Holmstrom re-signed for 3 years, $6M (est.)
YoungGuns1340 replied to hockeyfanatic's topic in General
AWESOME. All these people bitching about Holland not doing s*** and here he was locking up one of the most important guys on our team to a three year contract. Ill be interested to see what Homer got. With the abuse he takes and the numbers hes put up lately, he could command a nice little chunk of change. Undoubtedly he got a raise - he deserves it - but I bet he took under what he could get on the market. Hell likely end up with 2 25 goal seasons in a row. Considering how valuable he is on the PP, his character itself, and the abuse he takes game in and game out, he probably couldve commanded 2.5M on the open market. -
you usually dont hear guys "showing respect" to other teams by saying "it's not a fun day" or "I dont feel good about it." He simply brushes over the fact that Nashville is a great team and continues on talking about how bummed he is. Its not a knock against Nashville, but its not going to hype up his teammates thats for sure. I wouldve happened to whatever team traded for him, which in this case just happens to be the Preds. If Forsberg's looking for money, he doesnt need to use tactics. Hell get whatever he wants from any number of teams. The thing is, this may be something that makes Philly fans feel good, but its sure as hell not going to make Preds fans feel good.

Burke said the same thing. Nonis said the same thing. Its a tactic they use - and most of them - in order to set the bar a little lower as a market standard. Im sure more GMs have said the same thing. "we arent going to make a trade for the sake of making a trade." The only guy that seems to have lost his head, and probably because the media was calling for his head last year when he couldnt get his stacked team very far, is Muckler who is supposedly offering Eaves for Roberts.

At least someone understands business tactics.
-
Do people not understand that businessmen use the media as a tool?? If hes saying "I dont need to make a trade" that moves him out of the light of desperation.

Nashville is 5-5 in their last 10 games. 4-5-1 coming into tonight. They have not been consistent lately - they had their hot streak a few weeks ago.
-
I remember hearing that too last year, but this year I havent heard anything about Drake. I did hear from Ted Kulfan a little while back, however, that Holland was interested in Mayers. If thats the case, I cant blame him. Hes a pretty good middleweight who may not always look to throw done against guys like Laraque or Boogard, but undoubteldy hed take on a Hartnell, Hagman, Mitchell type (all punks whove gone after our guys) if he hasnt already.

Nashville's record doesn't reflect it's team lately
YoungGuns1340 replied to Earthhuman's topic in General
See my post above that one HofH. That game went wrong for a number of reasons. But dont even think for a second that the Preds didnt go into that game knowing that MacDonald and his 20 ft rebounds were going to be in net. No doubt the fact that A) The game was second of back to back games B) we took 10 penalties and C) faced a full 2 minute 5 on 3 AND another partial 5 on 3 as well, had a lot to do with it. But the fact remains, both Osgood and especially Hasek are better than Joey on any given night. Edit: ahh, I see you are agreeing the Joey is in fact pretty abysmal, but nevertheless, he played a great part in the loss....as he does in most of his games. -
Honestly guys, we play Nashville like 4 times after the deadline. If we sign a Mayers, Drake, Bert, Fedoruk, Tkachuk type player AND get Kopecky back, well have enough guys who can run him in those four games. Not to mention pretty much everyone in the West from this point on will probably try and take out Forsberg any chance they get. I bet you any money when the Preds play St. Louis tonight, Forsberg will get hit any number of times. This guy is more fragile than my grandma. I doubt hell be 100% for the playoffs.

a playoff dud??? He had 3 goals in 5 games LAST SEASON. Hes far from being a dud.
-
Are there suddenly 8,000 people whove joined this board that are completely new to the sport of hockey??? Are people not aware that the majority of the trades made are made THE DAY BEFORE THE DEADLINE???? This is driving me crazy.

