"Howard jumps on and doesn't get a penalty for it?" Elliott said. "I asked the ref on the ice if I could do the same thing if I got hit again. I don't know ... that's why I think you need to keep fighting in the game because you almost need to police yourself out there."

I'll have more on the hot topic of goaltender interference in tomorrow's newspaper.

  4. That game was pure garbage in every way. Hockey should be entertaining and I don't find watching two jackasses call nonstop penalties for 60 minutes remotely enjoyable. It's been six years since the lockout and still no one knows what a penalty is in this league on a nightly basis. There's no consistency whatsoever. 16 combined powerplays and over half the game being played on specialty teams is a joke.

The Blues are a disgrace, just like the Sharks. Elliott had one of the most blatant flops ever and somehow still gets a penalty call in his favor. Oshie was diving like Setoguchi and the Blues got away with interference in their own zone all night. I hate the re-alignment even more now having to watch these boring teams that trap like the Blues, Wild and Predators all of the time. I wish someone on the Wings would clock Jackman -- tonight was the perfect chance since they spent every shift killing penalties regardless.

Ericsson gets paid a lot of money to not play defense. That contract is working out nicely. I don't even hate the guy all that much, but he was directly responsible for two goals being out of position. Bring Smith back up and play him with Kronwall if Ericsson isn't even going to be reliable defensively.

I love Z to death, but damn he's gotta start scoring some goals. He's looked strong lately and generated chances, but we need more than just Franzen and Datsyuk putting the puck in the net with Filppula out.

Elliott embellished there. I saw Hasek do a lot of embellishments. Were the wings a disgrace then? Howie also overreacted to the collision afterwards. Perron was nudged by Stuart and he may have avoided contact with Howie otherwise. He landed on him to the side of the net. Howie immediately went after him and Howie did not get a roughing call for retaliation after Perron made contact with him following Stuart's nudge of Perron, which resulted in a pp and ppg. It works both ways.

  5. Gag. It's great to see the team do well, as it has some great young talent, and John Davidson is a great guy and a class act.

I could never congratulate their "fans," however. Having lived in St. Louis for a while, I can say with firsthand experience that Blues fans are the biggest idiots you'll find in any NHL city. Half of them couldn't care less about their team winning hockey games, let alone a Stanley Cup. As long as the Blues goon it up and send other teams' players off the ice on stretchers, they're happy. (No coincidence that BS like WWF "Smackdowns" always draw sell-out crowds in St. Louis.) Slugs like Reed Low are worshipped down there like gods, simply because they sport 1:1 shift-to-fighting major ratios (never mind that Low could barely skate, let alone shoot or score). The other half of their fans do nothing but whine about how the Blues never get enough attention from the media or "respect" from fans of other teams -- despite the obvious (to the rest of the world) fact that the franchise has never accomplished a damn thing in its entire history.

Ridiculous description. So Blues fans are the biggest idiots in any NHL city. 50% don't care about Blues winning just want to watch fights and worship Red Low. The other 50% just whine about media coverage. Just a ridiculous description of a fan base from an opposing team's fan.

You're right, the Blues haven't ever won a cup. That hasn't kept the fans from remaining loyal and passionate. St. Louis was in top 5 in TV viewership for both Winter Classics. A Tampa Bay fan went on a tour of 30 NHL rinks in 30 days and said the Blues had the best fans. Emphasized how great the atmosphere and that they really loved their team.

  6. The Blues look to extend their lead in the Central Division tonight.

Conklin in for Detroit, Zetterberg doubtful.

Stempniak and Berglund expected to return to the lineup for St. Louis.

    Preview:

The Detroit Red Wings have won the Central Division title seven consecutive times, but the defending Stanley Cup champions find themselves in a position they're unaccustomed to.

Looking to extend their surprising lead in the Central, the St. Louis Blues welcome Detroit to the Scottrade Center on Wednesday night.

The Blues (4-1-0) have finished last in the division in two of the last three seasons, but own a one-point lead over the Red Wings coming into this contest.

St. Louis rallied for a 4-3 shootout victory on Saturday over Chicago. The Blues trailed by two with 17 minutes remaining, but Keith Tkachuk got his sixth goal of the season and Andy McDonald scored his first goal of the season with 13.9 seconds left to tie the game.

In the shootout, rookie T.J. Oshie tallied the game-winner.

"We just stuck to it," said McDonald, who scored his first goal of the season. "We had a lot of guys creating offense. We had a lot of chances. It's just a matter of time for the puck to find its way in."

Tkachuk extended his goal-scoring streak to five games. With his team-high eighth assist, Paul Kariya now has points in all five games this season.

Manny Legace also improved to 4-0-0 by stopping 23 shots and allowing just one goal in the Blackhawks' four shootout attempts. Legace has won five straight games for the first time since the 2005-06 season when he had eight consecutive victories while playing for the Red Wings.

