Filppula either centers the third line or he tags along on a line with an elite center (Datsyuk, Zetterberg) and a winger that has proven he can pot 25-30 goals (Hossa, Franzen, Homer). You don't give a player who has proved nothing more offensively other than that he can get the bulk of his goals off the rush/breakaway in a defensive role the responsibility of centering elite goal scoring talents.

I'm wary of the Wings signing Flip to a long-term contract. He could be just as much a bust offensively (topping out as a 45-50 pt guy) as he could be a boom. As long as its a typical "underpaying on the long-term" contract, then I'll be fine with it.

If we lose in the Finals, is '08-'09 season a failure?
YoungGuns1340 replied to SFwingsfan's topic in General
I'll consider it a failure if we don't win the presidents trophy. Theres no reason this team shouldnt steamroll through the regular season. Best top 4. Best Top 3. Best system coached by a Top 3 coach. -
Nolan may be a good coach, but if you can't get a group of guys that can fit into a coaches preferred style of play, and the coach isnt willing to explore new styles, a change can be a good move. Doesn't mean they want a better coach than Nolan. Just a different coach. Look what happened with Babcock in the playoffs in 06 versus 07. Same coach, but with some sizeable (ego-wise at least) changes to his roster, the team performed much better when it counted, becuase they better suited Babs' coaching style..

Not really.

Hes a scout for the Wings. Hes in good hands.
-
Haha yup I did too. Of the 3 the OP listed, I'd choose Toews as well.

Why do you keep on pulling this random 2.5M number out of your ass, eva? Draper has never in his career pulled in 2.5M
-
Any idea on how much he'll make? Hes a 25 year old with nearly identical stats to Filppula's this year, and he might just be hitting his stride too. I might be thinking of someone else, but Im pretty sure Laich had a pretty impressive last few months of the season.. If the Wings do get to arbitration with Flip, he'd likely be used as for comparable assessments.
-
I'd take this teams chemistry and efficiency in a heartbeat over 2002. I have never seen a Red Wings team that boasted so much defensive responsibility and not a single face doesn't fit into the system. Every piece to this puzzle works.

DRAPER DOES NOT MAKE 2.5 MILLION!! 17 points @ 1.583 mil = 93,000/pt
-
Kris Draper is making 1.5M

I think this is hilarious. Good job on JD.

Im not sure what youre talking about here. Where does NHLscap list them?
-
Its definitely out of circulation if thats what you're asking..

Haha looks like we posted pretty much the exact same thing. At any rate, Im with you. NHLnumbers is good cause its easier to view IMO, but whoever runs it does so for mostly for the purpose of a quick look at salary terms. On the other hand, the guy who runs NHLscap.com knows all kinds of random crap about the CBA..

Yes. Thats why NHLscap has it right, and NHLnumbers.com isnt. The guy who runs NHLscap.com is more or less an independent capologist.

All performance bonuses must be accounted for in the cap space starting this season.

Wrong, wrong, and wrong again. 1. Schneider doesn't need to be re-signed. He is signed. In fact, the exact opposite is going to happen with Schneider. He is going to be traded, as they are already over the cap as it is and have a self-imposed budget around the 50M mark. Their budget hit for this year so far is 56M (cap hit is 59M). They need to trade Schneider if they even want to make their budget, and that still doesnt give them room to sign Selanne, which likely means Marchant is on his way out if the Samuellis stick to their guns on the budget. They will also have to replace Schneider with someone much less offensively capable. 2. The Ducks did not fare well in the scoring deparment. They were 28th in goals scored through 82 games. That problem carried over to the playoffs. 3. The Ducks will not be making any splashes to solidify their scoring corps. They have no money now and trading Schneider and Marchant (if they can actually pawn this guy off with his cap hit) will only barely make room for Selanne and Schneiders replacement, assuming the two combine for 2.5M ( a very conservative estimate). They need to clear 6M to get down to their budget. Schneider and Marchant account for 8.1M. That leaves Anaheim with 2.1M to sign Selanne and add a Dman replacement. Considering they can no longer bloat Selannes paycheck with bonuses, he'll have to take a significant paycut (~2M) to play for the team and the Dman they sign should play for around league minimum.

Your cap numbers are wrong. The Ducks sit at 59M on the cap hit. Edit: With Morrison. 2nd Edit: The discrepancy between NHLscap.com and NHLnumbers.com is that Bobby Ryans salary + bonuses are not included on NHLnumbers.com. Ryan (with bonuses that now have to be accounted for on the cap) adds nearly 2M in cap space.

You're the GM Fix the grammar. Sorry but I couldnt resist..
-
Huh? The Ducks have the exact opposite of depth up front. They're dying for scoring depth. In fact, they NEED Morisson to put up 50-60 points. This isnt a "well take a risk for the hell of it and see if it pays off" kind of move. This is a "we've f***ed ourselves over so much with our cap space that we need to sign a questionable 2nd line center and pray to god that he can put up some respectable numbers" kind of move.
-
Agreed. I think Wellwood will end up higher though. The guy could be a 60 point player. The question with Wellwood has always been conditioning, and I could see him rectifying that problem in a way to similar to how Cleary rectified his work ethic. Sometimes all it takes is someone basically spelling it out that you're unwanted (on the TML no less) for you to change. And I think Wellwoods on the right track. The fact that he accepted his QO from the Canucks without trying to squeeze out a few more bucks makes me think hes looking to clean his reputation.
