Interesting. Everything I had seen said they could walk, but someone posted an NHL.com article saying they couldn't since the team brought it. This makes it look like they can walk. Don't think they will, especially now they are cap compliant.
-
There saying Weber got 7.5m from arbitration. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Not much else to happen this year. From an NHL.com article someone posted earlier, Nashville has to accept this, since they initiated the case. I think this barely gets them to the floor, and they would still have a couple of roster spots available.

A couple other things in the article but it does clear a few things up I think.
Interesting note, because one of the about.com links I posted distinguished between the two types of arbitration and then stated teams could walk away, implying that they could on either type.
Arbitration is based on comparisons to other players in the league at the same level and what they are making, as well as things like age, etc. The highest paid defenseman is Campbell at just over $7m. Lidstrom, Chara, and Boyle are all top-end defensemen in the $6m-$7m range. Weber is the youngest here, and with the most future. However, it will also be a short contract, leading to a higher future salary and potential loss on the UFA market. Meaning that Weber has variables working both for him and against him in a market with constantly rising salaries. His cap hit will likely be somewhere around $7m to $7.5m.
Evidence that is not admissible:
The salary and performance of a "comparable" player who signed a contract as an unrestricted free agent.
Testimonials, video and media reports.
The financial state of the team.
The salary cap and the state of the team's payroll.

Another interesting note is that the Predators currently have a little over 23 million to spend with 3 rosters spots open. They are not even at the floor, yet.

You can accept it and then trade the player, but you cannot trade their rights. As far as I understand it.
Yeah... but he is 27 next year.
But, when the league year starts, he will be 26, with only 6 years in. It works both ways. Some guys have turned 35 the year they signed a contract, but since they were 34 when the season started, they didn't have a 35+ contract.
I think this is the first time you and I have agreed, but this is completely true. An arbitrator will award almost certainly less than what Weber and Co. are pushing for. If Weber's camp is pushing for $8.5, its doubtful the judge rules for anything higher than $8....which Weber is certainly worth . Anything less and NSH makes out like a bandit because they get 2 more years of his services worry-free before renegotiating long-term.
NSH's POV right now is why waste money the next 2 years when the judge will almost certainly save them some.
Arbitration is 1 year contracts only, and teams can only request arbitration once on a player. His contract will come up again next summer, but he will still be a RFA.

I guess Capgeek says because he is 27 in August and they go by your age on June 30th (which is the first time I have heard this before) You get stuck another year?!?!
What kinda bs is that? I sure would be mad if I were him.
The age rule has been there all the time. It even affects 35+ contracts. Your age is recorded as your age at the beginning of the league year, which is July 1st. Also, free agency is currently 27 years old OR 7 accured seasons. Sounds like he isn't qualified for either.

And since he is RFA, if the team likes what the arbitrator rules - he will be forced to re-sign?
Basically, yes.
-
If an arbitrator rules in favor of Weber, let's say, at a price that Nashville doesn't see fit - would they likely trade his rights? I'm not terribly familiar with matters of arbitration and the like. Does the arbitrator basically rule on a monetary number for yearly salary and leave the contract negotiations up to the player and team from there?
Whatever the arbitrator rules in the end, if the club decides not to go with it, Weber becomes UFA. Basically, the team walks away.

I thought he ended as a thrasher?
Nope, resigned with St. Louis for a little while after. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=5414

Speaking of Kronwall, somebody needs to show him this list.
Perhaps a little motivation for him.
The rotation was started because Babcock felt that Datsyuk was deserving of an A, and they wanted to reflect that. I don't think we will see a rotation now with Draper retired.

Old news
Was posted 3 days ago in different thread
I thought about checking that thread, but thought Strader deserved his own, since he is a former Wings' broadcaster.