"I give a lot of credit to the boys." Legace said. "They never gave up."

Detroit (3-1-1) also rallied in the third period in its last game and earned its first home win of the season, 5-4 in overtime over the New York Rangers on Saturday. Marian Hossa, signed away from Cup runner-up Pittsburgh in the off-season, scored his first goal for his new team and the 300th of his NHL career 23 seconds into the extra period.

"I knew I was getting chances. I tried to stay calm on the ice, and off, too. there was no panic," said Hossa, who also had an assist. "I knew the goals would come, and tonight I got the first one. Hopefully, now we can roll."

Tomas Holmstrom also scored in his third straight game by recording his fifth goal of the season, and Mikael Samuelsson added his first goal and two assists. Chris Osgood improved to 2-1-1 by stopping 28 shots.

The two teams are among the league's best on special teams. Red Wings have scored a power-play goal in three straight games, and they have killed off 13 consecutive penalties. Detroit has scored six times in 22 power-play opportunities and killed off 15 of 17 penalties.

The Blues have allowed opponents to score two power-play goals in 20 chances, and, despite getting shut out Saturday for the first time this season on the power play, St. Louis has converted on nine of its 22 chances.

Conn Smythe trophy winner Henrik Zetterberg could return to Detroit's lineup after sitting out the last two games with a strained groin. Last season, Zetterberg led the Red Wings with 43 goals and 92 points. He had a goal and an assist in the team's first three games.

The Red Wings beat the Blues 4-3-1 in last season's series.

  7. Looks like the Wings have taken advantage this season of beating up on weak opponents. Only this time the weak opponents consist of the Pacific, Northwest, Southeast, and Northeast divisions. I guess those ******* idiot blues fans are going to come to this forum tomorrow to tell us about how great and dominant their team is. That's the worst part about losing to them.

Why are they fuking idiot blues fans? Because we root for a different team? How dare us?

I'm sure you woudn't call Wings fans similar stuff had they won. Even though so many of those frontrunners couldn't spelll Fedorov's name corrrectly for years.

  8. I had two friends drive from STL to KC for the game tonight and we are delerious. We were doing a big group hug after EJ scored and again after the empty net goal.

Thrilling, and a great way to end the year.

First shutout of Wings since Guy Hebert, Jan 11, 1993. 12 days later Cujo beat up Cheveldae and Blues beat wings at the Arena.

Cab is on the way for a crazy night of celebration for the year, and the win, and champagne.

Looking forward to the next game. You guys have a great, great team over there. Depth offensively, OSgood suprisingly good, and Lidstrom still kicking ass. He is right there with Zubov. Have a great new years, and go hockey.

    Go Blues!

  10. Ah, a rational Blues fan to discuss the game with. Nice to see you're not crying cheap shot about the hit 'Stein put on Jackman. Can't say I wished any injury on him, but maybe now he won't take shots at Hudler and Datsyuk knowing they don't fight. Speaking of fight, what are your thoughts on the fight(if you can call it that?) that 'Stein and Walker got into? I know Walker was doing his job, but I found it a little unnecessary that the refs just let him keep punching Franzen in the back of the head.

Hope you'll be kind enough to discuss future games with us here.

I found it interesting that you can tell Oz and Manny play the same style, these pics show how much alike they are with that. Just something that struck me I guess.

    capt_224393fe486a48a58b7af6317c096d.jpg

    capt_85fc4c182a43447082cbcb3b1536d1.jpg

I liked that Walker stood up for his teammate. It was an odd fight in that Walker kind of got above him and kept punching straight down on his head. It was obviously a mismatch and I was just waiting for Franzen to fall to the ice.

Legace has changed his style a bit. He is still a butterfly goalie but he stays in the crease more so that he is always in decent position. He used to be more aggressive and come out of crease to take away the angle being that he is smaller but it often resulted in an open net with him out of position. Now he stays in crease and easier to be square to puck.

Osgood looks similar and his season has suprised me. He was decent (but never great) with the Blues and had some success in Detroit before but nothing like this. His save % is amazing right now. It's not just that he has good blueliners and is able to have a low GAA. This is as good as I have seen Osgood. Goalies seem to age like wine.

To beat Detroit, the goaltending has to be solid and Legace had an off night. He'll need to be much better Monday and steal some goals.

The Blues would be better to play four forwards on the pp too. It's not like they have a MacInnis, Pronger or Wideman to play the point on the PP. I'd rather see them use one D on Monday and throw four forwards out there against the Wings' PK.

I think it will be a close game after the embarrassment last night. I expect Legace to be much better, and the Blues to focus on 1-2-2 forecheck. It will be boring but will keep it close and slow down the wings in the neutral zone.

The last game in Detroit the Blues took 30 penalties too. That can't happen again. But I'll worry about that Monday. Blues have SJ tonight and then Dallas Saturday night in Big D. Tough stretch coming up.