New York Daily News says Schneider is available?
YoungGuns1340 replied to vladyfan's topic in General
Not to mention Schneider's loyalty to the Wings really came through when he was a UFA talking about how hed really like to go back to New York or LA. -
Its definitely a move out of desperation. The Preds have to make a harder push for the cup than any other team in the NHL right now. If they dont start making some noise with trades and becoming the ABSOLUTE FAVORITE for the cup, their attendance problems will remain. They are supposedly averaging 14,000 fans a game and need to get that number up to a 16,800 average by the end of the season. Its been kept failry under wraps until recently, but the Preds need to create a rampant fan base ASAP or the city will pay either with taxes or being relocated.

tell me something I dont know. I dont see how this comment addresses my statement.

yes, enough goals. And probably a lot more had the defense and goaltending been solid, given that Edmonton boxed us out whenever they went up a goal. As for who else, there has been talk of both Derek Morris and Nick Boynton, in which case, Derek Morris would be an improvement, although the price would be expensive given his contract status. -

Damn...I completely forgot that when we played Nashville and lost 6-2, MACDONALD of all people was in net. And then theres the little fact that we took 10 penalties...and that there were 2 2on 3s against us...and one of them was a FULL 2 minute 5 on 3. And it was a second of back to back games. Knowing this, Id say Detroit has fared VERY well against Nashville this year. -
28 other teams wouldnt have had a chance in landing Floppa anyways. Nobody can compete with an offer of Upshall, Parent, a 1st and a 3rd and not sell the farm in the process.

New York Daily News says Schneider is available?
YoungGuns1340 replied to vladyfan's topic in General
Wha?? Do you remember the conversation about Schneider's defensive play in his own end during the playoffs?? He was widely considered to be one of our two worst defenseman defensively in the playoffs. He was terrible in his own end. Sure he put up the points, but as we all know, for the first time last year we scored enough goals to pull out the W's, yet we were constantly deflated by soft goals and piss poor defensive play. Im not going to care if Schneider sticks around, but it would be nice not have to worry about him repeating his defensive play again this year. -

Do you not watch Wings games??? Detroit has won 2 of 3 games, shutout Nashville's offense who was the best in the league at the time, and scored 5 goals against them the 2nd time exposing not just Vokoun but Mason as well. -

Schneiders been playing like crap since he returned from his injury. Hes work in the defensive zone is almost comparable to Lilja these days and Detroit did just fine without him on the PP. ...and we've had some terrible playoff luck since this guy came on board. If Detroit traded Schneider in a three way deal, and got a defenseman maybe out of Phoenix, I wouldnt mind at all. -
Watch after all this, Detroit trades something like Kronwall, Grigs and a 2 firsts to Edmonton for Smyth and Torres. Both guys are untouchables on their respective teams right? Hahaha, that would be amazing.
-
1) Nashville was a contender before they added Floppa. 2) Detroit has problems with the underdogs, not the big name teams 3) Detroit has more heart than they have in years and players that have more incentive to show up in the playoffs than ever before As for adding gritty players, well, we are in luck, because pretty much the only finesse guys available have already been traded - Nagy and Forsberg. The rest that remain - Bert, Roberts, Guerin, Tkachuk, Gelinas, Modin, Mayers, Fedoruk, Blake, Nolan, Tucker, O'Neill - are all gritty guys that address our needs. ...and there is no "deal now, or expect an early out." There are 12 more days til the deadline and you sound like a raving moron with these comments.
-
If you didnt notice, Dallas did exactly that to us last night. I know because all I kept on thinking up until the third period was how this is how it is going to be in the playoffs and that the Wings still, since 2004, havent figured out how to break it. Until last night. For the first time, our defense remained tight throughout the game, our goaltending was good when it had to be, and our forwards worked hard and perservered til the end. The result? a 3-1 victory. Our problems last year were goaltending and defense, before that it was a lack of scoring. This year, the Wings have had good goaltending, strong defense, and recently, a dominant first line. With an addition to the 2nd line and some grit on the bottom 6, this team will be better fit for the playoffs than they have been in years. The only reason nobody sees it now is because we are getting strong play from no names like Cleary, Lebda, and the rookies.

The Wings situation is much different from the Preds. For the Wings, the red carpet would be rolled out for Forsberg if all went as planned, meaning we added Forsberg, shipped off Lang, and signed another gritty winger at that. But I doubt there is anyone on this board who would be saying Forsberg is the answer to all of our problems if thats the only move Holland made. Forsberg>Lang no doubt but when it comes down to the playoffs Lang + scoring winger + physical 4th liner >>>> Forsberg
