Stan and Scotty Bowman have virtually nothing to do with the Stanley Cup winning roster... Dave Tallon built it, and the mess that came with it. As far as the off season, it's not a stroke of brilliance it's the obvious move to get draft picks for players. There isn't an option A B C or D... there is only an option A... shed salary, get picks in return... any GM would be doing the same thing, the best one and the worst one would have to make the same decision. No one is arguing that Scotty Bowman isn't one of the greatest minds in hockey and that his son Stan probably inherited some of that knowledge... We're just saying you can't credit, nor fault them for the Cup or the mess... let's see where Chicago is in five years before we go crowning Stan the savior of Chi-Town.

With all due respect why would Modano have any emotional tie to Probert, other than basic human emotion. Lidstrom, Draper Homer?? Ken Holland, Osgood? Would want to win one for Probie before Modano would, Modano would probably like to win one for Modano!
-
We won't need to dump anyone based on cap space, it's going to come down to who earns the roster spots and possibly losing someone to waivers. If Holland decides he wants to keep everyone he will just park Abby in GR again, I know Abs probably wouldn't appreciate that but it is an option, and yes I know Babcock said he plans on Abby playing all year, that was before he planned on having Modano.
-
Or replace Janik with someone slightly tougher, more expensive and veteran.
-
I stand corrected, I forgot about that part.
-
Retired salaries do not count against the cap.
-
The first Robocop movie was, in part shot here in Detroit. At COBO hall actually, the OCP building was in fact COBO.
-
You give him 2mill the first year and .750 the second, Modano retires after the first year making 2 mill yet his cap hit was only 1.375, it's a win/win.
-
Two years allows a lower cap hit... Espically if he is going to retire after one year!
-
What stars are you speaking of sir???? Holland chose to trade Quincey vs Meech... sounds like he just made a rare mistake. It wasn't an issue of bringing in someone older to replace him.
-
Duck fan as one of the most unbiased on this site in regards to this trade, would you make it?
-
No you interpreted my statement that way. Getz is a great player and a top 15, 10 on his best day but...in my opinion he isn't even on the same level as Z or Dats for that matter. Z and Dats will never win Harts or Rockets, thats not the Wings system. It's not homerism, its called watching hockey and judging the player by more than just their stats column on NHL.com, maybe you do that and you have a different view thats fine, but based on those areas of the game that are subject to interpretation that form the basis of my opinion.
-
Hank has intangibles that Getz can never have. Zetterberg shuts down other teams forwards like no one else in the game, (besides Datsyuk)and still finds a way to score during the playoffs, I don't give a rats ass who has more goals in the regular season, it's the playoffs where I judge the Wings. Let the Ducks chase regular season stats. On your second comment, Nick Lidstrom is still a top five defenseman in the league at 40, and top five of all time, to suggest that Getz is on his best day a top fifteen, maybe a top ten forward in this league to suggest that he is better than any one player on our entire roster is just plain stupid. This is Independance Day not April Fools Day... if you weren't confused about the day, perhaps it's the site, you might find this one more to your liking: A better site for you...

Rafalski Considered "top six signings since the 2005-06 season"
Booster313 replied to cjm502's topic in General
Raf was a solid pickup... I think he's over paid by about a million or so dollars a year though... Doesn't sound like much but in a cap world it can make all the difference. -
OR you put him on team with other guys that hit and he backs off because he is not the only one that has to do it all on his own.
-
How was Teemu injured?
-
Normally I would agree... but this is a really light draft in terms of skill. You'd have to pick in the top 10 to guarantee a first line/first paring player, almost everyone in the draft has upside...but. The advantage that the Wings have are they allow players to develop their upsides and clean up their buts (no pun intended) before they ever have to play an NHL game. Dylan McIlrath provides enough physical upside and solid defensive skills that he is a worthy 21st (or higher) pick, not to say that there aren't a few others. I think if the Wings go defense, and he's available they will take him.
-
For the record McIlrath's nickname is "the freight train from Winnipeg".
-
I would be okay with it IF the price were right and IF he had to earn his ice-time like any other forward. So that means that if he is taking a spot from say Eaves or Miller or someone else it's because he outplayed them in camp/a number of games to get their.
-
Can I throw this one out there? How about Georges Laraque? sp?! I know he is being bought out by the Canadians he is in Haiti now... I am not sure the reason. He might be a cheap enforcer option that can chip in with some O from time to time. I have always thought he fits the Red Wings idea of an enforcer.
-
Guys... if it's a two-way deal there is really no harm. If we are deep and don't need him, well then he will hang out in GR, if we have injuries or if some of our younger players lose their heads, well then we'll have a tried and true Red Wing available to call up.
