That trade is certainly even on paper, but who knows if the Hawks want to take on a big contract again. The whole "big name free agent" thing didn't really pan out for them, and I don't know if they'll want to take on Lang's hefty contract without dumping some of their own deadweights. Though Hudler would certainly give Chicago the element of skill that they're kinda lacking in their lineup. I like some of the names you guys are mentioning, and I'm suprised Carney's name hasn't come up before; he's a stud. I think Salei's been brought up before, and Ruslan could bring a real nastiness to the blueline. That's what Holland was trying to get when he signed Hatcher. But I don't know that there's any reason to be debating about acquiring a defenceman who could have a positive impact on this team. Gutsy moves made to help adhere to a team's weakness "don't happen in Detroit" apparently.

I don't believe we're talking about the same Brendan Witt. The guy is a textbook physical, defensive defenceman. At least that's what I've seen out of him. I've always taken a liking to his style of play, and have pushed for the Wing to get him even before Kronwall and Fischer went down. If you want to pan him for anything, I'd start with his offensive game. He's no more offensively gifted than Lilja, and there's no way he could replace the prospective puck-moving and offensive talent that Fischer had. And, just so we can set this straight, Mowers and Rivers have absolutely, positively no trade value.

As I stated before Eva, Jim Nill disagrees with you: Kopecky 'a lot stronger' and 'a lot more physical' this season ... Injuries or not, Kopecky is almost 24 and still isn't a point-per-game player at the AHL level. I'm not saying he's definitely a fourth line player, however, he certainly isn't a scoring line player either. And as for Kindl, you basically described perfectly why he is a risky pick. He had been noted as a possible top five pick in his draft year while he was in the Czech Republic. But the guy was 69th in defensive scoring in the OHL. He had showed definite potential but it was uncertain whether he could apply his skills to the NA game given his performance last season. Is that not what you would call a risk? I'm not saying it was a bad pick, Kindl has shown excellent progress this year and I think it was smart of the Wings to pick him up, but at the time, many analysts and scouts were a little unsure of whether he'd develop or not.

I believe Bootland's high PIM totals might be holding him back. Granted many of those are fighting majors, but I hear he is prone to being a little undisciplined at times. He definitely deserves a shot at the fourth line next year, though, and should be given a fighting chance in TC. I was wondering if anyone knew whether Booter had made any progress with his skating this season? I know he's not exactly slow, but it is regarded as a weakness of his. Anyways, I feel Grigs is as close as any of our prospects to being a lock for next season. He should've been here years ago (we all know what happened), and I feel he's recovered enough to still make an impact on the Wings. Filppula and Hudler should also get some consideration to make the top two lines out of TC, as they're both starting to mature, and have played as well as we could've hoped for in the AHL. I guess people are still criticizing Jiri's defensive game, though, so he'll have to work on that. As I mentioned above, I think Bootland deserves a shot at the fourth line, with Matt Ellis getting some consideration if he has a strong camp. And though I dislike Kopecky, if he's willing to give a solid effort like he has this season in the AHL, he should probably get a shot as well.

I should be studying for a rather large Physics test I have on Monday. But I've chosen to watch hockey all day instead.

Just thought I'd update you guys on how Kindl did tonight: http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/g...p?game_id=11935 He grabbed two assists to receive the game's first star. I guess he's picking up where he left off before the WJHC. Jakub is likely to triple, or possibly quadruple, his point total from all of last season some time soon.

No need to start a goalie bashing thread. Ozzie's not having an amazing season, but he's shown definite flashes of starter material this year. Though I'm not a big fan of his, I think he has just as much of a chance of nabbing the starting job as Manny does (though Legace might have just a little bit of an edge). Anyways, I would certainly take Komisarek. He's big and tough (even bigger than Lilja), and has the makings of a defensive stud one day. However, I guess he's a bit of a slow learner. Though it'd be hard to replace with only 1.33 million, I'd like the Wings to try and fill the hole that Fischer's ailment left on the blueline. Komisarek isn't exactly my number one choice, but he'd be a whole lot better than nothing. Another option would be Souray. He's more expensive, but displays the physical play and offensive upside that Jiri gave us. Though Sheldon's not quite as good at carrying the puck up ice, and he's not been all that great this season. I wouldn't mind Modin at all. He works hard and put up pretty solid totals during the Bolts' Stanley Cup run. His shot could really be utilized by the play-making abilites of either Zetterberg or Datsyuk. Realistically, though, he's not what we need, and especially not at 2 million dollars a season. Though I doubt Holland would want him anyway, he's a Swede...

