You gotta think this is what the Wings brass had in mind last year back in February when they let the league know that Val was untouchable. The confidence that this kid is playing with will be huge for the rest of his career. His ice-time should only go up which will continue to balance the Wings' offensive attack. Ponder this: If Val is doing this well right now imagine what will happen if the Wings bring in a 2nd-liner to play alongside him at the deadline. Scary for other teams!

QFT Seriously, the reason people b*tch about Lilja so mch is because the Wings have Lidstrom. It's easy to point out mistakes of other d-men when you've got one that never makes any. Lidstrom is the best in the game and is compensated for it. Lilja is a solid 4-6 d-man and is compensated *fairly* for it. The point is if Lids wasn't on the Wings I don't think Lilja's mistakes would be so noticed. When Lids retires there's going to be a harsh awakening for Wings fans, when you see a solid balanced D rather than a great D with the best defenseman in the game. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Lilja is worth every dime of his contract. So many people here like to whine about some of his mistakes, but you never hear those people talking about how many blocked shots he has per game (especially on the PP). How convenient.

Melrose definitely struggles when it comes to praising the Wings but he just takes longer than most. In '97 he waiited until the Wings lead PHI 2 games to none before saying the Wings were going to win it all. That being said, I don't have the mindset that what one analyst says about the team will determine any certain outcome. Let's just hope our boys continue this type of play.
