2009 FIA Formula One World Championship Season

Webber got spun off the nose of Robert Kubica coming out of the della Roggia chicane (the second chicane) on the first lap, his car getting stuck in the gravel trap. Certainly a rare occurrence for him. And now, BIG news concerning Renault: Flavio Briatore, Pat Symonds out at Renault The bold part is big. It looks like Renault will accept any punishment the FIA will hand out on the 20th. It looks like either Briatore, Symonds, or both came forward and spilled the beans about Singapore 2008. Whether those two voluntarily quit the team or "voluntarily" quit the team isn't know. If the FIA comes down hard on Renault, either through a season ban or a huge monetary fine, it could usher the end of Renault's participation in F1 for the foreseeable future. -

Lotus Granted 13th Entry This Lotus F1 Team has nothing to do with the original Team Lotus that raced in F1 until 1994. Lotus, as a car manufacturer, is owned by Proton, a Malaysian car maker. The Team Lotus name is owned by David Hunt (brother of the late James Hunt), and a Classic Team Lotus is owned and run by Clive Chapman, son of the late Lotus founder Colin Chapman. The sole purpose of this Lotus F1 Team is marketing for the Lotus cars, nothing more. BMW Expects Team to Race in 2010 The FIA is going to try to expand the grid to 28 cars (up from 26 with the new teams entered) to accommodate the Sauber team. It is possible that one team drop out at the end of 2009 (Toyota? Renault with the recent scandal?), and that the grid will remain at 26 cars/13 teams. -

Renault summoned by FIA's World Motor Sports Council This could be huge to not only this year's championship, but also last year's as well, because if the FIA decide to exclude Renault from last year's championship, there is a possibility that Massa may win the championship instead of Hamilton. I'll have to do the math for it, but it's a possibility. Of course, that depends on what punishment the FIA dishes out. They could exclude Renault from this year's championship, last year championship, or go the McLaren route, and fine the team a huge amount of cash. Anything is possible. BTW, Article 151c is the same violation that McLaren got in the whole Spy-gate thing, so it would be interesting to see how this all plays out. Renault (the manufacturer) could walk away from F1, leaving the F1 team management hanging from the punishment. Flavio should be very nervous right about now. -

Fisichella to Ferrari from Monza onward Looks like those rumors of Fisi to Ferrari became true. Vitantonio Liuzzi will apparently take Fisi's seat at Monza. With Massa not returning until 2010, this will help Ferrari secure 3rd in the WCC standings, as Badoer was, quite frankly, a square wheel on the Ferrari. And now, word comes out that Renault was being investigated by the FIA involving last year's Singapore GP in which Piquet Jr crashed and brought out the safety car, which ultimately helped Fernando Alonso to the win. There were rumors that Piquet Jr was told to crash deliberately to aid Alonso, and that the FIA will decide by the end of this week about convening the World Motor Sports Council. If Renault is found to have intentionally creating a safety car period, they could face anything from a huge financial penalty to expulsion from Formula One. And with rumors that Toyota may leave F1 at the end of this season if they don't get a win, it means that potentially 4 manufacturers would leave F1 for one reason or another (Honda at the end of '08 and BMW). Interesting times this season. Not all for good reasons, though -

Hamilton and Alguersuari both got swept up in the incident. Fisichella lead briefly, but Kimi's Ferrari overtook him and would eventually win the race. Most interesting thing at the end of the race was Barrichello's Brawn smoking several laps before the end. Once he took the checkered flag, the marshals directed all of the cars towards the paddock. The world feed switched to an onboard of Barrichello's Brawn looking behind him, and you can see a fire burning on his car as he goes down pit lane Credit to Bob Varsha (commentator for SPEED's coverage of F1) for running with it ("Here's Barrichello trying to burn down the paddock." ). So, the race will start in the twilight hours and transition to night at the end of the race. -

Yeah, I'm sure the reason for 2 GPs in NA was to justify the cost of traveling oversea. I think that the only time you'll see a solo GP in NA is if it is the beginning of the season or the end of the season. And, obviously the 2 NA GPs would be back-to-back to save costs of traveling back and forth between the European rounds and the NA rounds. Now, for something from the "WTF!?" files: Spa to shard Grand Prix date with Nurburgring? So instead of experiencing the joys and wonders of the magnificent Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps every year, we'll only see it every other year? I don't see any upside to it. So that means that, if this does happen, the Belgian Grand Prix would be in 2010, the German/European Grand Prix in 2011, etc (this is all hypothetical, as I don't know the exact details of this deal). I'm not sure what GP the Nurburgring will hold outside of the German GP, as Valencia hosts the European Grand Prix, and the AvD (the owners of the Hockenheimring) owns the rights to the German Grand Prix (but an agreement allows the race to alternate between the two German circuits). -

