From Phoenix I would welcome: Shane Doan (I think he's overrated, but we could really use him on the RW) Nick Boynton (Tough, tough guy, if we had room on D I would love to get him) Derek Morris (Like Boynton, tough guy, if we had room I'd love him here) Georges Laraque (For cheap, I'd take him on the 4th line no doubt, but I don't think he is the perfect fit that people seem to think he is) Owen Nolan (It would be nice to see someone with some balls in a Wing's uniform again)

Not necessarily, IMO that is part of the reason that "enforcers" are becoming useless (or so people say), Probert and McCarty were able to go with anyone in the league, and they weren't hesitant about beating the living s*** out of anyone else in the league who caused the team problems.. there aren't too many players that play that reckless nowadays but Brashear, Boogaard, Barch, Gratton, etc. are all great enforcers in my mind and could handle the job as being the only fighter on a team.. of course it's great to have more than 1 guy who will fight, but I wouldn't say that you NEED to have a HW enforcer and a MW enforcer to keep the other team under control anyways, back on topic... Laraque wouldn't change a team's mentality when facing the Red Wings
-
How do you figure? I'm sure the entire league is aware that Laraque is a gigantic teddy bear, don't challenge him and he won't touch you, unless he has changed his style in the past few years (before I've been able to watch him a lot), this is the style of "enforcing" he plays, it won't mean jack if he's on the bench IMO
-
I have mixed feelings on Laraque, I really don't think he is the type of guy to protect our smaller guys from dirty plays, Laraque would never go after anyone who is not a top 20 fighter in the league. (Mitchell, Torres, Greene, Drake, etc...) I don't think he is very comfortable instigating either.

good man thanks

I'd love to see Doan with the Wings but Laraque... not so much. I'm a big fan of hockey fighting and respect Laraque's fighting skills, but I don't even consider him an enforcer. His fights seem to be on his own terms for nothing more than entertainment (recently, anyways). He's just too nice of a guy, I'd take a lesser fighter for someone with a mean streak who isn't afraid of pulling a McCarty (on Claude) if necessary

Darren helm picked up 2 goals today in Canada's win over the U.S. 1st Goal: with 2 minutes left in the game the puck was shot out of the Canadian end and Helm showed amazing speed to beat the U.S. defender and crash into the net with the puck going in aswell. 2nd Goal: in the last minute of the game Helm received a pass just outside of the Canadian blueline and skated over the red line before firing a shot through a U.S. defender into the open net He also picked up a 2 minute boarding penalty for drilling a U.S. defender into the boards. I'm really impressed so far... great speed, great forechecker, finishes his hits, decent hands, goes hard to the net, good defensive awareness, has had a scrap in each of his last 3 years in the WHL.

Matt Ellis has been an overachiever all of his hockey career, he started out in the ECHL and a couple years later he's a top notch AHL player.. It's really frustrating to see that he was hardly given any ice time during the preseason, but I guess he didn't prove a whole lot with the ice he was given.. Unfortunately, in my opinion it will take a big jump in Matt's game for him to become a favourite in the Wings' depth chart, he's definately a solid two way player but until he adapts to a real hard hitter, or starts scrapping a little more often, he will just be looked at as a franchise AHL player

and that has absolutely nothing to do with this thread

That's all anyone ever talks about on this board, getting Datsyuk, Zets and Knonwall signed... it's a priority, yes, but not the only thing that matters
