Report: 2009-10 cap rumored to be $55M

Everyone has to also keep in mind that the players have until April to exercise their out option of the current CBA, which could mean renegotiating over the summer.

    Why are we worrying?

The reason people are worried right now is because the Wings can normally win any kind of game, whether it be a offensive versus defensive battle or a hard hitting versus skilled game. The problem is they are relying on one facet of their game to get them through, the power play. What happens if the power play has a drought, or they don't get a lot of calls in a game? To win the Stanley Cup, you need to be able to play in all types of games. Also, every point is important. You have to be able to get as many points as you can, now. It gives you the advantage later in the season of being able to rest players and not having to scramble late in the year.

11/14 GDT: Red Wings 3, Florida Panthers 2

This is how the Wings played during the run to the 07 cup. They won a lot of games, but they spent too much time in their own zone, turning it over. They fixed it last year, but now they are back doing it, again. Maybe they should just watch some game film from last year's playoffs.

Also, the NJ game where they won 3-1.

    Interesting Statistics

Don't worry ESPN did the work for you. Goal scoring is up from last season. Through Tuesday night's games, the NHL was averaging 5.9 goals per game, up from 5.6 over the same 220 games last season. That's a 66-goal difference (if the trend lasts all season, it will be a 369-goal difference). The number is also way up from the 5.0 goals per game the league was averaging through 220 games in 2003-04, the season before the lockout and all the rule changes. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/stor...&id=3700240

    Kronwall and Stuart

What it looks like to me is the refs were more concerned about the net moving and missed the kick, because they gave the goal to the guy who took the initial shot. The puck had not fully crossed the line before Prospal kicked it, so it was kicked in. It all maters on who last touched the puck before it goes in. Some could argue on the definition of distinct kicking motion. His foot never left the ice, but it change direction from going foward to going sideways right at the puck. However, I don't even think they were looking at that, because of who they gave the goal to. It probably wouldn't surprise me if the NHL has some rule that if something else is discovered in replay, other than what you were looking for, it can not be used.

What is the rules on Crease viloations?

Nicely done. Sounds a little too true, though.

Whoops, I meant 90's. I guess I flashed back a little too far.

    Lidstrom calls himself out

Well, someone on here had a post of who can wake the team up. Nick might have just done that. He is usually stellar, and if he feels he needs to work that much harder, hopefully, it will rub off on the rest of the guys.

What is the rules on Crease viloations?

That rule was tossed out in the late eighties. Basically, it now says that you are not to prevent a goalie from making a play on the puck. So, you can't keep him from skating out to the top of the crease or from moving side to side.

    Who/What will wake us up?

It has to be the coaching staff. They need to work on 5 man units in practice and practice being penned in your own zone.

    Brad McCrimmon

McLellen was the forwards coach. McLean coached the defense. When McLellan left, McLean moved over to the forwards, and McCrimmon came in for the defense. So, both sides have to get used to a new style, and the two coaches need to work together to get the players on the same page.

where, oh where has our defense gone?

The problem is the team defense. They are not working as a team to get the puck out of the zone and getting a scoring chance on the other end. It really showed in third against Pittsburgh. Shots on goal were 26-14 in favor of the Wings, through two periods. During the third period and overtime, shots on goal were 20-8, in favor of Pittsburgh. Looking at the NHL stats, the Wings goals against by period is 10, 16, 18, 3. They are coasting through the ends of games, where they need to play all 60 minutes. There power play is first, but their penalty kill is 16. Bowman always wanted the sum of those numbers to be under 10. Per game, they are first in goals for and 23 in goals against, resulting in a per game goal differential of 0.28. They have only had 4 games where the result was not by one goal. Two were empty net wins, and they have one - two goal win and one - two goal loss.

When is the bashing of players going to end?

It doesn't end until the Wings win the Cup, and it begins right after ward.

I've got one major problem with Babcock

I didn't see where and when Kopecky was on the ice late in the third, but I assume it was probably with Draper to provide an extra center for a draw and to body some people on the ice. Babcocks stratergy the whole time he has been here is to use about 3.5 lines. He throw out the top two at the expense of the fourth's ice time. The third line is out for defense and give the top two some rest.

I've got one major problem with Babcock

Hudler plays better on the 3rd and 4th lines, with limited minutes, then he does on the top two lines. On the lower lines, he is playing against weaker opposition. Also, the lower minutes keeps him fresher for the power play. He seems to get bullied around playing on the top lines, to where he is worn down the rest of the game. He wasn't out late because he is not known for his defense.
  20. It is a team defensive decline. When the forwards don't back check well or they spread out too far from the defense, pressure is put on the defense. When they get pressured, they start to lose position and start to over commit. That puts pressure on the goalie. The game was lost in the third period, when they sat on some leads and got trapped in their own end. It got so bad that you saw Datsyuk having uncharacteristic bad plays, leading to goals. Speaking about Ralfalski individually, I do not regret that they got him. He was very important in the playoffs, allowing Lidstrom to concentrate on defense against the other teams top players. We knew going in that he is an offensive defenseman. He is not going to go into a game and shut down the other team.
