    San Jose Drops the Ball

St. Louis still has an NHL team? Sorry... I usually only pay attention to the league around April and into the playoffs and I haven't seen the Blues play a game at that time in about 30 years. Is Tony McKegney still on their team? I do remember Yzerman's goal against them in Game 7 in the playoffs but I thought after that they moved the franchise to Carolina?

    Sharks @ Coyotes 3/17 GDT

Just tuned in, glad to see the Yotes putting a beat down on the Sharks. The rest of the game should be pretty intense as I'm sure the Sharks will open it up being down by three.

    Brodeur passes Patrick Roy

Roy sucks balls. Never pass up on an opportunity to say that.

    Westward, ho!

Maybe hockey just isn't their thing. Maybe the Islanders can move to Detroit and become the Lions next year - they coudn't lose any more games next season as the "new" Lions than the "old" Lions did this season.

potential solution for franzen hossa problem

While we're at it, maybe we can trade Filpulla for the rights to Alexandre Daigle. Then maybe we can convince Dale McCourt to come out of retirement; he can't be much older than Cheli... Maybe Pavel Brendl would accept a deal from the Wings in the 4mil/yr range too?? Does anyone have Yashin's number on their speed dial? I hear he would like a new contract as well. The funny thing is that I would do all the above deals before ever signing Penner. The last thing we need is a lazy square head who makes way too much money and never met a doughnut he didn't like or a push-up he did like.

    Habs fire Carbonneau

This reminds me of when Jersey did it a few games before the end of the season in 2000. I'm sure Montreal is hoping for a similar result. In 2000, Lamoriello fired coach Robbie Ftorek with just nine games left in the season. Assistant coach Larry Robinson took over, and the Devils defeated Dallas to win the Stanley Cup. In other Montreal news, Carboneau was interviewed about his plans after coaching and replied, "Well, the Kostitsyn boys say they know some good fellas who might be interested in hiring casual helpers for a little under the table money to tide me over till Quenville or Granato are fired again".

    Rumor: Scott Clemmenson to Detroit?

This year Scott Clemmenson started 39 games with the Devils in Brodeur's absence and went 25 and 13 while posting a 2.30 GAA and a .917 save percentage. He would be available through trade as he was currently sent down to Jersey's minor league affiliate after Brodeur returned. He only makes .5m/yr and we could easily fit that in on the pro-rated scale after March 4. To say he was stellar for the Devils is an understatement and he would fill the biggest hole on our team heading into the playoffs. What would Jersey want in return for him? Would they be looking for an "impact" player right now to help them in their playoff drive this year or a prospect/pick package that could help them in the future? Would Kenny be willing to trade a little of the DRW famed loyalty for a shot at repeating this year? Getting a legitimate chance to repeat doesn't come along very often for a franchise. Usually there are significant personnel losses or a myriad of other factors which lessens the chance of winning the cup two years in a row but from a defense and forward perspective it could be argued that the Wings are actually stronger this year than last with the additions of Hossa, Leino, Helm and Ericsson and the improved play of Hudler, Sammy and Franzen in the regular season. This good a chance to repeat might not come along for 20 years. I would welcome someone to push Ozzie and Conks. I know it would cause roster spot issues, and Ozzie's nose might get out of joint but it might be worth it to improve the goaltending situation heading into the playoffs. If you were Kenny would you make the trade, and what would you be willing to give up in the form of either a current roster player or a prospect/pick package?

    Avery on reentry waivers Monday...

I doubt that Torts wants Tippet's sloppy seconds. It wouldn't just be *** for tat with a **** like Avery either... they still have to pay/play him for 3 more years after this season too.

    Best bang for your buck

Mule, Z, Sammy, Hudler, Dats and Conklin would be on my list. I think Getlaf's contract is reasonable and there's a few more years on it left to go where I bet he'll perform as well or better than this year. Going the other way i think those two clowns in New York are worst bang for your buck - Gomez and Drury.
  11. Ya right - so Hal Gill should have been a number one pick? Gimme a break Bobby Clarke...

Where do you want the next Winter Classic be?

In my backyard. Seating will be an issue. And Pierre McGuire isn't invited.

    Trade Deadline

Our "upgrade" in net was sitting on the bench tonight tracking faceoffs and waiting to record his next (will be league leading) shutout.

Helm for the Calder next year. You heard it here first. Leino comes in third in the voting.

Helm has Zetterbergian hustle and determination. No way he's bumped out of the lineup when everyone's healthy. Malts; have a seat buddy.

Hossa: "Datsyuk should be league MVP"

If Hossa's a Homer then does that make Homer a Happy-Hudler?

