I like it - the same notion has occurred to me on several occasions when the validity of a goal was disputed & in any situation that could otherwise be verified by this relativley simple idea. The biggest problems would have to be calibration of the system and the fact that the puck would have to be a passive device - obviously any elctronics would create an un-balanced device & obviously never be able to survive the abuse a puck sees. Still, it seems like it should be a pretty simple thing to accomplish. Now that you mention it, I have also had the same thoughts regarding football - especially since they have that whole "breaking the plane of the goal line" deal which seems to be a constant source of debate during just about every other rushing touchdown these days...

I completely agree that booing #91 is obnoxious and un-called for under any circumstances. I can understand those who were/are upset when he left, I was one of them (briefly). However, the time has come (and gone) to get over it and remember the good times. He is still an awesomely talented player who deserves our gratitude, no doubt about it. You can complain about his attitude or perceived notions of his loyalty (or lack thereof) all you want, but actions speak louder than words and I think that is reason enough to show him the respect he deserves whenever he is back at the Joe. Ask yourself this: If we can take Hasek back, then why not Sergei? If we could trade Lang, Sammy, etc straight up for him right this minute, I would do it in a heartbeat. I'm telling you right now, the moment he puts that winged wheel sweater back over his heart the mojo would return and he would be back to his old (slight pun intended) self in no time.

Here's yet another article summarizing the career of our hallowed Captain. I thought maybe this would be a good time to pause & reflect on the example he has left with us before the Wings take to the playoff ice for the first time without him after so many years of his indomintable presence. Although we face this awesome challenge with perhaps a bit more trepidation than we have for the past several years, I have faith that the spirit of determination taught to the younger generation of players by Stevie will prove to be a lesson well learned. Win or lose I'm certain that they will make us proud, and when it's finished we will still have our captains (Yzerman & Lidstrom) to thank for it. NHL.com link One more happy thought of the day: It's still possible that Stevie gets his name on the cup again someday if the Wings win it when he is GM...

Gordie Howe Autograph Signing This Weekend
Bender replied to Behind Enemy Lines in CO's topic in General
Well, generally the best thing to do is to show up early, find out who is running the show & make sure that you get direct answers to all your questions ahead of time. As for specifics, I think that really depends on the circumstances. -
Hull is just sore becasue the NHL & Detroit gave Stevie the retirement ceromony of the decade and nobody outside of St. Louis even payed much attention to his...

That last quote is what worries me - when it comes right down to the political BS surrounding the people involved with the situation, I fear that Toledo may lose pro hockey (again) for an indefintie amount of time. Bastards.

Could it possibly be their home ice advantage? I swear, everytime we go in there with that army they call fans backing them up, I shudder to think about what they would be like in the playoffs. I'm going with the majority here - I would much rather see the Wings in fourth place and take our chances with Dallas / San Jose / Minnesota.

With the exception of Legace after losing that last playoff game last year, I don't think I have ever hated a Red Wing player. -That being said, I find Kronwall's play especially infuriating lately. Yeah, I know, he has potential / still being developed / etc...etc... but there is just something about the decisions he makes on the ice that stikes me as being very wrong. -Also, I think it's time for Sammy to move on and let one of the euro-kids step up into the full-time lineup. -Lang doesn't really bother me. I guess I'm just convinced that he could do so much better if only he wasn't so lazy most of the time.

That seemed harsh, but not far off the mark IMHO.

pwnt No matter, let the greasers have their fun - maybe Nashville will get caught looking past them and get whipped in the process.

Confirmed? Last I heard, it was still up in the air....

It was only a matter of time before somebody brought up the Goaldiggers. Come to think of it, that's really where my interest in hockey began. After they folded, I practically forgot about hockey during the interim until the Storm started to play, which renewed my fascination with the game and I have been getting more & more into it ever since. I can remember pucks literally slamming into empty seats next to me at their games when I was like 5 years old. That was practically a near death experience - I can still recall that moment with clarity. Another time, I saw a player get cross-checked into the end boards and knocked hard to the ice - which was fine - until one of the 'diggers failed to stop in time and ended up (unintentionally) cutting into the guy's face with his skate. They took him off on a stretcher and it took several minutes to clean all the blood of the ice. Needless to say, that left quite an impression...

Did anybody hear the VS commentators talking about Chelios after the game last night? They got into a discusion regarding the fact that he has now played the most games of any american player and they ended up agreeing that Chelios was in fact the best american born player in NHL history. I was a bit surprised at first, but when you stop to think about it he really is one of the best all time among the US ranks. I usually don't mention it, but Chelios has been my second favorite player in the league ever since he came to Motown. Now that #19 is hanging in the rafters, I guess that makes Cheli #1 in my book. Not to start an argument, but Chelios has always been a prime example of just exactly what I used to think of as a great hockey player - whereas Stevie redefined it and took it to the next level - for me at least. Certainly, Chelios is destined for the HoF. In the meantime, he is still out there schooling these young whipper-snappers about what it means to be hockey player.