GLENDALE --As I’ve recently completed working my 25th season of TV play-by-play in the National Hockey League, I have some news. I have accepted a multi-year offer from NBC Sports Group to be a full-time play-by-play announcer for their NHL package that begins a 10-year run this fall. While there are many factors, both personal and professional, that went into my final decision, it’s not going to be easy to say goodbye to all the wonderful people I’ve worked with in Phoenix over the past four seasons.[/Quote]

And I can stop anytime I want.
But why would you.

The Detroit Red Wings aren't expected to spend much more this offseason, not that they've committed much to the future at all. And there's good reason for that. The Detroit News' Ted Kulfman writes, "Next season's potential unrestricted free agent group is so good. Absolutely loaded, actually. While this free-agent class one had a bunch of depth players, next year's is filled with difference makers worth spending the extra millions."
The Wings could make a really big splash next offseason because they have no free agents they'll have to pay huge salaries, except maybe Nicklas Lidstrom -- if he decides to come back. If he doesn't, though, there are several elite free agents they could pay with that money, including Zach Parise, Brent Burns, Patrick Sharp and -- perhaps most intriguingly -- Shea Weber. Losing both Brian Rafalski this season and potentially Lidstrom next season could make them an ideal destination for the 2010-11 Norris Trophy finalist.
I read that myself, but the writer doesn't think Stuart or Kronwall will command money as free agents?

He is not leaving ESPN in any way. He is moving from CBC to TSN in Canada.
-
He lives just outside of Windsor. He would be with his family. He would live at home.
What about the road trips? It sounds like he wanted to see his kids more. Not going to be able to see them, while you are on the road.

As a current Michigan Tech student and long time Michigan Tech hockey fan (it's been tough, I know), this news made my day. He was unbelievable to watch in college and it'll really make me happy to hopefully see him get pulled up at one point and throw on that Wings jersey.
First thing I thought of was: Let's go Tech!
-
My vote goes to Bob Boughner.
Only thing about him is that he left Columbus to be closer to his family. Yeah Detroit is closer to Windsor than Columbus, but my guess would be that he will not be coaching in the NHL next year. Columbus or Detroit you are still on the road a lot.

Guy is a former goaltender, which leads me to believe he would coach the defense. WMU defensive numbers so/so last year. Even though that is still mostly on players, and it was this guy's first season behind the bench.
-
Why isn't Kenny making a push for guys like these? I mean im not against what he is doing but i think it would be awesome to see another talent come in via trade, and perhaps we will see one. :S
It looked like they wanted a trade with comparable salaries. Only guys that would fit with on the Wings would be Datysuk, Zetterberg, or Lidstrom. Otherwise, it would have to be made up with a bunch of other guys. Wouldn't work too well either way.
-
Wow, what a shocker. Very even trade though IMO.
How long before Heatley demands a trade?
Heatley has a NMC, so I am assuming he had to have approved it.
-
Kindl and Smith are going to be the odd-men out on this one, unless there's a trade in the works.
Lidstrom-White
Kronwall-Stuart
Ericsson-Commodore
Sounds about right.
-
I see Commodore on the second pairing midway through the season with Stuart.
Lidstrom-Kronwall
Stuart-Commodore
Ericsson-Kindl/other
I know some will say that E is the number 4 dman right now and I believe he will most likely start the season that way, but I think that Commodore will eventually show himself to be more dependable and force E to take the job from him.
Your have all the offense in the top pair. Plus, I am not sure the Wings are done signing defensemen, yet.
-
Chicago did this recently too I believe.
That is one of the reasons Tallon is the Florida GM now, instead of still being in Chicago.

He has been my #1 choice as a defenseman since day one but I figured he was an RFA so Holland would not go after him. Now with all of these defensemen getting signed and rights getting traded, why not look into it? I'm sure Phoenix will probably give him a bloated contract to help reach the floor but atleast we should make a phone call or something. We haven't heard anything about him. Phoenix is hurting financially and Yandle should know its only a matter of time before they move somewhere else.
Phoenix just qualified him, so he is still a restricted free agent. He will probably be a top priority, so I don't think he will get away from Phoenix.
Weber Arbitration hearing...

As far as I know, they could only take him to arbitration once.
