Hudler's a real good player, great vision and very good passer. Shame he barely plays. I wish Filppula wouldn't go wide all the time. Flip and Huds have some chemistry though, keep them together Babs.

Not sure what to say. We look so flat and aren't playing with any intensity. The lines just aren't clicking. I though the 1st line looked good, Datsyuk was great and Hossa had a few pretty heavy shots. I think he'll get his first as a Wing tonight. Second line was okay but didn't generate many quality scoring chances. Didn't see Hudler but I look at the event summary and realise why. He played less than 90 seconds, the lowest of ANYONE on the team. Staggering. I realise we didn't get a PP but cmon Babs, stop treating him so poorly. Not worried about this game because we're only down by 1 despite playing so bad.

Wings look really, really ordinary. Just nothing is clicking, I assume it's been like this all season. I tell you who doesn't look ordinary though, Datsyuk. He is amazing.

Comedy at it's finest. Yeah so the crowd would be a significant improvement if Downey were up with the team...

Well I can't even listen to this game, loks like WXYT is doing post game of another sport, and NHL.com now has barely any radio features, at least not that I can find. Looks like NHL.com real time is how I'm following this game...

    Brunnstrom, don't look now

You can't deny the man given he just scored a hat trick in his NHL debut however they were very much 'right place, right time' kind of goals.

Last time I got stung by a bee it got so bad I had to rush to hospital. Thankfully haven't been stung for quite a few years now, not sure what'll happen next time, don't really want to find out either.

    Weekend Picks

Well I’m glad to announce that Weekend Picks is back for another year! As usual for the first week I thought I’d start the thread a little earlier so we get a lot of people picking with the hope of having even more regular participants this season. And it would be great if people who picked for the initial week continued to play each and every week as it makes for more interesting competition that way. Everyone feel free to play; the rules are simple. All you do is bold the team you think will win, or just type your predicted winners. After all the games are completed I then add up and post the results and the standings are posted when the next thread is up. Good luck everyone! Friday: NY Islanders @ New Jersey Chicago @ NY Rangers Florida @ Carolina Montreal @ Buffalo Washington @ Atlanta Nashville @ St Louis Columbus @ Dallas Saturday: Montreal @ Toronto Detroit @ Ottawa St Louis @ NY Islanders NY Rangers @ Philadelphia Chicago @ Washington Atlanta @ Florida New Jersey @ Pittsburgh Carolina @ Tampa Bay Dallas @ Nashville Boston @ Minnesota Columbus @ Phoenix Los Angeles @ San Jose Vancouver @ Calgary Sunday: Phoenix @ Anaheim Colorado @ Edmonton San Jose @ Los Angeles
  16. Considering how much talk there has been about our young prospects and the quality of depth within our organisation, I thought the interest in the Griffins might be pretty high this season. So I’ll test the waters and see if we can generate enough interests to warrant GDT’s. The Griffins open their season on the road against Lake Erie. Possible line-up: Leino - Helm - Haydar Wilson - Emmerton - Mursak Oulahen - Abdelkader - Ritola Tardif - McGrath - Downey Ericsson - Atherton Stafford - Kindl Galvin - Pyett Larsson Reichmuth Notes: • Rookie and 20th ranked prospect per RWC Sergei Kolosov not expected to crack the opening night line-up. • The Griffins are loaded up front with Lemieux, Pare, Gagnon and Gelech all possibly healthy scratches. • Jimmy Howard is with the team but not practicing due to his injured finger.

    Zetterbergs line

I can’t believe how quickly jump the gun. We’re even talking about the possibility of Hudler being traded or scratched? My goodness, we’re 3 games into the season and the questions are already being asked. So Hudler might not have any points yet, and Babcock might be thinking about switching the lines up a bit, but has everyone already forgotten how successful Hudler was in last seasons playoffs? He played extremely well during the time he was meant to be exposed for being too short and too slow. Well he proved the doubters wrong but it appears they’re already coming back. And no we won’t see Abdelkader called up to take his place; the only way he plays this season is if we have another shocking run with injuries. Helm and Leino will both play a fair amount of games this season but it won’t be to replace Hudler, once again it’ll be to cover any injuries we happen to suffer. The lines might not be connecting just yet but we really need to give them time. I don’t think anyone imagined just how different the lines would look at how much time they need to adjust. You could make a case for putting HZD back together but it would be a waste of the tremendous talent and depth we had at our disposal. Just think ahead to the playoffs and imagine how much trouble opposing teams will have attempting to defend all our scoring lines. Cleary-Filppula-Samuelsson as a third line? That’s amazing. Short term pain, long term gain.

    You drive that car?!

Cleary getting his turn on the Zetterberg line?

I knew Hudler playing on the second line wouldn’t last long. I guess through the first 3 games he hasn’t done much to deserve staying there but he hasn’t had much ice-time, certainly not the time you would expect for a second liner. I think it's worth playing Hudler and Filppula on the same line to see if they can gel because they seem to be pretty good mates who might be able to form some chemistry.

    10/13 GDT: Red Wings 3, Hurricanes 1

Had to go to uni this morning so missed the entire game. Great to see we won and looking at the highlights on NHL.com Conklin made some amazing saves. Good to see Zetterberg score his first of the season, empty net or not. Rafalski quietly off to a great start offensively with 4 points. Hossa's pass to Holmstrom was a thing of beauty, hopefully he starts being more active and alert out there because so far he's been pretty underwhelming. I guess time is all that's required.

    Latendresse Vs. Kindl and Abdelkader

Good post eva, pretty much sums it up for me. I can't help but get the feeling Latendresse is overrated, he's a solid young player who has good size and is pretty effective on the PP, but he's hardly set the NHL alight. Abdelkader is a pretty complete player who doesn't have any real weaknesses. He’s a real good skater, plays physical, can score and is very responsible defensively. Babcock will love him. He’s probably just an all-round better version of Kopecky. Kindl, well he’s my favourite prospect and despite a rough initiation in the AHL he’ll be fine. He seems to have a tough time adjusting to a new level but when he does he plays with real confidence. I’m sure he’ll have a much improved season with the Griffins and will have a fine NHL career. His upside is enormous.

And I must admit this is probably the worst I’ve felt about winning a week because I blew it by going 0/3 on Sunday, one of only 2 people to go without a win. Big thanks to everyone for playing, considering we had about 99 participants all of last season, it was a great result first up. Hope to see you all back later in the week when it comes time for Week 2 picks.

The Bertuzzi - Matthias (+ picks) trade

Well he's played 2 games, is pointless and is -3. Reports are that he's looked very underwhelming. But he's very good and no doubt has a bright future.

    Update on McCollum

41 saves from 43 shots today, named the games 2nd star in Guelph's 3-2 SO win.

10/11 GDT: Grand Rapids Griffins @ Lake Erie Monsters

Well unfortunately the Griffins lost 4-3 in OT. Shots were 36-34 in favour of the Griffins. Darren Helm took a game high 7 shots, Leino took 5. Justin Abdelkader was named 3rd star with a goal, 5 shots and +1. Going 0-7 on the PP was basically the reason they lost.