  11. Glad to see you're back!

I think I had you pegged for a troll at first (or maybe was confusing you with some troll Blues fan). Sorry about that. We were saying earlier in the thread it'd be cool to have a friendly rivalry with some Blues fans here.

Yeah, after the game I drove straight from downtown STL to North KC and got in at 215 a.m. CST and went to bed for work today. First chance to comment on the game.

  12. It really is too bad that St. Louis hasn't figured out what we know in Detroit.

Former players, who become TV analysts, that become General Managers, don't always work.

Millen doesn't work for the Lions, and Davidson doesn't work for the Blues.

How does Davidson not work for the Blues?

He took a cellar team and made them into a playoff team in a pretty short amount of time, traded Weight and Tkachuk for good pics for the future, including Perron now, acquired McDonald for Weight, Boyes for Wideman, signed Kariya. Lots of good moves and lots of future still on the way, such as T.J. Oshie.

  13. Why do we have to play 2 games vs the Blues at that dump of a stadium? Why not one there and one at the Joe?

Dump? I think you have Scottrade confused with the Joe.

The Wings were on their "A" game last night even w/o some of their weapons. Forechecked like a mother and yet did a good job at backchecking to make the neutral zone a mess to get through. And they finished their chances.

The Blues didn't even compete. Much better than that. They didn't even get physical with the lightest team in the league. Legace was horrible, putting the Blues down 0-2 early.

And when the Blues did some good things, Osgood was great. McDonald missed an easy goal early too that would have made it 1-0.

Fortunately, there isn't much time to think about last night's game with San Jose tomorrow, @ Dallas Saturday and then at the Joe Monday, before the Mizzou bowl game and outdoor NHL game Tuesday. Lots of sports, no work for those four days. Should be fun.

I've gone to four games this year and they've lost all four even though they have a good home record. Next game is a road game in Toronto and the Leafs are pretty beatable. Hopefully I finally see a win.

    Clean hit on Jackman, BTW.

  14. I'll be there. Born and raised in Saint Louis, but love hockey too much to be a Blues fan. I love it when we get the "Let's go Red Wings" chant louder than the Blues fans.

It's also great when the Wings would knock the Blues out of the playoffs and they still yell "Wings suck" at you when leaving the rink. Such ignorant hatred. Put half that energy to properly building a team and they could put together a dynasty.

I love how lame the atmosphere was at the Joe the two times I went to Blues games there compared to the atmosphere at Scottrade.

I love STL and hockey and not a frontrunner so it was easy to be a Blues fan.

  15. My dad and I have tickets to the game. I've been to three home games this year and the Blues have lost each one, including last night. Hopefully, that changes against Detroit.

It stinks that the Blues-Wings games are lumped together. I'd rather have them spaced out more.

Is Homer expected to be back for this game?

    Scottrade will be rocking.

  16. It is refreshing to watch a guy like Jackman after watching Kirk Maltby. At least Jackman drops the gloves. Tough to have much credibility when you play a checking role type game, ---- disturber and do not fight regardless of the reason.

  17. Personally I think that particular statement is a little unfair.

But yeah, I agree that Ozzie is certainly not to blame tonight. And even if he was, I think he's earned it given the way he's played so far this season.

Losing to the Central blows. I really don't want to complain about the Wings play given how well the regular season has gone so far, but these garbage performances against the teams we see eight times a year really need to stop.

Holmstrom isn't allowed to give opposing goaltenders so much as a sideways glance without going to the penalty box. I'm not going to suggest that Detroit players never run a little interference like the Blues player did on tonight's winning goal, but Holmstrom doesn't get away with anything.

The league finally cracked down. Holmstrom is the worst.

  18. Haha. Blame the refs. Calls went against the Blues at first, and then make-up calls.

Perron high sticked in first, Kariya held badly no call, Jackman crosschecked during wings pp and Tkachuk tripped up in third too. All that, and finally some breaks with the non-interference call and brewes crosscheck. Can u imagine if Wings got pps on that after those 4 non calls on wings? damn.

Blues came out physical and did more than their typical 2-2-1. They were skating fast with 2nd forechecker pouncing in when he had to and right on wings. So many battles won tonight, both loose pucks, and open pucks on boards.

I was frustrated after McClement missed easy goal . Blues went 6 games with having lead in 5 of those games and never getting two-goal lead. Tonight, they didn't get the two-lead lead, but were able to hold on for a win. Very frustrating at first to blow 2-goal lead opportunity, but glad Blues beat those guys from Detroit again.

I laughed at Babcock, and why?? Well, because Backes did exactly what Holmstrom has done for years. Holmstrom was in the crease again and again bumping goalies for years, and tonight Backes got away with it just as Holmstrom has so many times. That was awesome. :) Blues win.
