Good to see Ozzie eating up those rebounds, even though theres no traffic.

Haha....Detroits "roughing" and Calgarys roughing are worlds apart.

This is one of the first Wings games Ive gotten to sit down and watch without any distractions, and so far its been a snoozer.

When the goal was first scored, I thought it was Cammalleri that scored it. And Daniels was in the middle of saying how Cammys a big goal scorer at home. But Cammy just got the assist. My bad.

A couple of questions for the hockey minds

Im guessing that all the times you recall Drapes pulling the puck back with his hand, its been in the defensive zone.

Its nuts how well Ericsson fits in on this team, at this level. I realize hes 25, but his transition has been seamless.

    Thoughts On Zach Parise

Outside of this board, hes VERY well known. When someone says "Parise", most non-Devils fans say "Devils MVP this season."

    Thoughts On Zach Parise

So you're saying we can expect this guy to be a perennial 100 point man? Not a chance. I like Parise, and hes having an awesome year, but I dont see him as anything close to a top 5 guy for years on end. I'd expect him to put up 80-90 points on average though, with some off years, and some better years.

Red Wings Goalie curse stretches to 18 years

Can the author of the article really ignore the correlation between drafting order and how these guys panned out? Clearly Detroit wasnt that concerned about their goaltending if they're selecting guys in the 3rd and 4th rounds, or later, for the most part. Detroit didnt care about drafting a goaltender until there was the prospect of a cap.

    Don Cherry's Comments

Oh yeah, and that interview exemplifies the difference between Ovechkin and Crosby. Ovechkins standing there with shaving cream all over his face saying he doesn't care what Cherry or anyone else thinks. Crosby on the other hand is tight-laced, dry as a bone, is concerned about what everyone thinks of him.

    Don Cherry's Comments

If you hear Ovechkin in the interview, it explains a lot. First of all, "the celebration" sounds more like an inside joke with his teammates than it does anything else. Looks more like teammate bonding after that. And then he acknowledges that Cherrys gonna talk about it, how hes gonna be pissed, how it likes it when Cherry brings him up, and then he says "old coach, old system." Really, all that put together makes me like Ovechkin more. He acknowledges that its good to stir up s***, he knows its good to get people talking, and he knows hes making a name for himself in the process by doing things that are vilified in the old system. The league should make him the head of publicity and be done with it.

The love and hate of Sidney Crosby

HAHA! "....and Crosby punching the lower half" On a more serious note, the first hit that Crosby threw was right to the back of the head of whoever he and his teammate were ganging up on. All kinds of dirty in that fight.

The love and hate of Sidney Crosby

When people say Crosby "sucks" they don't mean "he sucks at hockey." Last time I checked, saying someone "sucks" seeks to encompass that person entirely. And Crosby has done/said more than enough stupid things to warrant that label. It comes down to this: a lot of people hate Crosby because he comes off as a dick - he rarely comes off as a down to earth, likeable guy. People don't like to see assholes succeed. Since Crosby is definitely successful when it comes to hockey, hes hated by a ton of hockey fans. And those fans proceed to ***** about how much hes on TV, because if you know that an ******* is succeeding, you sure as hell dont want to be reminded of it.

Favorite player on each respective team

Let me just say that I pretty much hate every player within the context of NHL competition if they aren't a Red Wing. But as hockey players this would probably my list: Anaheim - Whitney Atlanta - Little Boston - Lucic Buffalo - Stafford Calgary - Cammy Carolina - Pitkanen Chicago - Seabrook Colorado - Salei Columbus - Modin Dallas - Neal Detroit - Datsyuk I guess Edmonton - Souray Florida - Booth Los Angelas - Brown Minnesota - Nolan Montreal - Latendresse Nashville - Legwand New Jersey - Shanahan NY Islanders - Hunter NY Rangers - Callahan Ottawa - Neil Philadelphia - Richards Phoenix - Doan Pittsburgh - Gonchar San Jose - Clowe St. Louis - Oshie Tampa Bay - Artyukhin Toronto - Hagman Vancouver - Burrows Washington - Ovechkin

Best thing I've read in a looooong time.

Its nice to contrast Lidstrom's "we're ready and focused" attitude with Chris Pronger's "what? the playoffs are already here" comments leading up to their Stanley Cup playoff defense in 08.

Tootoo gets his ass handed to him.

I was expecting some overblown fight with Staubitz barely coming out on top, but christ. Tootoo lined up for a Staubitz buffet of prime fist.

    ovechkin gets # 50

Not to be offensive, but maybe your intelligence should be insulted if you judge an entire populus on the basis of one comment.

    Crosby the tough guy

Somewhere lost amongst all this is the fact that Savard is what, 175 pounds and maybe 5'8? I dont buy what hes listed as on NHL.com, Savard is right up there (or down there, rather) with Hudler and Sullivan. There isnt a story here. Savard taunts Crosby to get him off his game, which isn't some secret , and Crosby proves his willing to guy with a guy smaller than him. Both guys come out of this looking like a couple of high schoolers who care way too much about what the other guys think.

    San Jose Drops the Ball

I'm sure people weren't too worried about the Wings after we went on our February skid. If anything, this rough stretch makes San Jose an even scarier team faced in the playoffs. Prior to this, it had been smooth sailing. Now they're equipped with a little lesson in adversity.

Whats also proven by actual numbers is Michigan's unemployment rate of 10.6% (i.e. at least 1 out of 10 people is unemployed), compared to the national average of 7.4. Whats really ironic is that Alberta's unemployment rate is 3.6% - the lowest in all of Canada - while Michigan's umployment rate is the highest in all of the US. I prefer to look at events that support the Red Wings that are free of cost, in which case 1.2 MILLION people show up, which is actually more than a third of Alberta's entire population. Fancy that.

Those stats are deceiving. They don't fight, and they don't have anyone on the roster that is known for dirty play. What you should be looking at is how many MINORS a team gets called for - that excludes majors and misconducts, which are the result of fighting and heinous play. For minors, Detroit is the 9th least penalized team. And its no shocker that Calgary is 24th, with Philly and Anaheim being the most penalized teams in the NHL. See the pattern here? Being physical brutes is going to result in more penalties, especially against teams who have no players to tango with the tough guys (see: The Wings). Also, the Wings play a puck possession game. Meaning, they hold onto the puck as much as they, for as long as they can. How many times do you take a penalty when you have the puck, as opposed to when you don't have the puck.

Technically, only one of those "soft Euro teams" won a cup. But that still proves it can be done.
