    The 2008 Trade Deadline Thread

I had heard he didnt want to give up the pick, but he cant afford to trade for a big name and not have him be a rental. Hed have to jump through too many hoops to fit another big name on his roster, or hell have to ask Bert and Pronger to retire for half the year this time.

    The 2008 Trade Deadline Thread

Who do you see McCabe going to? Id imagine itd have to be either a good location or an up and coming organization. Going off of the folks who are interested in the likes of Campbell/Boyle/Redden, looks like San Jose, Chicago, New York, Philly. Any news of who McCabe would be interested in playing for?

If its a "list", then Anaheim's on it. And if Anaheim's on it, then Sundin might as well be a Duck now. Dont know who could compete with Edmontons 1st and Ryan or Carter/

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

At this point, I couldnt care less what happens, I just want to see the big trade that is gonna set the other trades in motion. As long as San Jose, Anaheim, or Ottawa doesnt get Hosa, then I dont really care.

Again, what does Anaheim have to offer in the form of forwards who will be able to help Atlanta immediately? Anaheim cant afford to give up forwards, and even if they could, Carter and Ryan would be the candidates. And they arent going to help out Atlanta that much this year. If they give up a Dman then, it would likely be Beauchemin. And, as I stated earlier, the only way Anaheim has the space to re-sign Hossa is if Niedermayer retires. Now lets assume Anaheim trades Beauchemin for Hossa and Niedermayer retires. They have around 49M in payroll already for next year. Thats with Niedermayer, and without Selanne and Weight. Assuming they replace Selanne and Weight from within (Carter, Ryan), and let Niedermayer go, that still has them at about 43M. Then theyd have to find TWO Dman replacements, re-sign Hiller, and re-sign Perry, ALONG WITH resigning Hossa. For s***s, lets say they land two Dmen on the cheap and Hiller as well, so it only costs them 3M (unlikely). That puts them at 46M. If Hossa wants the reported 7M, that puts them at 53M. Thats WITHOUT still having to sign Perrt, wholl likely cost over 4M easily. That puts them at 57M - 3M over the cap. The scenario would be similar if a forward were sent Atlantas way as wel. So in short, in order for Anaheim to be able to re-sign Hossa, the following would have to happen: Nidermayer retiring Selanne and Weight being replaced with youngsters Anaheim replacing Niedermayer on the cheap, possibly Beauchemin as well Hiller signing on the cheap Perry signing a reasonable contract Marchant and his ridiculous contract being traded Once again, Im calling BS on an Anaheim move for Hossa. But then again, maybe Burke will just have Bert, Schneider, and Pronger retire for half a season???

    Lightning shopping Brad Richards

Theres no verification that Anaheim is in the mix for Hossa, now that its known that itll likely be a sign and trade for whoever acquires him. Its a bulls*** rumor just like the Blake to Anaheim rumor was. There was never any substantial claims to those rumors. IMO, the reason the Ducks are in the hunt for Sundin is because they know hell either be a rental or will cost significantly less than Hossa to re-sign. The Ducks have the assets to acquire Sundin and it wont hurt too much given what they got from the Penner steal. Its the only deal of the three deals I mentioned that makes sense for both sides. And if you think about it, who would Anaheim even offer for Hossa? Atlanta wants at least a forward who can help them still make a push for the playoffs. Carter or Ryan are gonna do that? I think not. Toronto wants some future. Anaheim has that to offer.

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

I was just going to post this. If you look at Hossas playoff stats, youll notice that the years he did poorly were years when his team never made it out of the 2nd round. If you ask me, if his team didnt make it out of the 2nd round, that smells of a choke job, meaning he wasnt the only one underperforming for the Sens in the playoffs. And the Sens - a team that had the likes of Spezza, Chara, Redden (when he was better), etc - was notorious for choking for a while there (and still are to an extent).

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

Welcome aboard! EDIT: No pun intended! Another thing to remember about Flip vs Hossa is that the Wings have next to no one that is projected to be a big goal scoring winger in the system. They alreaday have two top line centers wholl soon both be locked up for the next 6-7 years.

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

IMO, itll be Quincey and Flip with a pick. If theres a Dman involved, theyll want a young guy with some NHL experience.

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

Its doubtful Anaheim is in the running to get Hossa. Montreal, San Jose, and Detroit can all afford to re-sign Hossa. Anaheim (and Ottawa) would have to move players and/or risk losing other players to offer sheets if they re-signed Hossa. Ottawa has nearly 40M tied up for next year. With an estimated cap of about 54M, that leaves 14M for Ottawa to re-sign Hossa (7M), Commodore, Kelly, and Meszaros, find a replacement for Redden (who they dont want to re-sign) and possibly re-sign Stillman. Even assuming they trade Emery, its still not enough. As for Anaheim, theyve got cap problems of their own. In order for them to have room to re-sign Hossa, theyd have to hope that Niedermayer retires, replace all of Niedermayer, Selanne and Weight from within, hope that Hiller (and particularly) Perry sign reasonable contracts, and probably trade Marchant (good luck) to booot.

