He said he was going to leave that record to Gordie.

Not really big on Phaneuf being captain, but who are their alternatives?
-
He looks like a professor I had in college.

There was also a 5th round pick in the deal, and we still have Tollesfsen's rights, if he decides to come back.

Indecision in NHL Participation in Russian Olympics Pushes Some Russia
CenterIce posted a topic in General
Note: I guess my title was too long. This is just a post from ESPN.com Insider that suggests Russian players may bolt for the KHL, if they want to guarantee playing in the Olympics in 2014. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman might try to stop NHL players from participating in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. And that might be a big factor in pushing Ilya Kovalchuk to the KHL. Kovy's agent, Yury Nikolaev, told Sport-Express (as per RT.com) that the rumored three-year, $42 million deal is not true and "clearly overstated," but he said the three-year term is accurate. So why three year? Nikolaev said, "Ilya has a desire to play in Russia until the Sochi Olympics [in 2014]." The KHL team most interested in Kovy's services is SKA St. Petersburg, whose president, Alexander Medvedev, is also the KHL president. The deal rumored to be on the table is three years at around $10 million a year. Another KHL club, Salavat Yulaev, might also be interested. In the NHL, he'll probably get offers of no more than $9 million a year -- probably closer to $8 million -- but for a longer term. From ESPN.com Insider -
Not if they brought over any sensitive documents.

Would a real gritty fighter help or hurt this team?
CenterIce replied to babygorilla's topic in General
I did not say that the Wings' should not have a fighter on the team. I said if they do, they need one who can contribute in other areas, not just the fists. You do remember that there used to be 24 roster spots; now only 23. There used to be no salary cap; now there is one. You can't have a guy sitting on your roster, waiting for certain games, where there may be a fight. And, the guys you were talking about? I assume you mean Joey Kocur, who had key goals in the 97 finals versus Philadelphia. McCarty had the hat trick against Colorado in the Conference Finals in 02. Dallas Drake also contributed points in 08 playoffs. I think you are just proving my point. I like fighting. Never said any differently. I just said they have to contribute, especially in this era. The guys you are inferring did just that. Well said. -
Because without Holmstrom and Lidstrom, our power play would be nonexistent, and the power play scoring is a big percentage of Wings' scoring over the years.

And, his ease of turning the puck over to the other team at the most inopportune times.

You can't have a player who just sits on the bench for all but 5 minutes of a game anymore. Everyone has to contribute. If a guy can fight, but chip in some goals and assists, every now and than, bring him on, but if all he does is fight, there is no room on the roster. You wouldn't want him to be in every game, because he wouldn't always be needed. And, you can't always predict exactly which games he would be needed. -
He was a radio and TV announcer, though.

Looks like he wants to raid the executives. In addition to getting Ryan Martin, Steve Yzerman would like to hire Detroit pro scout Pat Verbeek for the Tampa Bay Lightning. about 3 hours ago via web http://twitter.com/kausatoday

Leino came out and said in an NHL article that he basically did not like it in Detroit. He didn't want to be over coached, with everyone telling him what to do. He also said the Wings were trying to make him a goal scorer, when he feels he is a play maker. He didn't want to play system hockey. So, his attitude was not in a place to play for the Wings. With the Wings, you have to buy into the system. You have to be responsible in both ends of the ice. Plus, you have to be willing to be flexible and play different roles. Some guys play well on some teams and not on others.

I would love Sutton (MTU connection), but he gets injured a lot. Most contracts outside of Detroit are like that, because a lot of teams have to over pay to get players to come there. It is just adding up to the same circumstances that brought the cap into play. Players getting over paid their worth, and then, other players using those contracts to justify why they deserve more.

Interesting that Verbeek has jumped but Martin has not. My guess would be that Verbeek would be a top scout, maybe even the head scout. Martin would get a huge job bump, but maybe he doesn't want the added responsibility. Usually, assistant GM's handle the farm team and some scouting. They are under contract, but yes, the Wings have allowed Yzerman to talk with them.

Yzerman asks Wings for permission to speak with capologist Martin

Maybe the guy thought no one in the world cared if he was around any more. This story showed that two guys did care. It can change someone's outlook.
