Well, tonight is the big night! Listed below are the awards up for grabs and their respective candidates (with Red Wing nominees being bolded): HART TROPHY (League MVP): Jarome Iginla, Calgary Flames Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals NORRIS TROPHY (Top Defenseman): Zdeno Chara, Boston Bruins Nicklas Lidstrom, Detroit Red Wings Dion Phaneuf, Calgary Flames VEZINA TROPHY (Top Goaltender): Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils Henrik Lundqvist, NY Rangers Evgeny Nabokov, San Jose Sharks CALDER TROPHY (Top Rookie): Nicklas Backstrom, Washington Capitals Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks SELKE TROPHY (Top Defensive Forward): Henrik Zetterberg, Detroit Red Wings Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings John Madden, New Jersey Devils LADY BYNG (Sportsmanship/Gentlemenly Play): Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings Jason Pominville, Buffalo Sabres Martin St. Louis, Tampa Bay Lightning MASTERTON TROPHY (Perseverance): Jason Blake, Toronto Maple Leafs Chris Chelios, Detroit Red Wings Fernando Pisani, Edmonton Oilers LESTER B. PEARSON (Best Player as voted by the NHLPA): Jarome Iginla, Calgary Flames Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals ADAMS AWARD (Best Coach): Mike Babcock, Detroit Red Wings Bruce Boudreau, Washington Capitals Guy Carbonneau, Montreal Canadiens Can't wait to watch this tonight! I can't imagine Dats or Z not winning the Selke and its unfathomable that Lids won't take home another Norris. It'll be interesting to see how the league views Dats in the Lady Byng category given the chip he's played with this season, and here's hoping the league views the changes Babs has made to the Wings as just as significant (if not moreso) than turning a struggling team around. Cheli with the Masterton, anyone?

Zetterberg is Lazy and he Sucks! -
Any thoughts on who will be the next assistant coach?
NeverForgetMac25 replied to Majsheppard's topic in General
No he won't. He wants to play next year, and when he said he wanted to be here no matter what his role is, he was referring to playing. -

Yeah, my bad. Mods, please make the correction. -
If you're referring to the finals, he scored the winner in Game 4. Early third period goal.

Zetterberg named TSN's Player of the Year
NeverForgetMac25 replied to datsyukismyfriend's topic in General
Really? I still think Lidstrom is the best player in the world. Don't get me wrong, with the regular season and playoffs that Z had, he definitely deserved this award....but if we're talking best player in the world right now, to me Lidstrom is a no-brainer. -

Crosby is the NHL's poster boy, not Z. In other words...it won't happen. -
Zetterberg named TSN's Player of the Year

TBH, I think that's *why* he won. Those players and personnel know what it is to be a complete player and while Ovie is an incredible talent, his all around game is nowhere near where Z's is at this point. On top of that, it's very simple to look at the numbers Ovie has put up and say, "Oh, he's gotta be the winner", but when you break down all the apsects of the game, Z is the clear choice this year. -

QFT Thats the greatest thing about having a player as talented as Z being as driven as he is. When you combined those two the results are beyond scary. Now you add Dats to the mix and not only do you have two of the most driven, skilled players out there but you've got both of them pushing each other to be even better. The sky is the limit at this point given their respective ages. -

The Wayne Gretzky Award - most goals by a team
NeverForgetMac25 replied to TheWestWing's topic in General
TBH, that was the first thing that came to my mind as well. After thinking about it though, I began to question what else it might be called? I would think the idea of calling it the WG trophy would simply be because he's the all-time leading goal scorer and that's the first thing that came to mind. -
He was targeted by many people well before his physical play started. Guys are always going to hit the skill guys to see if they can get them off their game a little. Now, Dats just hits back.....but I don't think he'll be targeted any more than he already was/is.

The Wayne Gretzky Award - most goals by a team

I can see his argument.....it makes sense. -
:rotflmao: Honestly, my day with the Cup would be so boring, because I wouldn't touch it. I hold the utmost respect for the Cup and since I'll never have the opportunity to earn it, I refuse to touch it out of respect.

I completely agree with you, but I just wanted to throw out there that the league isn't in trouble. Yes, they are trying to build their fan base, buts its not as if the NHL needs "saving" right now. The league revenues continue to grow each year. It's not about blowing it out of proportion. It's about neglect, that seems ever-prevalent in the sport we love.

Bingo As Opie pointed out, Carson Daly has nothing to do with hockey. I don't care if he misspeaks, because the people that watch Carson Daly don't even know what hockey is. This was the actual award show in which the league wishes to showcase its best and someone couldn't take a quick glance at the back of a kids jersey and realize the spelling was wrong. I don't think that's asking too much.
-
While, I'm not raising a major stink about it like SWF is implying some are, I do find it to be pathetic that (whether or not the league was in charge of making the jersey) that no one recognized the misspelling of the Norris trophy winner for 6 of the last 7 years. I understand mistakes happen, but it's called taking pride in what you do....something Lids has done for years.
-
Well, when you're wearing a fat-suit for a chest protector a sleeping-bag jersey is all that will fit.
-
I care because it makes the league look bush-league.

Shelly and I were watching that, and I immediately shook my head. C'mon people....is it really that difficult? :nonono:

TSN: Senators to name Craig Hartsburg as Coach
NeverForgetMac25 replied to sjradio's topic in General
He's dead-on with this comment. The Sens remind me a lot of the early 90's Wings where they didn't have the will or accountability to go the extra mile. If they can get that, they are a move or two away from being real contenders. -

I have to agree that The Onion has taken a nose dive. TBH, I didn't find this article to be all that funny. Opie, tell me if you remember some of these classics: (1) Vicki Helmholz/Dell Computer Point-Counterpoint (2) Any of them from the Herbert F. Kornfeld Accounts Receivable -