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

This is my hobby! Haha, but honestly, there are definitely more productive things I SHOULD be doing.. At any rate, obviously nothing is set in stone - there are plenty of things to consider (Brunnstrom signing, Chelios retiring are some examples) - but all in all its well within reason.

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

Haha. Thats interesting. When the whole Filppula Facebook scandal was going down, I hypothesized that the reason it was posted on Filppula's facebook was because Filppula had been told Holland was in negotiations to land Hossa, with Filppula going the other way, and that the only reason the news broke on Filppula's facebook was because Detroit was in negotiations with Hossa and the deal was still in the (long) process of being worked out, as Holland and co were discussing a longterm deal with Hossa. Of course, it looks like the page was bulls*** to begin with, but if this trade does go down, I think Ill brush that dirt of my shoulder..

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

It has already been proven that under the cap we can re-sign Hossa. Next year we can re-sign Hossa and still be a good 5-6M under the cap even AFTER having re-signed everyone. Its the 09/10 season that caused some concern and BOTH Eva and myself have posted mock lineups with each players respective salaries that prove we can handle Hossa under the cap on a 5 year, 7M per year deal..

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

Exactly. And I don't want to come off as though I'm not a fan of Flip - hes a great kid with lots of potential - but does anyone really expect him to put up Hossa like numbers even when Flip is in his prime? Maybe its just me, but I cant see Flip as a 40 goal, 100 point man even in his best years..

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

I didn't say that. What you implied was that BECAUSE BABCOCK rates Filppula so highly, Filppula will not be traded. That simply isn't the case. Babcock doesn't call the shots, and while his opinion is definitely valued, its certainly not the final say. And, as I said previously, Im sure the final say is that he rates Hossa higher than Flip.

Babcock is the GM? This is news to me. I bet Babs rates Hossa higher than Filppula..

Flip, Huds, Kronner? There are a lot of idiots out there. Flip + Quincey or Kindl I would do in a heartbeat. Id prefer to hold on to Ericsson and Smith.

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

Ottawa? You really think Ottawa is going to give up the goods for a rental? They have to sign 3 Dmen and 3 forwards next year, and at most have 14M to do it. You think they can afford to re-sign Hossa to 7M a year and then attempt to re-sign Kelly, Meszaros, Commodore, possibly Stillman, and then find a replacement for Redden? If Ottawa is in the running for Hossa, its only as a rental, and theres no way Ottawa would match an offer that another team would make in order to get Hossa long term or even with that possibility. As for San Jose? They wont give up Cheechoo, as hes a 50 goal scorer only making 3M a year for the next 3 years. Even if he is having an off year, it isnt hurting the piggy bank. As for Marleau, hes making over 6M for 2 more years after having had a bad post-season and an even worse current regular season. Hes got 28 points right now - same as Flip - and only 10 of those are goals - to Flips 16. Not to mention Flip trumps Marleaus contract status big time and still has a lot of growing in terms of offense. All I kept hearing is that San Jose was offering Bernier, and that was the best theyd offer. I like Bernier, but Flip is already better offensively and what Bernier offers in size/grit, Flip offers in a mature, defensively responsible game. Not to mention, as I said earlier, Flips skill level would mesh a lot better with the likes of Kovy and Kozlov than Berniers would, and Atlanta could definitely use a budding 2nd line center - or a decent playmaking center at all. I still think San Jose has a lot to offer even if they do offer Marleau, but the more I think about it, the more it seems like a cheap, young, skilled center is exactly what Atlanta needs..

    1. Chill with the dot dot dots 2. Go back through the thread and see the posts where both myself and Eva have outlined both what our roster and payroll would look like for BOTH the next season and the following. It is doable and it still provides for a balanced roster.

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

If its true, its not just for Filppula. How many times have you read a headline that says something like "Detroit trades X player for X player" and then in the article it states how the other team also got picks/prospects, etc? When the media reports a trade, often all they know are the main components, so this might be the case.

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

All this quote means is that we aren't going to be trading a Jakub Kindl for a Brad Stuart. And who would? Key here is that hes talking about depth. Holland isnt one to show his cards if hes going for one of the bigger fish in the sea. Hollands not an idiot. He knows itll cost somethin' special to land Hossa..and so far he hasnt come out and negated that possibility. And even then Im not sure what Id believe. People need to realize that GMs use the media as a part of their game. Do you think Holland is answering questions and doing interviews just so the fans can stick their nose in his business? Hell no. He couldnt care less about that. If a GM makes a statement to the press like this, its for other GMs to hear. Not us.
