Not so tough if you think about it. We'd have to make a dollar for dollar trade to get him now. So at the end of the season we'd be at the cap #'s as now. Get Kovalchuk signed to a 14 year deal at 6.5 or similar to Dats, and Lids should be taking a paycut next year anyway. Maybe he get $5 mill. one year deal. Then we should have around $2 mill to play w/ if Homer and Bert are signed to similar deals or their deals together = what they = this year. Worse comes to worse, you do have a guy you can trade in Stuart. Hudler rights have to be moved IMO though. If he decides to come back next year it'd throw a monkey-wrench in this whole equation.

I don't agree that replacing Kronwall and Flip w/ Kovalchuk is "blowing up the team" one bit. On paper I think the roster w/o Flip and Kronwall and w/ Kovalchuk is nearly as good as the one we have now. So, that is not blowing up a team by any means. And of course this is based on Kovalchuk signing a deal long term here, which I am sure could be done no matter what the papers are saying right now.

Why the hell not? Kovalchuk is better than Hossa, a 50 goal scorer. Can play the Point on the PP, which DETROIT LOVES, and is just great great great. Flip and Kronwall might have nice contracts in your opinion, but players like Kovalchuk hardly EVER come around. Flip I'm sorry is very replaceable especially when you are replacing his forward spot w/ Ilya FRICKING KOVALCHUK!! lol. Kronwall would be a big lose, but you have to give something to get something.

Yeah he could be Nev. I mean Flip is a pretty good player. And as far as that package that we both suggested, how much better can other teams really do? And ATL for sure would perfer to trade to the East. So if a similar deal comes from an Eastern team, ATL would defiently choose to go w/ the Wings' package. This could be that shoot in the Arm this team needs too.

No. Why?? Do you think that is too much for Kovalchuk or do you think that ATL wouldn't take it? I mean, if I'm ATL what are they going to get that is better? Frolov and Jack Johnson? Please, Krownwall alone is better than those two combined. And Flip is a great player as well. Plus, add in the picks and other small salary guys if necessary and that is something that could happen.

Although, if the Wings could do something like Kronwall and Flip + others guys if necessary (Lenio, rights to Hudler) + a couple picks and we could sign him for long term, I'd do that in a heartbeat. Then hope Ericsson really picks it up next year and hope that Lids comes back and keep Stuart, look for a Dman on UFA to replace a little bit of what you lose w/ Kronwall. Might not win the Cup this year due to the back end, but we'd have Kovalchuk, Dats, Franzen, and Zetterberg to build a Cup team around for YEARS to come. And Howard will keep improving. The next 5 years would be good w/ that roster and I think they'd win another Cup. And Holland and Waddell are buddies. It could happen.

If you want to trade for Kovalchuk it's got to be something like this... Zetterberg for Kovalchuk. Maybe an exchange of picks as well. Kronwall, Ericsson, Flip, Picks, Helm or something, and I don't even think that would be enough to cover the cap #'s. Your best bet is to wait for UFA if he hits it or trade Zetterberg (which I would totally consider). MAYBE they'd take Franzen, Krownwall, Ericsson, picks, but then you are kind of overpaying because of the lose on the back end, IMO.

I bet anything that once he hits UFA if he does, that he will be getting a deal like Zetterberg, AO, etc. Hell I'd ask the max from Atlanta too.
