Russian League poised to offer Malkin $12.5 mill/yr
NeverForgetMac25 replied to sixer's topic in General
I know he was fazed as the playoffs wore on (mainly because the Wings were able to shut him down), but I can't believe I didn't hear this quote. Anyone have a link? -
Are you referring to Gerber or Dom?
-
That's a different story. I wouldn't touch him with a 10-foot pole for his current salary, but if the Wings could pick him up like they did Cleary, I'd absolutely give him a shot. HaroldSnepsts just said it best:

Not for his current salary, atleast.

Russian League poised to offer Malkin $12.5 mill/yr

*So all things equal* (especially given the economy problems/advantages of living in Russia vs. America) we're talking around $4-5 million extra per season to play in his home country versus playing in (whats considered at this point) the best league in the world. I don't necessarily fault him no matter what his decision is, but I sure would hate to see any form of a trend starting going the other way. That's my whole point. -
He's signed: Ellis Re-Signs with Nashville

Russian League poised to offer Malkin $12.5 mill/yr

Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm not too up to date on Russia's income tax policy, but in the article they stated that his salary would be tax free. I'm not even going to bother comparing Russia's economy to that of America's as this isn't the correct forum for that. -
Just kidding!

Russian League poised to offer Malkin $12.5 mill/yr

I'm not questioning his motives, rather just answering your question. It's not $2-3 million per year more. Keep in mind if Malkin makes $9-10 million in the US, that will be taxed and he'll bring home somewhere in the ballpark of $6-7 million. In Russia, he'd be making double that. -

The scary thing about this is that if Malkin for some reason or another actually decided to go to Russia it could really change the way the NHL is perceived by Russians. While I don't see the league losing its Swedes, Finns, Czech's, etc., this could definitely be the start of Russians staying home (or going back) rather than coming to the NHL. -
I'm confused.....when the hell did they *ever* go away? Here's a recap of the past 6 years on LGW: Manny, Manny, Cujo, Cujo! Hasek, Hasek, Cujo, Cujo, Manny, Manny! Manny, Manny, Ozzie, Ozzie! Hasek, Hasek, Ozzie, Ozzie! Ozzie, Hasek, Hasek, Ozzie!

Players you would trade the Wings 1st round pick for.

Alright, Ham Sandwich on 12-Grain Wheat, with California Cheese (not Wisconsin, otherwise Boston would be making out like bandits). Panini is out of the question. What, do think Ilitch is made of money or something? -
TBH and realistic, I highly doubt that's their aspirations given that they've missed the playoffs since the salary cap was instituted. Realistically, I would think the Blues' aspirations are to get back in to the playoffs and they now have two goaltenders than can absolutely help them do that. Once they're there though, I agree that these two won't get the job done, but that's not necessarily what their honest expectations are for this upcoming season.

He's the very definition of a solid back-up, especially compared to what St. Louis was working with (and a solid amount of other teams). I never said he was great or struck fear into the opposition but he gets the job done for the role player he is. He had an off year this past season but before that he posted the following numbers: 2006/2007: 24-11-4 ---2.38 GAA --- 0.925 SV% 2005/2006: 12-5-1 ---2.54 GAA --- 0.913 SV% 2004/2005: 4-4-1 ---2.18 GAA --- 0.926 SV%

I don't necessarily feel Mason is dead-weight, but he just isn't "the guy". He was perfectly capable as Vokoun's backup, but faltered when thrust into the starting role. In St. Louis, he'll be a solid backup for Legace and this helps alleviate the abundance in that level of a goalie.

QFT It's an absolute overpayment at this point of his career, and they would have been better off just waiting until the offer sheets came in. Honestly, I don't think any GM (although some make ridiculously stupid moves in this cap era) would offer anywhere near $5 million. If they do, you've picks to compensate, and if they don't, you get him "for a bargain" so to speak.

Nice Turretin! I don't think you caught Turretin's sarcasm. Read the end of ARice's initial post.

Not for me. NHL players that haven't won it don't touch it, and neither will I.

Cam is a UFA after this coming season and will command $5.5-6.5 million per in a new contract. This puts Pittsburgh right back in the situation they have with Malkin. All they get out of it is what could end up being an extremely solid Dman but other than that, it'll end up being no different than the predicament they are going to be in come the Summer of '09, and with a player less effective than Malkin. This just doesn't make sense to me unless Shero knows something about Malkin that we all don't......and I'm not even talking about this theory that he "needs to be the number 1 guy".

What a phenomenal deal for LA if this is in fact legit.