I voted "yes", assuming he feels up to it of course. Detroit shouldn't be telling Kronwall that he's not allowed to get the chance to represent his country. That is not appropriate treatment for a player who could have a very prosperous future with this club. And as NN alluded to, the Olympics are no more physical than the AHL, and they'd make for an excellent conditioning stint.

I thought I might add to my previous post after I did a little more reading. Here is a recent article on Kopecky over at Red Wings Central: Kopecky 'a lot stronger' and 'a lot more physical' this season ... But I guess Jim Nill "has paid very little attention to our prospects", right Eva?
-
Pardon my comments..but you have paid very little attention to our prospects. Kopecky has FAR more chance at being a scoring type player than a fourth liner. His skills have always been there, it's the effort and physical play that wasn't always there. And as we all know, the fourth line guys are the ones who need to be putting out the effort and physical play every night because they AREN'T the ones doing the scoring. Of course it's ideal that everyone is putting in effort and physical play, but if anyone is allowed to slide on physical play it would be the scorers. Kindl was NOT a risky pick. He was rated a top five pick overall in the draft going into 04-05. He had a disappointing season due in large part to culture shock and a lack of ice time, and that cause his stock to slip. The Wings felt they got a steal in getting him, and he proved them right. With the graduation of Andre Benoit to the AHL, Kindl got a huge increase in ice time and has become maybe the best defenseman in the OHL, and is outshining every other defenseman on the Rangers by a large margin, including two other first round picks (2004 #10 overall Boris Valabik and 2005 #22 overall Matt Lashoff) I agree Quincey should be a solid top-four defenseman. Kopecky is not a scorer. A guy who fails to even come close to putting up a point-per-game in his fourth year in the AHL has no place on our top two lines. He's not a checker, and he's not a scorer, what does that make him? I naturally assumed he'd be an energy line player if he could put forth the effort he has so far this season in GR. We clearly disagree on this subject, but last I checked, I'm entitled to my opinion. I understand the disagreement on Kopecky, Eva, you have some valid points. But to say Kindl is not a risky prospect doesn't make any sense. You're right, he has looked excellent this season, but when he was first drafted, I wasn't so sure. By all accounts, he has the natural ability to be a top pairing d-man, but hasn't put it together yet. He could be a stud, or a dud. That is the definition of a risky prospect. I'm not the only one who thinks this; at least Bob McKenzie agrees with me anyway: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/draft/feature.asp?fid=6645 I'm glad we agree on Quincey. I really like him. We're allowed to disagree Eva, but to say I don't pay attention to our prospects is downright stupid. I read any and every single article I can about our system, and I'm consistently checking CHL and AHL boxscores; I follow prospects as closely as I do the Wings themselves.

I am not a fan of Kopecky by any stretch of the imagination, but he was given one last chance with this organization, and he stepped up his game significantly. I'm not too happy about him only really putting an effort in this season, but isn't it better than him not playing well at all? I don't know that Tomas has the skills to be a scoring line player, so he'll have to develop into a checking role. He could easily make it on the fourth line one day. I know these are only the opinions of Red Wings' Central, but I'm glad to see them talking about certain prospects in such high regard, more specifically, Abdelkader, Kindl, and Quincey. I have been very pessimistic and somewhat critical about Justin Abdelkader, but it's nice to see him getting some praise. In my mind, Justin's still probably going to be a third/fourth line checker, but Matthew Wuest seems to have more faith in him, and though Wuest is just a fan like I am, it'd be kinda stupid of me to think I know more about Wings' prospects than he does. It's also nice to see Kindl in the top five, and I'm glad to see how highly regarded he is. Jakub was a risky first round pick, but has made significant improvement this season, and if given time, he could develop into a top four defenceman. Kyle Quincey is another interesting prospect, and IMO, is one of the most underrated in the entire system. He's not a future Norris-trophy winner, but, according to everything I've read, he's been absolutely solid in GR and has adapted nicely to the pro game. There was even a nice little article about him in The Hockey News mentioning how impressive he's been as a rookie d-man. Kyle's not the punishing defenceman oh so many of us here would like, but he's at least as physical as anyone on our blueline right now.

