Most outrageous, overpaid deals in recent history?
YoungGuns1340 replied to Yzerman191's topic in General
Gretzkys earliest public salary was 1.7M in 89-90. I have a hard time believing that Gretzky made over 6.5 earlier than that, and then didnt make anything close to 6.5M until nearly a decade later. -

In what sense? Economically speaking or in relation to the rest of the NHL? If you mean in the relation to the rest of the NHL, it only proves my point. If you mean in economic terms, you're also wrong. 6.5M in 1998 - when gretzky made 6.5M - that would be 8.5M in todays world. AKA the best NHL player in the history of the sport wouldn't even be the highest paid player in the NHL. And keep in mind this was pre-cap as well. Teams could spend as much as they want. -

I'm pretty sure the highest Wayne Gretzky ever got paid was 6.53M per year. When you consider that Wade Redden is making just as much...yeah I'd say its nuts. The average contract handed out so far today is probably 3-4M per season. Wayne Gretzky didnt make more than that until the 94-95 season. -
Then he should quit hockey. You play your best no matter who you play for. Its a disgusting characteristic to not give a damn about the team you are captaining.
-
Yes. Youre right. Because Naslund wouldn't accept one.
-
What happens if one of our 40 point players has an awful year? The other 6 that we have can pick up the slack... and no he wont sign a reasonable deal.
-
55 points is apparently grounds for 3.5-5M on a 3-7 year contract in this market.
-
Theres something the Habs knew/know about him that we don't. They were very reluctant to re-sign Ryder last off-season and only did so on a one year deal on purpose (they needed his offense). And this is AFTER two back to back 30 goal seasons.

Operative words: Not going to happen.
-
Yes he would. Inconsistency, floating, no grit, no hitting, no defensive game. He can score. So all he does is take away time from Hudler, Filppula, Cleary, and Franzen and he does so at well over 2-3M and most certainly on a multi-year contract.

No, it wouldnt be great.

Anyone remember that song on Sesame Street like 20-25 years ago? "One of these things is not like the other. One of these things just doesn't belong!"

Ehh...good deal for the Wings, but I dont see Sundin coming here.
-
Grier actually grew up in Mass. He was born in Detroit, though.
-
Haha. Wow. At nearly a quarter of the price.
-
Sucks for the Nucks. They can't make a big play for Huselius, Jagr, Demitra, etc cause they're waiting on Mats decision.

Holland is a great GM. You're an ignorant poster. The debate is closed. Good signing.
-
Which the other goaltender lost.
-
He had a great season. Hes getting a long-term deal.
-
Except for that whole part where there were TONS of players making over 6.7M when Datsyuk signed, and there are 2 making over 7.7 now, and after the off-season, a max of 4. Its not comparable. Players salaries don't rise parallel to the cap.

Wings out of picture for Sundin, Hossa, Rolston

No way the Wings would throw silly money at Miller like that. No reason to have a stud goaltender when you have a balanced team in all other aspects. -

First of all, you can't compare teams of the pasts to the current team. The players are people, and they all have different sensitivities. Second, you're not in the locker-room so you have no idea how nostalgic anyone was or what they were feeling. Third, Nick Lidstrom saying in the presser post Cup win that he had knew since round 1 of the playoffs that he would pass the cup of to Drake first, should the Red Wings have won it, pretty much disproves your point. -
They were out of the running once they couldn't find any takers for their junk (Glen Murray). They had less than 7M pre-July 1st. Now they must have less than 3M. This is a terrible signing by the way. 4M for 31 points.

Per TSN 4 years/ 20 M Thats just nuts..

Yeah. The only reason we're intersted in Hossa is because hes gunning for a cup. Undoubtedly it has nothing to do with that whole "All-star winger" thing... Its only a bonus that this guy wants the cup, and proved he'd play hard for it in the playoffs.
