He earns that 800-900k on reputation alone. The guy is a bulldog that brings a ton to this team in intangibles. That and the class of the Red Wings organization is why hes still earning nearly 1M per season.

I actually think both Tampa Bay and Montreal would have some interest in Sammy. Cheap, fairly skilled, secondary scoring with defensive ability is something both these teams could use and likely want. I bet we could get Ryder for Sammy and a high pick (1st or 2nd) or we could probably get Gratton and a mid-range pick (3-5) for Sammy. Come to think of it, Pittsburg and Columbus could probably use Sammy too. With the way his offense has picked up as hes headed for a 45ish point season at only 1.2 for another year, hed actually be pretty decent trade bait assuming what Detroit is asking for is a player like the ones youve mentioned..

If players want to stay with a team longterm, theyll take the slightly lesser paycheck to do it. I can easily see Cleary and Flip taking 3-5 year contracts at lesser terms in order to stay with the team. Flip is surrounded by great Euros and is a team player. Cleary is a similar team player and has found a niche here in Detroit. IMO, Cleary would be crazy to leave. Franzen is a different story. I could see him wanting to go to a team where he could earn more ice time. Hudler I can see leaving too, but thats another year off. Osgood will definitely take a discount to stay. Draper and Lids will be making slightly less and a guy like Quincey will likely take over Liljas spot at a few 100k less. Haseks money coming off the books will help, and the fact that the cap is projected to reach 54 million only helps matters. Keep in mind the more the cap goes up, the more it benefits Detroit. There are plenty of teams out there (Nashville, Anaheim, LA, Buffalo off the top of my head) that have self-imposed caps already. You can be sure other owners will start to impose similar restrictions on their teams, whereas we know Illitch will give Holland free reign...

Id bet big bucks Z gets closer to 7M than 8M. Heatley didnt take 8M, Spezza didnt take 8M, Hell Crosby only took 8.7 after winning two of the biggest awards in regular season hockey. You can be sure that Kenny knows what Hank COULD get, but you should know that Hank already said he wants to remain in the Winged wheel for life, and having Dats locked up long term is even more incentive. Hank will get 7M, and 7.5 will be pushing it. He doesnt touch 8M, not for worth, but for character.

Yeah. I mean, hes made some great passes and some even greater defensive plays. If you ask me, it almost seems like hes trying to let some of the younger guys shine and is just keeping his game fairly simple tonight. And at this point, hes probably just trying to get Flip the hattie.
