Are you actually WATCHING the game? "Defending himself" had nothing to do with the high stick call. Backus got hit with the blade of the stick (while both he and Bert were falling), NOT the shaft of the stick. It was the right call.

Well, one of the used to be with the Avs broadcast team...so draw your own conclusions.

Nothing about that in the rulebook. If it was followthrough by Bert (pass, shot, dump-in), then it wouldn't be a highsticking call. There are calls ALL THE TIME in cases where a collision occurs, players go down, and a stick comes up. Contrary to popular belief, the refs aren't out to get us in THIS game.
