Wings sign Howard to 2-year, $4.5M extension
NeverForgetMac25 replied to hockey23's topic in General
No he's not. Jimmy Howard: 47GP, 2.79 GAA, 0.908 SV% Steve Mason: 40GP, 2.97 GAA, 0.905 SV% Brian Elliot: 45GP, 3.26 GAA, 0.893 SV% Nikolai Khabibulin: 39GP, 3.33 GAA, 0.893 SV% Note: Both Martin Brodeur & Jaroslav Halak have lower SV%'s and Jimmy's tied with Kiprusoff Is this something Howard should be impressed with: absolutely not, but the fact is he's not last as you stated. ....And now you're just putting words in my mouth. Never once did I claim stats lie. I said "I'm willing to give some leeway...not alot, but some." How does that translate to me claiming stats lie? On top of that, there are 4-5 regular starters that have lower numbers in one or both of the categories you mentioned. Bottom line, all I said was that he wasn't last in the league in those respective categories. If you're gonna get bent out of shape on someone calling you out for making a false statement, than don't make one in the first place. -

Wings sign Howard to 2-year, $4.5M extension

Then I wouldn't have refuted your original post. The point is, people will read something like that and take it as fact...which we both know it isn't. Again, those numbers aren't great by any means but with how s***ty our team defense has been I'm willing give some leeway on those categories this season. Not a ton, but some...and that's why he got $2.25 million instead of $2.75 or $1.75. -

While our defense has left a lot to be desired, they've always seemed to ramp things up down the stretch and with the depth up front, this team has a great chance of going deep. If the Wings make it to the Conference or Stanley Cup Finals, Jimmy's cap-hit likely goes up. That's why Kenny didn't wait. -

Where do you come up with this? I'll agree he hasn't been as stellar in those categories, but he's certainly not last in the league (even amongst starters). -

It's actually a fair deal for both sides. At $2.75 (the early rumor) Howard would've won. $2 million or lower, it would've been Holland's win. -

Just an FYI: I verified Ozzie potential LTIR salary remaining and its only $312,276. So, they could not at add $500k if they acquire a goalie and keep Ozzie on LTIR or move him. Needless to say, $312,276 is the amount they could add. -

I gotta think rwf19 is referring to the fact that Ozzie is left on LTIR or moved. Then we could replace another $500k (I haven't verified the number but I'll believe the poster) since he'd be off the active roster for the remainder of the season retroactive to when he went down. -
Three weeks ago I was climbing towards the top of the standings like nobody's business, but as I said....that was three weeks ago! I sure have s*** the bed since.

Yeah, this is definitely a tough situation because of course you're going to sign a bloated contract if its put forth in front of you. That being said, I'm not necessarily sure I feel bad for these players simply because they're still making their money. Is the situation less than ideal: of course it is. Is it just as much their fault that they aren't able to live up to the contract they signed: Likely. Great Read. Thanks for posting!

Getz...Given his physical play, size and scoring-touch he'd be an enormous addition to this Red Wings club.

One of the most bizarre hockey stories in its history is starting a new chapter. Apparently Danton is ready to return to the ice and play for St. Mary's University once the courts settle his terms of parole. It'll be very interesting to see if he'll be able to make it back to the NHL given how long he's been away from the game and that he's 29 already. Click to read full article: Danton Cleared To Return

If he calls it quits, the Wings are on the hook for his cap hit next year. Just sayin....

Says who? Who says a player is only paid for one type of scoring? Z was given that contract while playing alongside Dats for the majority of his career. At that time, Dats was the set-up man and Z was the goal-scorer. Dats was given his new contract, and was told to shoot the puck and now he's become more dangerous in that regard. Z was given his new contract, was split-up from Dats and is know playing on a line of more-or-less s***ty passers who both excel at burying the puck. Is it really any surprise that his goal-scoring is down while Bert's is flourishing? Put Z on a line with someone that can actually distribute the puck and his goals will follow. Until then, Z is doing what needs to be done to make his line successful....and he's doing a hell-of-a job, at that. Bottom line is he's paid to score, and that's what he's doing.

As long as McCreary's reffing, it'll be solidly-officiated. The NHL is truly going to miss his services next year.

So basically you're a proponent of minimizing risk rather than maximizing reward. TBH, the way our season has gone defensively I tend to agree given our offense (now that's its healthy) has continued to put the puck in the net at one of the highest paces in the NHL. Right now, this is the way to go because our defense has been so poor and obviously if they continue to move away from the Lids-Raf 1st pairing and Stuart-Kronwall second pairing, then Babs and Co. are fine with giving up offensive production from the back-end. It's not to say the production can't/won't come from the current pairings, but it likely won't come at the pace it could be with the former top pairings. At the same time, its also not a priority right now given how poor the defense has been all season and equally so due to how strong the offense has been.
