3-2 isn't exactly stellar numbers for any goalie worth his salt. Comparing him to Nabokov's doesn't strengthen the argument either, rather it just lumps him in with another playoff underachiever. The 06/07 playoffs were his only decent run. Any *solid* playoff goalie raises their level of play and their numbers somewhat significantly come postseason. Marty doesn't fall into that category.

Turco probably thought he had a better chance of not only playing for a contender but making more money as well. On top of Philly, other doors have closed since their offer and he probably made a "panic" decision. Chicago isn't going to be garbage, but they'll very likely be worse than Philly. He's probably kicking himself for not signing when he had the chance.

Cleary he lets his agent handle the contract negotiations, because if he thinks he'll only get around $800k if Modo signs he's not familiar with the CBA at all...which I find hard to believe (atleast in regards to RFA salaries). According to the CBA, the minimum salary he can get next year is $892,500 which was the required amount Kenny's qualifying offer had to be. Based on the minimum RFA salary increase rule and given his salary last year, he's required to get a minimum 5% raise ($42,500) which would bring his salary to no less than the aforementioned amount.

The thing I love about Dats is how fired up he gets when his teammates make a sick play. Number 1 obviously comes to mind but number 8 is the same type of thing. Typically if a player only has to tap the puck in, someone or multiple players on the other team made a mistake or got burnt. Dats (more so then others) seems to get jacked up when his teammates create a "layup."

Pronger's deal is a 35+ contract. The Flyers brass F'ed up and his cap hit will count against Philly until the expiration of his contract (unless they play the whole "injury-related" retirement scheme). As for DiPietro, his contract is 100% balanced from beginning to end, so neither his nor Pronger's are valid examples. Also, the tail-end of Franzen's contract really isn't that unreasonable. It's alot better than Zetterberg's, which is also way better than Hossa's and now Kovalchuk's.

On top of that, another way you could curb deals like this would be to reduce the maximum drop percentage. Allowing player contracts to only drop say 10% from the previous season's salary would have a profound effect on these types of deals as well. My favorite Homer moment was last season when they interviewed him right after the period ended and he had just been whistled off on a BS call. He was beyond pissed and it made the interview hysterical. First, they asked him about the penalty and (quite upset and with a death stare on the interviewer) he responded, "well it was garbage call, lets leave it at that." Then he went on to talk about Homer's net play and how it frustrates opposing goaltenders and Dmen. The interviewer asked, "once they become annoyed and start hacking at you only to take a subsequent penalty, have you then gotten in their head?" Homer's reply: "I'm in your head!"