    Hossa and the Wings

Well here's the thing about that. If we look at 1990-1991, what was a "huge" salary then and what it would be now (Gretzky made the most at 3mil/yr, Lemieux next at 2.1), I think we'll find that the same thing will happen 12 years down the road and the 6mil/yr for each of them won't be such a big deal. Given that we (North America) will come out of this economic slump at some point and a modest rate of growth/inflation will ensue over the next 10-12 years, their salaries may be perfectly in line with their declining production for that year. Giving a superstar 3mil/yr a few years ago seemed HUGE! Now it is middle of the road, and I'm very confident that KennyGodHolland has consulted with more than a few financial analysts as to how a 6mil/yr contract will look on the cap 12 years from now. Who's to say we won't be dealing with team Caps of 80 or 90mil/yr in 12 years time? Can you honestly see the price of everything DECLINING over the next 12 years? Will gas be 50 cents/gallon? Will a loaf of bread cost 20cents? I highly doubt it. When I was in high school 15 years ago a can of pop was 50cents, now it costs 1.25$; more than double the cost back then.

Hossa: "Datsyuk should be league MVP"

Did anyone else read the END of the article where Hossa is quoted as saying "yes, I'll take less" to stay in Detroit? Am I the only one excited about this confirmation right from Hossa? We've heard it rumored before, but this is from the man himself. I'm sure he could still change his mind but this is a pretty good indication of his intentions. If we can get Hossa, Zetterberg and Datsyuk all signed for the "6" range instead of the "8" range that they could easily and surely get on the open market then Kenny should be up for Saint-hood, as I hear it takes 3 miracles. What it boils down to is 3 of the world's top players for 18+ mil/year instead of 24+ mil/year. That's a cap savings in the neighborhood of 6mil/year! That's like the Red Wings having an extra 6mil/yr more cap space than any other team in the league, and all done legally too. Betman must be crying in his soup as he realizes this. The Wings are still able to "spend more" than any other team even WITH the Cap in place lol. That extra cap space can surely go to Franzen (3-4mil) and Hudler (2-3mil) right? Wishful thinking I know, but if Kenny can keep Dats, Z, Hossa, Franzen, Fil, and one of Hudler or Sammy then he is a god who should be worshiped nightly. Dats, Z, Hossa; all playing for 6+mil/year; let's compare that to what other teams have had to spend recently to keep their superstars in place: Lecavailler - 7.7/yr Gomez - 7.35/yr Ovechkin - 9.5/yr Malkin - 8.7/yr Crosby - 8.7/yr Thornton - 7.2/yr Drury - 7.05/yr Heatly - 7.5/yr Spezza - 7.0/yr Brad Richards - 7.8/yr Vanek - 7.1/yr E. Staal - 8.25/yr Wow. It appears other teams have trouble even getting one superstar to sign for less than 7mil/yr... let alone THREE of them. 6mil and a lifetime supply of Little Ceasars goes a long ways at the Joe compared to what it would buy at other arenas around the league. Amazing job Kenny. Amazing job by Stevie, Lids, Pav, and Z to "buy into" the Wings own salary cap structure regardless of what is going on around the league. Now if Hoss, Mule and Huds buy in as well we can hopefully hoist a few more banners in the near future.

    Marty Lapointe

Or the Gritty Gary Roberts. As much as I hated him last year and can't stand Cherry gobbling his sausage every chance he gets on HNIC I still wouldn't mind seeing the former Flame on our fourth line for the playoffs. His cap hit is 2mil but at the deadline I think we could afford it, especially if Homer can't come back Gary would provide a nice replacement in front of the net on the odd PP. He still hits hard and has that edge to his game that Drake brought us last year too. Put him with Helm and Draper and we have a pretty good fourth line again.

Ericsson to leave? Toskala to arrive?

This is more Toronto "wishful thinking" than anything. Sometimes I swear that Toronto fans and media sit around dreaming up what they would like to see happen and then they decide to print it somewhere just to see if maybe by printing it they can make it come true. I was never happier thanwhen their "wish" of acquiring Lindross finally came true and he sucked the big one with them; be careful what you wish for Leaf-blowers!

    Gretzky

Yea right... He'd whip out his trusty cell phone out so fast it would make our heads spin - "Dave? It's me, the Great One calling, I need you again Dave... no I already tried Marty's number, he told me to grow a pair and do something on my own for a change, pleeeeeeease Dave, I promise this will be the last time, for real this time, you gotta come now! Someone is picking on me again! They said I'm really not the greatest and that my point totals were more a product of the horrendous standup goalies of the era and the fact that we never backchecked or played ANY defense!! I can't take it anymore Dave! Please come bail my whiny sniveling ass out and hammer this annoying fan with your manly cement-like hands."

    Gretzky

Whine Gretzky... he's the greatest; just ask him.
