In a perfect world Staal is probably only worth 2.5-3 mil for 3 years, but in the National Hockey League GMs overpay for players, it's as factual as saying that the sun will rise tomorrow. Although untested, Staal has overwhelming potential, and given where he was drafted alone, is looking for close to 5 mil. Considering the fact that Staal isn't even a legal adult, he could very hit his breakout season in the next few years and it will be much better than this years campaign. Coincidentally, this breakout could very well occur in a contract year, and all the sudden the Penguins are going to have to Pony up the big bucks. signing Staal to 4 years at about 4 million would be somewhat unlikely, but a great value for the Pens.

Even if they somehow find a way to bring back Hossa, Orpik, and the other big names, They're going to have to lose a lot of depth, and won't have the cap room to have much of anything on their fourth line. By signing their big name guys this summer, they almost guarantee that they won't be able to bring back Malkin or Staal. Re-signing Hossa will absolutely kill they're cap, and assuming Malkin has another big year in 08-09, he's going to be looking for 10 mil. Point is, as great as it would be for them to keep everyone, they can't.

Wow I can't think of any sports team ever, as consistently excellent as the wings over the past 16 years.
-
I think status quo is the biggest thing here for the wings. They should extend Zetterberg now, and then see what they can do with cap space. I think bringing in Owen Nolan or a player like that will help this team stay gritty and provide emotional leadership. They have a lot of good young players, and I think they can win the cup next year with no major additions. I'd also like them to leave a little cap room to aquire an experienced back up goalie for the post season if Howard doesn't pan out.

The parade was awesome, just from being there I could tell there was a mill, but I wasn't expecting 1.4! Awesome job Detroit!

He would be nice to keep, but he's been inconsistent his whole career, and hopefully that won't be the case with the wings, but no one can be sure. We have the young depth at the blue line that will allow to maintain a formidable defense with or without. I'd love to keep him, but if Stuart is looking for the most money, which will be a lot after his excellent play in the playoffs, I don't think the wings can keep him.

Excellent job!!! love the vid -
as much as I love his class, I don't think it outweighs getting to watch him hoist the cup again. Gotta love that man.
-
I'll be there, does anybody have any vague estimate of what the attendance will be?
-
Thanks great stuff!!! Gotta love Lebda

Thanks for coming over over to post guys, other than a few exceptions, I enjoyed having some intelligent hockey conversations with pens fans. Hopefully we'll see you again next year.
-
I saw in add saying that they will have over 100 different red wings stanley cup items. Hopefully it's true, cause everything they have today isn't exactly top notch.
-
I second the notion that Hossa was their best player but won't get the credit. He hit a lot of posts, and had a few scoring chances at the end of all the 1 goal games. He's due for a big pay day, and it will be interesting to see where he winds up.
-
He's got a good shot, but I'm still skeptical. I still don't feel like he is recognized like as an elite goalie outside of Detroit. It's possible, but he's definately not a shoo in.

Mr. Andreas Liljia is probably deserving of a few apologies from me I didn't think we could win with him starting on the blue line, and he proved me wrong. He made a few mistakes, but he played good hockey and got the job done.
-
agreed, thanks matt, i look forward to more of the same next year!

Drake and Dom. I doubt Cheli retires, and I think Kenny will sign him at the minimum, but I'm not sure if he'll have a role on the team next year.

Unbeleivable, unbeleivable, no matter how much you think it's going to happen, it feels just unbelievable watching those guys in the winged wheel host the cup. -

The wings have to play smart this period, they've already gotten more breaks that I expected, and I think we can credit that to Babs -

Awesome period with the exception of the turnover by Kronwall. Ozzie's got his game on. The wings need to be strong for the first five minutes of the 2nd so the Pens have nothing to build off. GO WINGS BRING IT HOME! -
wow, this is the type of thread that just pisses me off. I hate being negative when it's not neccesary, and this is just the worst possible day to do it. The wings are a complete team, and have no Anti-Conn Smythe BRING IT HOME BOYS!!!!

I love Al, and I doubt it upset him, it's all in good fun, and I think it's pretty funny.