Angry Piquet confirms Renault exit No word on who will replace Piquet, but I have heard of GP2 driver Roman Grosjean taking over the seat (though Grosjean has been horribly inconsistent in GP2 this season). Also, Renault's appeal will be heard on the 17th, three days before the European Grand Prix at Valencia. They won't know the decision until the 18th, which would be for Friday practice, I believe. Renault would lose out on a lot of money if they travel to Valencia, only to hear that their appeal has been denied. And finally, F1 may return to Montreal in 2010 if the city and Bernie Eccelstone come to an agreement on sanctioning fees and such. -

I was about to post about that While it's nice to see Schumacher back in the Prancing Horse, I wonder if Ferrari looked at their test drivers (Luca Badoer and Marc Gene), or decided that Schumacher would be the best at getting Ferrari much needed wins and podiums. BMW announced Formula One withdrawl It's sad to see BMW go, but with the world economy down like it is, it's not easy trying to justify spending millions of dollars on motorsports when people are losing their jobs, especially in the manufacturing sector. Frankly, I thought Toyota (first year of losses since the 1940s) or Renault (a small car manufacturer) would pull out of F1 before BMW did. No word on if Peter Sauber (who owns a 20% stake in the team after BMW bought him out) will continue on as a privateer. If Peter Sauber doesn't participate, then one of the new teams not initially chosen for the 2010 season would most likely take the spot. -

Also, the FOTA teams have decided to idle their F1 shops for 2 weeks as a way of saving money. I haven't read when the FIA will hear Renault's appeal of their suspension from the European Grand Prix, it will be sometime before the next race. No more tape-delayed races here in the US, as FOX has aired the 4 Grands Prix that they normally do at this time of the year. Henry Surtees, F1 World Champion John Surtees' son, dies in F2 race at Brands Hatch One car had spun and made contact with the barrier at Westfield Bend, sheering off one of the car's wheels. The wheel bounce across the track, with various car successfully missing it. Sadly, Henry was unlucky and was struck in the head by the wheel. Knocked unconscious, his car continued forward towards Sheene Curve, impacting the barrier there, coming to a stop. Henry was extracted by the safety team, stabilized at the infield care centre, then flown to the Royal London Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Henry Surtees was 18 years. -

There are rumors that Bourdais may be fired from his Toro Rosso ride after this weekend because of his poor performance (he's the lowest ranked of the Red Bull cars in 16th with just 2 points, where his team mates, Buemi, is 14th with 3 points). If Bourdais does get released, I could see him going to the Peugeot LMP1 team (he's raced with them in the past 2 24 Hours of Le Mans). Red Bull Racing was fined 10k Euros by the race stewarts for releasing Vettel in pit line that nearly caused a collision with Kazuki Nakajima. Also, Glock will start at last place after the stewarts determined that he blocked Alonso during qualifying. Glock was originally docked 3 grid positions, but seeing as he slotted in 19th, he just loses 1 spot. And it wouldn't be F1 without some form of controversy, as FOTA renews it's threats of a breakaway series after being told they are not official entrants in next year's season Remember the FIA's press release on 2010's entrants? Well, apparently, the FIA figured that the FOTA eight teams (Ferrari, Red Bull/Toro Rosso, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Force India, McLaren-Mercedes) didn't drop their conditional entries for next year, and thus were not allowed to take part in the FIA's Technical Working Group (TWG) to hash out the technical aspects of next year's rules. Those that did take part (and were allowed to have a say) were Williams-Toyota, Brawn-Mercedes, Team US F1, Manor Grand Prix, and Campos Meta Team (Williams was kicked out of FOTA after signing up for next year's championship against FOTA's wishes, and Brawn, to my knowledge, hasn't joined FOTA, but side with them). Even though US F1, Manor, and Campos are not FOTA members, you can bet they will side with FOTA is they feel they have to. Also, Max Mosley, current President of the FIA, has stated that he would stand for re-election if he feels he has to preserve Formula One racing, obviously pissing off many in FOTA (and the millions of F1 fans world wide). Frankly, we will know for sure what will happen to the future of F1 when we see 26 cars on the grid next year at Australia and the FOTA teams are participating in it. Ah, F1 politics. Don't y'all love it -

FIA Press Release regarding the 2010 championship The press release also have stuff involving other FIA-sanctioned series, but at the top is the one on Formula One. I am glad that there is no split. I'm sure there are many that are disappointed that there isn't a breakaway from the FIA, but this is probably the best we'll get for a while. Max Mosley, the President of the FIA, will not run for re-election at the end of October, where his term ends. -