No way, long hair's where it's at foo'. Seriously, though, I don't carry the short hair thing all that well. And I hope you all notice the new avatar. This might help keep ARice/J-Swift confusions to a minimum.
-
Well, there was a time a couple months ago when me and ARice both had Zetterberg avatars (which he still has one), and both had relatively similar comments below them. So I felt the need to change it. I think we're the same age too, and we both love Hank. Eerie.... EDIT--- Yeah, I see ARice's post, he picked up on the avatar thing too, and I guess my Fisch one, and his Hank one look alike too. But, I might add, there's absolutely nothing wrong with me ressembling such a fine looking young man such as yourself, ARice.
-
We look suprisingly alike ARice89. But I think my hair's just a little longer. Short hair's for nerds anyway.
-
I think that's what it boils down too. We'd have to move more than just Lang if we wanted to fit Weight onto our roster, and why would we possibly want to add another scoring line center to our team anyway?
-
Jackman would help out our blueline a lot, but his shoulder injuries are likely to affect him for the rest of his career. And I get a little nervous about the notion of Detroit trading within the division. Especially when it's not just an exchange of a couple picks and prospects or a minor leaguer, but rather a capable first/second line centre like Robert Lang. Obviously the Blues aren't going to hurt us this year, but who knows what Lang could do for them in the future. He was absolutely great on an awful Caps team last year.
-
We've got a lot of pretty solid forward prospects, yes, but none of them are of the power-forward type. Though Grigs is reasonably close, he'll likely wind up being a sniper if he pans out. And seeing as we're never going to draft a power-forward either (for whatever reason that may be), why not nab Malone now? Yes we need D, too, but that can be addressed in a different trade, because right now, we have very little in the way of strength and size in our top two lines.
-
Starting a goalie in three games in four nights when he's fresh off the IR is kinda risky, and Ozzie has always been solid against the Stars. I don't question the decision to start Ozzie at all, however, I think he should've been pulled sooner than the sixth unanswered goal.
-
Well, if it makes you guys feel any better, at least Babcock has taken the loss pretty hard: Babcock puzzled at fall off in play At least we know he's not making excuses for last night's game. I hope Babs has ripped into 'em by now for their pathetic effort in the second half of the game.
-
Agreed. Ozzie hasn't played well when he hasn't played for several days or so, and with Babs going to ride Manny now, it's very likely Ozzie won't be sharp for his next start either. He'll have a tough time taking the starting spot from Manny, but he has half a season to do so.

next seasons free agent signing priority #1
J-Swift replied to paul woods fan club's topic in General
Lids and Norstrom is conceivable. But the idea of nabbing one of either Chara or Redden in addition to re-signing Nick would be very tough. Those two would command up near league maximum, I'm guessing somewhere between 6-8 million a season. And Lidstrom is having yet another Norris-calibre season, so he can command the exact same amount. Putting 15 million+ into two d-men is a little much. -
At least NN and a few others have sense and know that the team needs to learn how to play for 60 minutes and don't blame it just on Ozzy when our defense stands and watches the other team. This is what really ticks me off. I dare say one thing about Ozzie and all of a sudden I get a lecture about something I've heard all season. I know the D sucked tonight, I know the Wings choked, I know our PK was weak, and our PP squandered some oppurtunities; but 6 goals on 23 shots is not acceptable any way you look at it. The Wings sucked tonight, and Ozzie was not any better.
-
Let's just say it wasn't his strongest outing.

Do not look at any scoresheets/recaps of this game. It makes the pain go away easier. EDIT--- I'm sorry wingsgirl001, I tried to shield you from such a sad, sad loss.
